TAIPEI, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), has called for calm response to the upcoming cross-Strait talks.     The SEF and the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) plan to hold new round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung city on Dec. 22.     Chiang said issues to be discussed during the talks included labor cooperation in the fishing industry, cooperation in inspection and quarantine of agricultural products and standard measurement authentication and avoidance of double taxation.     Those issues were closely related to the health and benefits of people across the Strait, he said, adding that he hoped agreements could be reached to improve the foundation of cross-Strait relations.     It is the fourth round of talks since the SEF and the ARATS resumed negotiations in June last year following a 10-year suspension.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States on Tuesday voiced support for the peace and stability in South Asia.     "The two sides welcomed all efforts conducive to peace, stability and development in South Asia," said a joint statement issued after a meeting here between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     They support the efforts of Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight terrorism, maintain domestic stability and achieve sustainable economic and social development, said the statement.     They also pledged support for the improvement and growth of relations between India and Pakistan.     The two sides are ready to strengthen communication, dialogue and cooperation on issues related to South Asia and work together to promote peace, stability and development in that region, according to the statement. 

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed that more efforts should be made to improve the people's livelihood while promoting economic growth.     Li made the remarks during a recent visit to north China's Shanxi Province, where he chatted with village cadres and laid-off workers. He said it is an important duty for the Party and government to solve the basic livelihood problems of the people.     The goal of the nation's economic growth is to improve the people's well-being, he said. HARBIN, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao conveyed new year greetings to workers, farmers, local residents and officials during his visit to northeastern Heilongjiang Province on the first two days of the year.     Braving the freezing weather, Wen visited the cities of Daqing and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang. It was Wen's third visit to Daqing since 2003. At Daqing oilfield, he said Daqing people had not only produced two billion tonnes of oil for the country, but also the invincible Daqing spirit which was kept well over the past five decades. JINGGANGSHAN, Jiangxi, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called on the country's police and other law enforcement organs to improve their capabilities to better serve the people and rely on the people to safeguard social harmony and stability. Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a meeting attended by police chiefs during his visit to Jinggangshan, where late Chairman Mao Zedong and other revolutionists established the CPC's first rural revolutionary base in 1927, in east China's Jiangxi Province.     Law enforcement departments and police should handle public's complaints with earnest attitude, improve their credibility in law enforcement and rely on the masses of people to safeguard social harmony and stability, said Zhou, who also heads the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee.     He also called on the police officials to be innovative in their work and to strengthen the building of grassroots police organs.     Zhou visited the Jinggangshan martyrs' memorial park to pay respect to more than 48,000 revolutionary martyrs buried there, late Chairman Mao's former residence and other revolutionary sites on Tuesday.     Meng Jianzhu, Minister of Public Security who also attended the meeting, asked police departments at all levels to explore new methods for safeguarding national security and social stability.
