SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person was hit and killed following a crash in San Diego late Saturday night. CHP says a driver lost control and crashed on SR-94 just west of I-805 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. According to officers, the driver then got out of the car and started walking to an off-ramp when they were hit by another vehicle. The victim died at the scene, CHP says. The car that hit the victim fled the scene. At this time, it’s unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in either crash. 506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new trend is challenging people to put down their phones, but many people report feeling anxious when separated from their devices. Called nomophobia, short for no more phone phobia, 73 percent of teens in a recent addiction study reported feeling anxious when their phones had no charge according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens. That same study found that the teens checked their phones once every 23 minutes. New research suggests that our phones keep us in a persistent state of anxiety that’s only relieved by checking our phones Dr. Nancy Cheever told ABC News. Her research suggests phone-induced anxiety works on a positive feedback loop. According to a Rutgers University study, cellphone distraction in the classroom can lead to lower grades. The report lays out how dividing your attention between your phone and real life has serious consequences on how much information you retain. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A lifelong San Diego resident says he's sick of seeing overgrown brush in local medians — and he's willing to put himself in the weeds to resolve it.Adam Huntington says the weeds are giving local beach towns a bad look."Great people, great vibes, unfortunately our aesthetics aren't matching up to the great vibes right now," Huntington says. Next to a traffic sign, he says, "the weed was literally growing this high all around this."While some may be used to the weeds sprouting from Mission Blvd. medians, Huntington said he can't ignore the eyesore anymore. "I don't think anyone wants to see their beach look like this when the come to visit it," Huntington said.So the mortgage loan officer has been cleaning up the medians in his spare time. He first uses a weed wacker to cut down the brush, then rakes out the weeds, and finally sweeps and cleans them up. He's been posting his progress on social media. And it's not just Mission Beach.Clairemont Lutheran Church is doing similar work, organizing volunteers to clean up overgrown medians.Huntington has complained to the city and is frustrated with their response. But officials tell us they are trying to make this issue a priority.The mayor's allocated over a million dollars for vegetation and brush abatement in the current fiscal year. With that money the city has cleaned up weeds on 42 miles of median, completing more than 200 requests since July 1. The city blames excessive weed and vegetation growth to the wet winter and spring. Huntington plans to tackle other areas of the city, and says he'd be pleasantly surprised if the city beats him to it. 1646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Sunday morning after California Highway Patrol says his car flipped over before slamming into a tree in National City. According to CHP, the crash happened around 3 a.m. on I-805 south near Plaza Boulevard. Officers say the vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control and flipped several times before hitting the tree. RELATED: Driver traveling wrong way on I-805 collides with SUV in fiery wreckAt this time, it’s unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The crash was the second deadly collision on the 805 south in two days. Saturday morning, a wrong-way driver crashed into another vehicle on I-805 south near the I-8 connector. According to CHP, both drivers were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The wrong-way driver later died at the hospital. 832
