 Las Vegas is getting set to host the first major event since the 1 October shooting.The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon has 40,000 runners registered for Sunday's races.As one of the rare events that shuts down the Las Vegas Strip, security concerns are heightened this year in light of the recent tragedy."Up until the shooting I honestly didn't even think about security as an issue and as soon as that happened, I was a little nervous," said Tom Sullivan, who will be running his first marathon.Captain Andy Walsh with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is in charge of security this year.He says marathon safety really changed after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2014, and 1 October changed it again."We've added some counter-sniper surveillance posts along the route," Walsh said. "We're going to have coverage from our helicopter unit."He added there will be 350 officers on the ground plus several large vehicles like dump trucks and buses to act as makeshift barriers.Some runners say crossing the finish line has become even more imperative now than ever."Just because this may be harder or scarier, it's not going to stop me," Sullivan said.Esther Reincke is dedicating her run to Cameron Robinson, who died in October's shooting.Robinson was her co-worker and running buddy."I can run now and Cameron can't," Reincke said. "That's really moving for me, to have somebody that was so young and so full of life and really just getting his life going."Before the race Sunday, 58 white cross memorials will be moved from the 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign to a museum.If you are heading down to the marathon, there will be some road closures to keep in mind.  A woman wielding a kitchen knife has attacked at least 14 children at a kindergarten in Chongqing in central China, local police said Friday.Chongqing City Banan District police said the children were slashed as they walked back to class after their morning exercises at Yudong New Century Kindergarten about 9.30 a.m. local time.Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed small children bleeding from severe cuts to their faces at the entrance of the kindergarten as stunned adults looked on.School security guards and staff restrained the 39-year-old attacker and took her into custody. Video from the scene appeared to show angry onlookers attempting to hit and kick the woman after she was detained.Chongqing resident Xia Yang said the attack had shocked residents of the city, a metropolis of some 30 million people.Nearby residents said the kindergarten doesn't have any outdoor space for the children, and they have to use a local public park for their morning exercises."It happened when the children were entering the school gate ... The attacker just ran at them with a knife. The teachers were dumbstruck," said Zhang Jing, who lives close to the school.He told CNN old people out shopping for groceries had intervened to stop the attack.An unknown number of students were taken to a nearby hospital following the incident, according to police.Video from the hospital showed adults wailing in grief as children covered in blood were rushed from ambulances into the building. In another video, a child whose head is wrapped in bandages was pushed past on a gurney, as crowds looked on.Zhang said after the knife attack and recent scandals over faulty medicine for children, he's increasingly skeptical of the government's ability to look after his own daughter."It is terrifying. Police are continuing to investigate.Friday's incident isn't the first time school children in China have been hurt by people wielding knives. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Rapper Snoop Dogg and singer Stevie Wonder were among those who took the Staples Center stage Thursday to honor rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was gunned down in front of a clothing store he owned in the South Los Angeles community he was dedicated to revitalizing. The ceremony was the first of its kind at Staples Center since a memorial service for Michael Jackson was held there in 2009.Thousands attended the service, which got began about an hour late due to long lines of people trying to get into the arena. The event began with tracks being played from Hussle's album "Victory Lap.'' At one point, a balloon is believed to have popped, startling the crowd and prompting many people to push into the street. Police formed skirmish lines to push the crowd back, and appeared to restore order without arrests or major injuries.More officers were brought in as the procession neared the location to help keep the street clear.As the procession approached the store around 5:40 p.m., a security team encircled the hearse and walked alongside the vehicle to escort it through the crowd and allow it to keep moving -- at a crawling pace.As the hearse moved into the area, the boisterous crowd became respectfully calm, with spectators lifting their cell phones to snap photos. The convoy repeated came to a stop when people pushed too far into the street, blocking the hearse's path.The 33-year-old Grammy-nominated rapper -- whose real name was ErmiasJoseph Asghedom -- was fatally shot March 31 in front of The Marathon Clothing store. Last week, 29-year-old Eric Ronald Holder Jr., an aspiring rapper and acquaintance of Hussle, pleaded not guilty to one count each of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, along with two counts of attempted murder.Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Teresa Sullivan ordered Holder to be jailed in lieu of million bail while awaiting his next court appearance May 10, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to allow the case against him to proceed to trial.Holder could face a potential life prison sentence if convicted as charged, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said Holder got into some type of personal dispute with the rapper outside the store, then left and returned with a handgun. Hussle was shot in the head and body and died at a hospital, according to police and the coroner's office.The police chief declined to discuss the nature of the disagreement between Holder and Hussle but stressed the shooting appeared to be a result of that dispute, not any type of gang rivalry or feud.Hussle transformed himself from a South Los Angeles gang member to a rap musician and channeled his success into efforts to help others stay out of gangs. He bought shoes for students, re-paved basketball courts and provided jobs and shelter for the homeless.Hussle helped renovate a Mid-City roller rink and redeveloped the strip mall that housed his Marathon Clothing shop where he was fatally wounded.On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council is expected to adjourn its regular meeting in honor of Hussle, according to Councilman Marqueece Harris Dawson, a friend of Hussle's. At that same meeting, Harris-Dawson is also expected to introduce a motion to rename the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard as "Ermias `Nipsey Hussle' Asghedom Square.'' 7342
