MARATHON, Fla. -- Several dozen endangered sea turtles were flown from New England to Florida and are receiving treatment for something called “cold stunning.”The young sea turtles became stranded on beaches near Cape Cod, Massachusetts after overexposure to cold water. Being exposed to cold water for too long can result in a hypothermic reaction called “cold stunning,” and can cause turtles to stop eating and swimming. They were flown to the warmer climate of Florida over the Thanksgiving weekend and are being treated at various aquariums, turtle hospitals and facilities. Some of them may have to stay at the facilities for up to a year for testing and treatment.About 40 young Kemp Ridley sea turtles were taken to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida. Another two dozen were taken to other marine centers, including the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. The rescue was made possible by a group of private pilots called “Turtles Fly Too,” who donated their planes, fuel and time to transport the animals. The turtles traveled in towel-lined banana boxes, according to local media. 1092

Men who work in construction and extraction had the highest rates of suicide in the United States, according to a report published Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For women, suicide rates were highest among those who work in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media. From 2000 to 2016, the suicide rate among the US working-age population -- people 16 to 64 -- increased 34%, the report says.Using information from the 17 states that participated in the 2012 and 2015 National Violent Death Reporting System, the CDC analyzed the suicide deaths of 22,053 Americans of working age. Occupations were classified using the Standard Occupational Classifications from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2015, the construction and extraction field had the highest rates of suicides for men, with 53.2 suicides per 100,000 working people. Michael Jordan has long been associated with the game of basketball, first as a six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls, and currently the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. You can now call him a NASCAR team owner.Denny Hamlin announced a partnership on Monday with Jordan as the two will form a single-car team featuring Bubba Wallace who will drive the team’s lone car. The team will begin operations in 2021.Hamlin will continue driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.“Bubba has shown tremendous improvement since joining the Cup Series and we believe he's ready to take his career to a higher level,” Hamlin said. “He deserves the opportunity to compete for race wins and our team will make sure he has the resources to do just that. Off the track, Bubba has been a loud voice for change in our sport and our country. MJ and I support him fully in those efforts and stand beside him.”Wallace became a newsmaker over the summer when a noose was discovered by NASCAR officials in his garage. NASCAR later announced that it believed that Wallace was not the target of a hate crime after investigating the origins of the noose, adding that the noose had been hanging in the garage’s stall for several months.Drivers and crew members stood in solidarity with Wallace following the incident. Fellow drivers pushed Wallace’s car to the front of the field moments before a race in June got underway.Wallace became the first Black full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver in 2018 in more than four decades. He instantly found success as a full-time driver, finishing as the runner-up of the 2018 Daytona 500.Wallace has been a vocal opponent of the use of Confederate flags at NASCAR events. During the summer, while the US debated the use of Confederate symbols, NASCAR announced it would be removing all Confederate symbols from raceways. 1829

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The coronavirus pandemic has already triggered unprecedented election disruptions in the 2020 cycle. Now, those worried about suppressed turnout in the upcoming general elections are focused on Kentucky.Voters in the Bluegrass State will vote in primary elections on Tuesday, and the virus has already had a stark impact on the election. In Louisville, the state's largest city, only one polling place has been designated. That polling place will now serve as the only option for in-person voting on Tuesday for an area representing about 600,000 people — including a large portion of the state's Black population.Voters who didn't cast mail-in ballots could face long lines — just as voters in Georgia did earlier this month when dozens of polling stations were closed due to COVID-19. During Georgia's primary, voters waited in line late into the night in Atlanta and Savannah in order to cast their ballots.Kentucky turned to widespread mail-in absentee voting in an agreement between the state's Democratic governor and Republican secretary of state in response to the pandemic. But voters not requesting absentee ballots will have to show up Tuesday. The state's primary, typically in late May, was delayed more than a month.Voters in New York state will also vote in primary elections on Tuesday — days after election officials expressed concern about the state's mail-in voting system to The New York Times. Officials said Friday that thousands of ballots had yet to be delivered to voters, meaning they likely wouldn't arrive on time before Tuesday's election. At stake are several high-profile primaries that could have a significant impact on the shape of Congress. In Kentucky, Charles Booker and Amy McGrath are facing off in a Democratic primary for the right to face Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in November. McGrath, a moderate candidate, was the heavy favorite, but the progressive Booker has closed the polling gap in recent weeks. In New York, Rep. Elliot Engle (D) — the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — is in danger of losing his seat to another progressive candidate, first-time candidate Jamaal Brown. 2172
