DALIAN, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China started the trading of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) futures contracts at 9 a.m. at DALIAN Commodity Exchange Monday, with September contract V909 opening 275 yuan higher at 6575 yuan per ton. After steel futures and rice futures, this is the third new futures trading launched in China this year. PVC is a kind of synthetic resin widely used in construction, plumbing, electric wires and packaging. China is the world's largest PVC manufacturer, with an annual output of 8.82 million tonnes last year. BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The new alliance between Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton Ltd. might lead to a monopoly operation and China should be prepared for anti-monopoly measures, warned an expert. Mei Xinyu, an economist with the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), told Xinhua Monday that China should closely watch the joint venture process of the two mining giants and be ready to work with other countries to curb market manipulation when necessary, with the help of the anti-monopoly law. Rio Tinto scrapped the proposed 19.5 billion U.S. dollars of investment by Aluminum Corp. of China, or Chinalco, on Friday. The company announced a cooperative venture with BHP Billiton, which would pay Rio Tinto 5.8 billion U.S. dollars to set up a joint venture to run the iron ore resources of both companies in west Australia. It was "something other than economic concern", said Zhang Yansheng, director of the Institute of Foreign Trade of the National Development and Reform Commission. Almost half of China's iron ore needed to be imported, more than half of which was imported from Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, according to Shan of CISA. Colin Barnett, premier of Western Australia, told Australian media last Friday China was not on the list of approvals that the two companies needed to obtain. Internationally they would need the approval of the European Union and possibly the U.S. Justice Department, apart from investigations at nation and state level, he said. Also, Zhang Junsheng, director of the WTO Research Institute at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, said China might not have a say on the issue, as neither Rio Tintoor BHP Billiton had an affiliated company in China.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung Soo described Friday the rapid growth of bilateral ties with China as "unprecedented". "We have witnessed over five million ROK and Chinese people visit each other's country and the two-way trade volume expand 26 times bigger during the 17 years since ROK and China forged a diplomatic relationship", Han said. Han made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua on the sideline of a spring conference of the Institute of International Finance in Beijing. He said being neighbors, cultural similarity and friendship between the two peoples offered a solid foundation for the two nations to foster ties. China and the ROK agreed to upgrade their "comprehensive and cooperative partnership" to "strategic cooperative partnership" in May, 2008 during the ROK president Lee Myung-bak's first visit to China. Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Han Seung-soo (R) receives interview by a journalist from Xinhua News Agency in Beijing, capital of China, June 12, 2009. "We can see profound changes take place in almost all the fields of bilateral cooperation since then, especially in trade and economy, culture, education and youth exchange," Han said. He also recalled President Lee's visit last May to Dujiangyan, a city in Sichuan Province severely damaged by an 8.0-magnitude quake. "The ROK people were so concerned and feel deep sympathy about those who lost theirs lives or families in the disaster," Han said. He told Xinhua that the schoolboy Wei Yuehao who was held in the arms by President Lee during his visit to the quake zone was invited last month to the Cheong Wa DAE, the ROK presidential office "as a commemoration". Han said the ROK was severely hit by the financial turmoil and the ROK government, in a bid for the economic recovery, has come up with policies to stimulate domestic demand, step up financial investment and expand employment opportunity, which had worked. Han said China was the biggest trade partner and exporting market to the ROK, and he expressed his appreciation for the measures that China adopted to curb the effects of the financial crisis, noting that it would be a "win-win" solution if the two nations could work together to tackle the crisis. The prime minister also called on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to abandon its nuclear test scheme and return to the six-party talks to address the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula at an early date. On May 25, the DPRK announced it has "successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test," which Pyongyang said has demonstrated its "defensive nuclear deterrent." After the test, it also fired some short-range missiles. "The status of a non-nuclear peninsula is not only a must for the peace and stability on the peninsula, but also for that of East Asia and the world," Han said, expressing his hope that China, which chairs the six-party talks, could continue to play its positive and constructive role. Launched in 2003, the six-party talks grouped China, DPRK, ROK, the United States, Russia and Japan. The talks have been stalled since the top negotiators last met in Beijing last December.
EDINBURGH, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said Friday during a visit to Scotland that China hopes to strengthen cooperation with Scotland, especially in the areas of education, culture, tourism and finance. Wang, who is on an official visit to Britain, spoke during a meeting with Alex Salmond, Scotland's first minister. Both sides praised the friendship between China and Scotland and expressed a readiness to strengthen their cooperation as part of an effort to promote the all-round strategic partnership between China and Britain. During the meeting, the two also exchanged views on how to tackle the global financial crisis. "Currently we should further strengthen confidence in the market and recover the functions of the financial market as soon as possible," Wang said. After the outbreak of the Asian financial crisis, China adopted a series of measures that pulled it through the trouble and helped to maintain the stability of the financial market, Wang said. Salmond spoke highly of the economic stimulus packages arranged by the Chinese government to tackle the current financial crisis. Wang arrived at Edinburgh on Friday after a visit to the Europe Union
BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that China and Germany should join hands to combat trade and investment protectionism. The premier made the remark during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and other issues of common concern. Wen said cooperation between China and Germany, both among the world's major economies, is developing smoothly in a variety of fields. He said the two sides should continue to handle their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep up high-level exchanges. The two nations, Wen said, also should strengthen communications and coordination to push for a healthy and stable development of their bilateral ties. China, Wen said, always adheres to a win-win strategy in opening to the outside world and insists on the maintenance of a fair and open market environment. He said China would never discriminate against foreign enterprises or products. The premier said China's determination to cope with climate change is firm, its operations active, and its measures effective. China, Wen said, is ready to enhance collaboration with Germany in developing new and renewable energy and maximizing energy efficiency. China also will participate in related negotiations and work with other countries to help bring about positive results at the December UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Wen said. Merkel said Germany is very satisfied with the development of China-Germany relations. She said Germany is ready to work with China to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen trade and economic cooperation, and oppose trade and investment protectionism. Germany also is prepared to jointly deal with the challenges brought about by the global financial crisis and advance bilateral ties, she said. Merkel said she hoped that the two countries would strengthen communications and jointly tackle the issue of climate change.
