(KGTV) — A 99-year-old local man who survived Pearl Harbor was honored this week and shared his memories about the attack.Retired Marine Corps Captain John Campbell, 99, was honored at a luncheon in Solana Beach on Friday where he spoke about the attack 78 years ago. Campbell, one of only a handful of Pearl Harbor survivors today, recalled the confusion when Japanese planes began bombing the Hawaiian naval base in the early hours of Dec. 7, 1941."We thought originally it was the Army-Navy maneuvers ... then we saw our airplanes catch fire," Campbell said. "We had no idea and you're still stunned probably to the next day trying to figure out what it is."The surprise of the attack levying everyone on the Hawaiian base overwhelmed and anxious."The first night in Pearl Harbor, you didn't dare light a cigarette because everyone was so trigger happy and they'd shoot before they even thought about it," Campbell said.RELATED: Post Office in Poway to be named after Pearl Harbor survivorThe veteran says he was thankful the attack didn't continue further, noting the base would've been incapable of fighting back at that point."We had no airplanes. The ships were out of duty ... they were still burning," Campbell said. "Those carriers are like cities, when they go down they can burn for years."Campbell recalls facing the enemy in the surprise raid."It was 8 o'clock sharp and they made four runs on us ... You could see the gold in their teeth, they were smiling," Campbell recalled. "And we didn't know what the hell was happening."Campbell's family wouldn't know whether or not he survived the attack for two days.RELATED: Just 1 of 3 living Pearl Harbor survivors will attend ceremony"It took me two days to get through [to my family]," Campbell said. "Everyone was pretty jumpy for a week or so. They thought that the Japanese were going to follow up on their attack."Since the attack, Campbell says he's lived a fulfilling life working in various executive positions at ABC stations and owner of amusement parks in Florida. "I've been lucky all my life ... I even became the president of a television network. I owned my own theme parks ... I can't complain. I really had a fantastic life," Campbell said.Campbell was one of around 50,000 service members who were at Pearl Harbor during the attack. More than 2,400 Americans were killed during the raid that prompted the U.S. to enter World War II."The service is a camaraderie. Especially when you're under fire you're really close to your buddies. Starbucks announced changes to their loyalty program giving customers more ways to pay for their drinks while earning stars.Customers have complained for years about the need to reload their Starbucks card in order to spend money at the coffee giant and earn loyalty stars.In order for customers to earn stars in the Starbucks Rewards loyalty program, customers had to use a Starbucks card or gift card to pay. This forced regular customers to constantly reload their card to ensure there was enough money for their purchases.Starbucks announced Tuesday they will allow alternative payments in a few months, and still allow members to earn stars or purchases. Alternative methods include debit/credit cards, cash, and select mobile wallets.However, there’s a catch.When the changes take place, customers paying with their Starbucks card or gift card will earn two loyalty stars per spent, and those paying with alternative methods will earn one star per spent. Southwest Airlines says it has canceled roughly 1 per cent of its scheduled flights as it carries out inspections prompted by an engine failure that led to a passenger's death last week. About 40 flights were impacted.The affected Southwest Boeing 737 took off Tuesday morning from New York, headed for Dallas. About 20 minutes into the flight, at about 32,500 feet, a fan blade broke off the engine and shrapnel shattered a window.Jennifer Riordan, 43, and a mother of two, was almost sucked out of the broken window and pulled back inside by fellow passengers. She died from blunt force trauma at a hospital after the plane's emergency landing in Philadelphia. 670

(KGTV) — Video captured Friday showed another bluff failure in the Solana Beach area, weeks after a series of small bluff collapses.Kelly Nelle captured a small bluff failure at a site that appeared taped off due to a previous bluff collapse. No one was injured.Several parts of Fletcher Cove were taped off in August as sandstone tumbled about 75 feet down to the beach. It isn't clear if Friday's collapse was at the same site, but the area was already taped off and appeared to have a pile of sediment at the base of the cliff side.In late August, Torrey Pines beach goers were warned of bluff collapses after a section fell to the ground. In early August, a massive section of rock fell in Encinitas, killing three people.As temperatures rise and bring more locals out to the coast, officials cautioned visitors to walk 25 - 40 feet away from all bluffs and not to walk around barricades because large rocks could still fall.Video from Friday showed some smaller rocks falling before the larger section fell onto the Solana Beach spot. 1068

Something rare happened today in Washington. A bipartisan bill was signed into law. The Great American Outdoors Act is the culmination of years of environmental and conservation negotiations. WHAT IT DOESThe first thing this legislation does is create a funding stream to improve National Parks in this country. While visitors have increased 50 percent since 1980, funding has not and it has created a maintenance backlog. Currently, there are around billion dollars worth of repairs needed in America's National Parks. The Great American Outdoors Act sends around billion over the next five years to improve maintenance. PROJECTS EXPECTEDIn Colorado, it means Rocky Mountain National Park will get improved sewage systems; in Montana, Glacier National Park will upgrade their camp grounds; in Arizona, the Grand Canyon will get drinking water pipelines fixed; in the Everglades of Florida, storm-damaged buildings can be repaired; and at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, 100-year-old trail heads will be updated with better parking lots and easier entrances. LAND AND WATER CONSERVATION FUNDApart from improving the maintenance in America's National Parks, the legislation also, for the first, permanently funds the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Money from that fund goes to improve and protect lands across the country. Revenue comes from oil and gas drilling around the country. 1407
