SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego ranks as a top contender for STEM jobs in the country and to show off our local talent, the first San Diego Tech Women's Summit kicks off Saturday. The conference held at Qualcomm brings in hundreds of engineers, researchers, scientists and every woman in between. Behind it all, there's CEO of Athena Holly Smithson, video game coder Jillian Moore, and senior program manager at Intuit KImbra Brookstein. The summit creates a space where women can share stories and learn new skills to skyrocket their careers in STEM. "So our goal is to expose them at an earlier age expose them to that community so people can really see the awesome work you can do."With more than 75 percent of STEM jobs held by men, they're all facing a similar battle. "Women are having to go through work environments where it feels like a boy's club," said Moore. "Those are some of the soft skills that they're not teaching you at UCSD school of engineering perhaps," said Smithson. "How are you doing to self-advocate your superpower and why you're so excited to be a part of the team?"The event comes as San Diego ranks as one of the top tech hubs in the country. "We have companies like Apple and Amazon and Tesla that have just come into the San Diego marketplace in the last 18 months," said Smithson. And the opportunities are only growing. "The goal would be for folks to walk away with that understanding and really new resources and tools to stay in San Diego," said Brookstein. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police Saturday asked the public for help locating a possibly depressed and suicidal man who disappeared from his home this week.Police said Miguel Antonio Venegas-Elizarrazaz was last seen by his roommates at his home at 145 South 45th St. on Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State lawmakers approved funding to hire an additional 230 employees for California DMVs. The decision comes on the same day they shut down a proposal to audit long wait times at offices throughout the state. DMV officials say they've seen a surge in demand at offices from people getting the new REAL ID License, which you can't do by mail or online. State Assemblymember Phil Ting is spearheading an effort to shorten the wait. He says wait times at some offices were up to seven hours. "We've identified some technological fixes so that people can enter the information," said Ting. "There would be less clerical work."In July, lawmakers added an extra million to the DMV budget. The extra funding would allow them to hire 500 more employees, offer Saturday services and upgrades to some self-service kiosks. Assemblymember Ting got onboard when he had to go to the DMV in San Francisco and saw the line wrapped around the block. "It looked like people were waiting in line for a rock concert," said Ting. "Not for their driver's license."He says another problem was that people were waiting too long to renew. "People couldn't get appointments before their licenses were expiring," said Ting. "We're asking to send those notices out much further in advance."DMV officials are also rolling out new programs like text message notifications and expanding self-service terminals to 50 grocery stores later this year. Drivers who want to get a REAL ID would still have to go into an office. DMV officials say you can expect to see reduced wait times by the middle of September, but they don't expect what they call "reasonable" wait times until December. They said that means 15 minutes for an appointment and 45 minutes for walk-ins. 1837
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego teachers took to short-term rentals to subsidize their annual salary last year, raking in .7 million, according to Airbnb.The recent study by the short-term rental website says about 15 percent of San Diego's Airbnb community is made up of teachers. Annually, those teachers typically host about 56 nights a year.While San Diego's teaching community made more than million over the course of 2017, the bulk of those earnings came during the summer months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sandy Sim came all the way from Fallbrook just to find out that she was locked out of 101 Ash Street. She was one of multiple people who came to the downtown building thinking the skyscraper was open for city business. Instead, it was shuttered Wednesday after the county found traces of asbestos on one the 17th floor. "I think the building should be removed, should be brought down, and just put up another building. It will probably be cheaper too," said Ignacio Alcaraz, a Spring Valley resident who had just left City Hall. The city inked the deal for the former Sempra Headquarters in 2017 with the plan of moving 1,100 employees into it to save on rent. But the building has remained vacant for all but about a month since then, after the city discovered numerous problems and needed repairs. City workers finally moved in about a month ago, but vacated last weekend after the county served the city with a violation for the asbestos."I think it's taken a horrible toll," said Councilwoman Barbara Bry, who took office after the deal was signed. "I was downtown over the weekend and noticed workers literally wheeling boxes and files and chairs out of 101 Ash."The city insists the building is safe, conducting 235 air quality tests in the last few months, and that it closed the building in an abundance of caution. Bry is now calling for an audit into how the city could do a deal like this. She said she cannot understand why the city would take possession of a property that old "as is.""That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said. Bry has forwarded her request to the city's auditor. Meanwhile, the Mayor's office has authorized the city to hire an outside consultant to determine how this deal came to be. 2005
