SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ahead of Michelin's reveal of its first California guide to Michelin star restaurants, the food guide has named several San Diego stops as "Bib Gourmand" establishments.Michelin's Bib Gourmand category highlights restaurants that serve high-quality meals (two courses and a glass of wine or dessert) for or less. The restaurants are often regarded as hidden gems by Michelin inspectors, who include them in the guide to widen the variety of eateries in addition to the coveted Michelin star winners.RELATED: Have you 'gut' what it takes for these five San Diego food challenges? In San Diego, Michelin honored eight stops as Bib Gourmand restaurants and included inspectors' reviews:Campfire (2725 State St, Carlsbad) - Modern American fare: "Campfire in Carlsbad marries fine dining with the chef’s Mexican heritage. Cooking over fire is a staple with the 12-foot, wood-burning hearth."Cucina Sorella (4055 Adams Ave., San Diego) - Italian cuisine: "Cucina Sorella in San Diego embraces every season with pastas including tagliatelle with pistachio pesto, peas, pickled celery, mint and lime, and small plates like the carrot arancini with tarragon-basil aioli."Cucina Urbana (505 Laurel St., San Diego) - Italian cuisine: "Cucina Urbana’s menu in San Diego varies from Neapolitan-style pizzas to sophisticated dishes like a ribeye carpaccio with pickled beech mushrooms, shaved parmesan, malted melba toast crumbles, and dots of earthy porcini aioli."El Jardin (2885 Perry Rd., San Diego) - Classic Mexican fare: "El Jardin is a regional contemporary Mexican gem in San Diego's Liberty Station, with dishes that pop with creativity and flavor."Juniper & Ivy (2228 Kettner Blvd., San Diego) - New American cuisine: "Juniper & Ivy is a contemporary San Diego hit, loaded with clever dishes bursting with technique. The menu may change frequently, but the food is always fun and filled with high-quality ingredients."Kettner Exchange (2001 Kettner Blvd., San Diego) - Traditional & New American cuisine: "Kettner Exchange in San Diego serves global small plates, like bigeye tuna ribbons tangled with sliced avocado, radishes, nori chips, chive batons and a Makrut lime-soy marinade."Lola 55 (290 F St., San Diego) - Fine-casual Mexican fare: "Lola 55 in San Diego serves sophisticated tacos made with fresh ingredients. Counter service means queuing up is required, but while in line diners watch tortillas being prepared."Solare (2820 Roosevelt Rd., San Diego) - Italian cuisine: "Solare is an inspector favorite for pastas, bread and house-made sausages in San Diego. Produce, fish and meats come from local farms and fishermen."Tracy Borkum, owner of Urban Kitchen Group, which includes both Cucina Sorella and Cucina Urbana, said the honor highlighted their mission to "life the rising tide" of restaurants in town.“When we opened CUCINA urbana ten years ago, we were making a statement about the necessity to provide diners with value-driven menus focused on quality while using the best ingredients available to us. That still rings true today," Borkum said. "Our dedication to local farmers is stronger than ever, but just as important, we’ve become one of many restaurants contributing to the overall education of our local dining community. Our restaurants are helping to lift a rising tide here in San Diego, and that’s something we’re incredibly proud of."Michelin's 2019 California guide will feature 151 Bib Gourmand restaurants. The full guide is set to be revealed on June 3 in Huntington Beach. 3553

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A U.S. Marine stationed at MCAS Miramar has tested presumptive positive for coronavirus after returning from leave in Washington state. The Marine was returning to the base from leave in Washington state where he was visiting family, which is where officials believe he contracted the virus, officials on base familiar with the matter told 10News.A high level source in the military added that the Marine was tested on base for the virus after feeling ill and placed into quarantine while results were pending. The Marine is currently at home under quarantine, off base, that source added.A second Marine who returned from leave in Washington with the first service member is currently considered a person under investigation at Camp Pendleton. There, the second Marine is getting daily medical checks, according to I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF).RELATED COVERAGE:-- What's been canceled, postponed in San Diego, nationally due to coronavirus-- Gov. Newsom urges limited to no large gatherings in California amid coronavirus-- Another group of cruise ship passengers to be sent to MCAS MiramarI MEF said both Marines self-reported feeling ill after returning. Neither Marine had any contact with the passengers from the Grand Princess cruise ship under quarantine MCAS Miramar. The medical clinic that conducted the coronavirus screening has been sanitized and all I MEF Marines and sailors are following hygiene and sanitation guidelines from the CDC, according to I MEF.