ESCONDIDO (CNS) - An argument between two men at a northern San Diego County gym Tuesday turned into a baseball bat assault that sent one of them to a hospital, authorities said.A bystander made a 911 call shortly after 9 a.m. to report the fracas outside LA Fitness in the 300 block of West El Norte Parkway in Escondido, according to police.Witnesses told officers the dispute started as a quarrel inside the business, Sgt. Mike Graesser said.The bickering men eventually made their way outside the gym, at which point one of them went to his car, retrieved a bat and attacked the victim with it, hitting him on the head at least once, Graesser said. The attacker then got into the vehicle, a black sedan, and drove off.Medics took the victim to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.The assailant remained at large Tuesday afternoon, though police had "a pretty good idea who he is," according to Graesser, who noted that a witness videotaped the assault."We have some good leads," the sergeant said. 1056

(KGTV) - Residents of a small mobile home park across the street from the proposed Newland Sierra development, Measure B on the March ballot, say they fear a "yes" vote to approve the project could do irreparable damage to their community.Deer Springs Oaks is made up of 32 mobile homes off Deer Springs Road, directly across the street from the Newland Sierra site. That plan, if voters approve, would allow for around 2,100 new homes, along with open space and infrastructure changes. Residents of Deer Springs Oaks, funded by the nearby Golden Door Spa, have been making the case to voters that Measure B will make a bad traffic situation worse and create a dangerous trap in a wildfire zone. But they also worry that the project could have a more direct impact on their homes. The building of Newland Sierra would require the widening of Deer Springs Road, as well as changes to the nearby interchange with I-15. While Newland Sierra developers say these will not affect the mobile home park, the residents say they are not getting any guarantees from Newland Sierra, the County, or CalTrans."We don't know what they're going to do, how they're going to do it," said resident Georgeann Higgins. "They're so arrogant as to not inform us. These are our homes." Lawyers representing many of the residents obtained plans for some of the alternatives being considered by CalTrans. At least two would cause major changes to Deer Springs Oaks, including the possibility of residents losing property and a road being moved to go through the center of the complex."They impact the park big time," said resident Tony Eason. "They would destroy the park."A spokesperson from Newland Sierra told 10News that the maps being used by the residents are outdated. He sent 10News at statement: “This is just another desperate attempt by the Golden Door Spa and its army of lawyers to try to confuse and scare voters. This alternative was one of more than a dozen road improvement alternatives that was studied. It was ultimately rejected by CalTrans and is no longer an option. The real truth is that Measure B will create affordably priced homes for working families with open space, parks and trails - a better choice than the current General Plan that permits a two million square foot mega-commercial development, mansions and parking lots." ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Felicita County Park is just south of Escondido and is one of the largest and oldest parks in San Diego County. It’s named after a Native American woman who helped preserve history more than a century ago.Dove Toler is a San Pasqual Tribal Council member and has studied the rich Native American history of his own tribe, writing a book about his family’s past, and the history of the surrounding San Diego area. He said one of the most unique factors about Felicita LaChappa was the information she possessed.Toler said it’s estimated that LaChappa was born around 1820 during the Mexican era. He said during this era, Native people were dealing with the invasions of many different other cultures in addition to battling disease, so it’s incredible that she survived this period. This gave a window into a time period that many did not remember or live through.“She was able to survive, she didn’t get the diseases, she was able to marry, she was able to prosper in a sense that she survived,” he said, adding that, “Felicita survived during that turbulent time, those that were here were able to photograph her, interview her and now in honor of her, name this beautiful park after Felicita.”The park’s property was bought by San Diego County in 1929 and was named after LaChappa to honor her. To this day, there are still holes in some large rocks, evidence of the Native American people who once lived there. Toler estimates those artifacts to be 3,000 or 4,000 years old.Tolder added that the county has done a good job of adding signage around the park to educate the public on the history of LaChappa and the other Native Americans who once lived there. 1696

Employers may refuse to hire someone whose hair is in dreadlocks, a court of appeals has decided.The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed the civil rights suit against Catastrophe Management Services after it told a woman it would not bring her on board with dreadlocks and terminated a job offer.Reports indicate a human resources manager with the company told the candidate during a hiring meeting dreadlocks "tend to get messy." The EEOC?claimed it was a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964's Title VII, arguing dreadlocks are a "racial characteristic," according to NBC News.The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the company in this lawsuit has a "race-neutral grooming policy" and was not discriminatory, and dreadlocks are not a cultural practice, NBC News reported. 817
