SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Fairgrounds announced layoffs Thursday amid the coronavirus pandemic.According to the fairgrounds, staffing will be reduced by 58 percent due to a loss of revenue."Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent ban on mass gatherings, the 22nd District Agricultural Association|Del Mar Fairgrounds (22nd DAA) has suffered severe financial losses to its income streams."The fairgrounds says since March, revenues have fallen by 66 percent "Combined with the postponement of the San Diego County Fair and no patrons for this year’s summer horse racing meet, revenues are estimated to be down 92 percent by the end of the summer."The fairgrounds will give employees 120 days of continued employement with an official layoff date of October 15.“It is with a heavy heart that we must make the difficult decision to reduce staffing at this time,” said Tim Fennell, CEO and General Manager of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “Until it is safe to host events again, reducing our staffing levels is crucial to the survival of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We must preserve this community treasure in order to continue its legacy for future generations as an economic engine for the region and a beloved entertainment and education destination. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego announced Tuesday that the transformed Super 8 motel in Egger Highlands will be used to temporarily serve families and children experiencing homelessness amid COVID-19. The city's purchase and transformation of the motel was approved by the City Council in 2017. The transitional housing units will eventually be used to serve those enrolled in the San Diego Misdemeanants At-Risk Track. The program was created by the City Attorney's Office for chronic misdemeanor offenders with acute drug addiction, according to the city. For now, the recently-renovated motel will provide temporary housing for children and families struggling with homelessness. “We’re looking at every opportunity to help those families and children experiencing homelessness during these trying times,” Mayor Faulconer said. “The rehabilitation of this motel couldn’t come at a better time as the need for temporary shelter has never been greater. I want to thank City Attorney Elliott for partnering with me to provide safety and relief to so many families as we fight to stop the spread of this deadly virus.”The city started moving families to motel rooms in March to allow for proper physical distancing. “During this challenging time, it's more important than ever to ensure our most vulnerable community members are protected,” City Attorney Elliott said. “I am gratified to be able to transition our S.M.A.R.T. on Palm facility to provide temporary emergency housing for families in this time of dire need.”The facility has 42 transitional housing rooms, 39 double-bed units, and three units that meet the Americans with Disability Act standards, the city says. 1693

Voters who are interested in getting their ballots in before Election Day can now do so at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office.Early voting began on Monday, May 6 after the United States Postal Service sent out more than 1 million mail ballots. These ballots appeared in voters' mailboxes the very same day.Early voting continues through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and until the polls close on Election Day at 8 p.m.The Registrar of Voters Office is open for weekend voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The homeless population in San Diego County has decreased over the last year, according to a San Diego task force.  Every year, the county conducts a tally of how many people are homeless on a single night in January. This year’s count, done on January 26, was coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless.The task force says the number of homeless throughout the county has decreased six percent to 8,576. However, the number of homeless veterans went up to 1,300 - a 24 percent increase. Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Homeless Task Force Chairman, says permanent housing still needs to be a priority. “Seeing the overall number decline was a positive reversal, but there are far too many swings in data to declare a trend or to not see other areas where we need to increase our focus,” said San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who chairs the RTFH. “We continue to face many challenges, highlighted by a lack of new housing, a condition that squeezes hardest those with the fewest resources."RELATED: Volunteers count number of homeless living in San DiegoThe numbers from the federally-mandated Point-in-Time Count (PITC) show the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in each of the county’s 18 cities, as well as in unincorporated areas.The County will present the full report, with a more in-depth analysis of the data, to the task force at 3 p.m.The PITC is meant to help communities and policymakers understand their regions’ most current challenges and areas with the most pressing need for limited funding. 1594

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is asking for the public's help to connect dozens of victims to the confessions made by a convicted serial killer.Samuel Little, 79, has confessed to 93 murders to date, according to the FBI, and all of his confessions are believed to be credible. The murders took place between 1970 and 2005 in multiple states across the country.The FBI says Little is the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history. He was arrested in 2012 and extradited to California on a narcotics charge. After his arrest, Little's DNA was connected to three unsolved homicides between 1987 and 1989. He was convicted and sentenced in 2014 to three consecutive life terms without parole.In 2018, Little provided the FBI with detailed information on dozens of additional murders he is believed to have committed across the country, including murders in Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio.Law enforcement have been able to verify 50 of Little's confessions, but that leaves dozens of victims still unnamed and yet to be found. Fifteen of those cases are in the Los Angeles area.The FBI says Little confessed to strangling his victims, although most of their deaths were originally ruled overdoses or accidental. Some bodies have never been found.Little was convicted of two crimes in San Diego in 1984 after he raped and beat two women. Retired Detective Sergeant Wayne Spees was a rookie police officer on patrol just before 5 a.m. that October morning, when he and his partner discovered Little at a vacant lot near Market Street."He comes out of the back seat ... zipping his pants up ... He's insisting that he and his wife were just leaving," said Spees.Wedged inside the car was a prostitute, naked and bloodied. Little had choked her unconscious. Spees arrested him and spent several hours with him at the hospital while evidence was collected."He said, 'I didn't rape that ****. I just kicked the **** out of her. I'm going to kill that whore.' He had no remorse.