“We are taking every precaution to preserve the integrity of our warfighting forces, and stand ready to protect the health of our Marines, Sailors, family members, civilian employees, and our local communities," said Lt. Gen. Joseph L. Osterman, commanding general of I MEF. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man whose bike was stolen, decided to track the thief himself. But instead of turning him in, he turned the situation into something positive. Rob Greenfield never thought he'd see his bamboo bike again. “I didn’t lock it because I was sitting 20 feet from it and then I heard a noise and I looked back and saw the guy speeding off into the night with it.” When he found the thief, he didn't turn him in. He pulled him in for a hug, forgave him and took his bike back.  “It’s one of a kind bamboo bike but really what makes it special is that I’ve biked across the United States on it doing good deeds," he said. "So I’ve traveled thousands of miles across the country.” The theft made him want to do more good deeds, right here in San Diego. “I decided that rather than turning that into a really negative situation I would turn it into a positive situation," he said. "Knowing the feeling of having a bike stolen I decided I wanted to give bikes to kids who have had their bikes stolen and can’t afford a new one.” Greenfield started a GoFundMe to raise money for bikes. Bikes that he would then donate to the Boys and Girls Club - to kids whose bikes were stolen. He says it's a lesson in kindness that he hopes the thief who took his bike, and the kids who were given bikes, will pass on.“I can crowd out the bad with lots of good. So one bike stolen so I can give away 10 bikes, he said. "In that way it just wipes that bad deed out.”Rob gave away 10 bikes Tuesday and says that there is enough left for him to do it again.  1614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A similar Observation Wheel to those in England and Paris could come to Balboa Park for a short term stay. The Cohn Restaurant Group and Sky Views of America presented the idea of the Balboa Park Star to the Balboa Park Committee Meeting on October 1.They hope the wheel would attract more visitors and re-energize the park."We have operated these observation wheels during the pandemic," Vice President of Sky Views of America Ben Pickett said. The gondolas are enclosed and climate controlled. According to the presentation, they are sanitized after each ride and safety protocols comply with state, local and CDC guidelines. Masks would be required for passengers and staff. The presentation was met with excitement by the committee."I love the fact it is innovative and outside the box," Committee Member Victoria Curran said. "This is a terrific idea, I love it!" Committee Member Johanna Schiavoni added."Sometimes it's the craziest ideas that are the best ones," Committee Member Micah Parzen said. He cautioned there were concerns that needed to be worked out, like where and how much room the wheel would take up, if the wheel would take income away from competing museums and the juxtaposition of historic versus modern aesthetics.Pickett said they are working on promotions with the museums as well as discounts for families and military members.David Cohn compared the Balboa Park Star to the London Eye, La Grande Roue in Paris, or the Belfast Eye in Ireland. Most visitors at Balboa Park who spoke with ABC 10News like the idea."I think it would be super super cool, I would totally ride it," Visitor Erin Medina from Reno said excitedly."At first I thought, huh, seems more like a carnival than beautiful historic Balboa Park, but as you mentioned the Ferris wheel came here in 1915, so it might be kind of cool to bring it back, especially during the pandemic," San Diegan Clare Siragusa said. The R-50 is a modern wheel with gondolas that can seat eight people. The cost is estimated - per rider and tickets would be sold online and at the attraction. The proposed location is in the Plaza de Panama, near the Museum of Art."Anything that's for the kids, anything that's kind of easy, accessible entertainment, I support," San Diegan Samantha Pearson said.Entertainment at 148 feet in the air, just 52 feet short of the California Tower. The next presentation will be for the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Board October 28. Ultimately the city must approve the plan. 2513
