CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) - Food insecurity is a problem in San Diego year-round, and that problem has become worse with the pandemic.Campo, in San Diego's East County, is an area that struggles with access to food year-round because of its far distance. Many people choose to live in the area because of the rural setting, but also because of the lower cost of living.“We’re really below the poverty level out here. We’re lower in income out here and so grocery stores aren’t readily available right around the corner,” said Julie Atherton, a site coordinator for a food distribution that happens twice a month.Atherton said the closest major store is at least a half hour drive, so the pop-up food banks with food supplied by Feeding San Diego are crucial throughout the year, but the need has grown during the pandemic.“We serve a lot of seniors, a lot of families that have been affected by the COVID,” said Atherton.She said the older people who live in Campo are the ones who need to be more careful during the pandemic, so many of them are trying to avoid stores. This caution, combined with an already existing difficulty with getting to the store, has created a heightened problem surrounding food insecurity. CAPE YORK, Australia – Australian scientists say they’ve discovered a massive new coral reef that’s taller than the Empire State Building.The scientists were aboard a research vessel exploring the sea when they found the detached structure in the Great Barrier Reef last week, according to a press release from the Schmidt Ocean Institute.The institute says the “blade-like” reef is the first to be discovered in over 120 years.On Sunday, the institute’s team conducted a dive using an underwater robot to explore the new reef and learned that it's more than 500 meters high, the base is about 1.5 kilometers wide and it rises to its shallowest depth of only 40 meters below the sea surface.The newly discovered reef adds to the seven other tall detached reefs found in the area since the late 1800s.“This unexpected discovery affirms that we continue to find unknown structures and new species in our ocean,” said Wendy Schmidt, co-founder of Schmidt Ocean Institute. “The state of our knowledge about what’s in the ocean has long been so limited. Thanks to new technologies that work as our eyes, ears and hands in the deep ocean, we have the capacity to explore like never before. New oceanscapes are opening to us, revealing the ecosystems and diverse life forms that share the planet with us.”This isn’t the institute’s first big discovery of the year, though. CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — A gunman opened fire on two New Jersey police officers while they were sitting in their vehicle at a red light Tuesday night, wounding them in what authorities are calling an ambush attack.At least one suspect opened fire on the plainclothes detectives in Camden, which is located just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, said Camden County Police Chief J. Scott Thomson."The information we have thus far is that they were essentially ambushed," Thomson told reporters at a late night news conference. "A male walked up and began opening fire. We have anywhere between 10 and 25 rounds that were fired at the officers."One of the detectives was able to return fire, Thomson said, but it was not immediately clear if anyone else was shot. Thomson said his department was in communication with hospitals in the region.The detectives were taken to an area hospital and are expected to survive."At this point in time our officers have non-life-threatening injuries but not for the grace of God quite frankly," Thomson said. "The amount of rounds that were fired at close range and particularly through the windshield."Police continue to search for the suspect or suspects involved in the "unprovoked" attack."Maybe they did know they were police officers and that's the reason why they did it. Maybe they thought they were somebody else. CARLSBAD— It's the winter sport most famous for being a bit odd. Curling usually soars in popularity during the Winter Olympics, but you can also play year-round, even in sunny San Diego.Each week, members of “Curl San Diego” gather at the Icetown Skating Rink in Carlsbad to teach people curling. “It’s fascinating and something you don’t usually see, so everyone wants to try it,” said Owen McLachlan, the club’s vice president.The idea behind curling is simple. Shove a 42-pound rock as close to the center of a target as possible.In reality, it’s not so easy. “It’s usually called, ‘Chess on Ice,’” McLachlan said. Similar to bocce or shuffleboard, the team closest to the center gets the points.The sweeping heats up the ice, reducing friction and allowing the stone to travel farther and straighter.“An eighth of an inch can make or break a shot,” said Karen Coombs, who grew up playing in Canada, but now lives in San Diego.The Carlsbad club started after the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. Organizers say a lot of Canadians in San Diego wanted a place to play, and when the Winter Olympics come around..“We'll have 200 people for a learn to curl,” Coombs said. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police and the FBI are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man suspected of robbing a bank in Carlsbad.Carlsbad police said the robbery happened on Oct. 1, at 3:45 p.m., in the 6900 block of El Camino Real.According to police, a white man believed to be in his mid-20s entered the bank and demanded cash. The man referred to a gun during the robbery, but a firearm was not seen, police said.After getting an undisclosed amount of money, the man exited the branch and was last seen running toward Dove Lane.Police noted that “no vehicle has been associated with the suspect.”No injuries were reported during the incident.The suspected robber is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds and has a thin build.
