They were at a forum to discuss various topics such as education, culture issues, goals and overcoming obstacles.The event moderator was actor, comedian and Detroit-native Keegan-Michael Key. Democrats felt they had a chance to win control of the Senate following the 2020 Election. And while hope is quickly evaporating after losing a few key races, Dems may still have a path to controlling the upper chamber — through Georgia.That's because the Peach State is choosing not just one, but two new Senators in 2020. And because Georgia uses a runoff system to elect its Senators, some candidates will continue campaigning in the state for a few weeks.In Georgia, Senate candidates need to win 50% of the vote on election day in order to secure their seats. If neither candidate reaches the 50% threshold, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff election in early January.This year, first-term Republican Sen. David Perdue is up for re-election and faces a stiff challenge from Democrat Jon Ossoff, who won a primary election earlier this year. Prior to election day, polls showed a tight race between the two candidates.As of Thursday morning, Perdue currently has just barely 50% of the vote — but the margin is razor-thin and shrinking. As election officials continue to count mail-in ballots, which tend to skew blue, Democrats hope votes for Ossoff and Libertarian candidate Shane Hazel drop Perdue's vote count under the 50% margin to force a runoff.In addition, Georgians this year were also tasked with selecting a replacement for third-term Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired in 2019 due to health problems. Though businesswoman Kelly Loeffler was tapped by Gov. Brian Kemp to replace Isakson, Kemp announced that a special election would be held in 2020 so voters could select who finished Isakson's term.Because the special election had no primary vote, it was always expected to end in a runoff. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, currently has the most votes (about 33%) among all candidates — but likely because Loeffler and Rep. Doug Collins waged an expensive inter-Republican fight for the right to compete in a runoff. Loeffler (26%) tallied more votes than Collins (20%), meaning she'll face Warnock in a runoff election early next year.As of Thursday morning, both the Republican and Democrat caucus hold 48 Senate seats, with four races still to be called by the Associated Press. In addition to the two Georgia races, Senate seats in Alaska and North Carolina still remain up for grabs.Should Republicans prevail in Alaska and North Carolina, Democrats' last hope to control the Senate lies in the presidency — since the Vice President is the tiebreak vote — and in Georgia, where they could possibly net two flips in January, should Perdue's share of the votes dip under 50%.Georgia's runoff elections will take place on Jan. 5. 2674

Detective Scott Mandella is hiking near Burien, Washington. With him are two outreach workers. They’re looking for homeless people who, Mandella says, live in the woods.Right now, he’s looking for someone in particular: a man by the name of Ed Davis.“Have you made any efforts to reach out to the VA lately? What do you got going on man? You deserve a lot more than this,” Mandella said to Davis after locating him.Davis replied, "Well, I applied for the stimulus and all that."Davis says he’s lived in these woods for about three years. It's been three years with no heat, dealing with the elements, and fighting to survive.His story is a lot like others who end up homeless. He made some mistakes, and now he’s paying for them.“Years ago, I sold my house, out in the peninsula. I had good intentions of reinvesting it," he recalled. "When I have problems, I kind of get into a self-destructive mode, and I blew the money. Started doing drugs and everything. You know, I battled with it for quite some time and ended up out here,” said Davis.It may not look like much, but Davis has built a walkway down to where he sleeps, decorated his front entrance, and he even keeps fresh milk from spoiling by cooling it in the stream that runs by.He isn’t the only one who lives here. The outreach workers brought sandwiches and left some for the other people living in the camp, who were present at the time.But Mandella came for a different reason, and it was to let Davis know he has to leave his home in the woods. Mandella says the city parks department is going to evict him, and the others who live in the woods, within a few weeks because of complaints from walkers and people who live nearby.Davis likely only has a few weeks left before he’s forced to leave the place he has called home for the last three years. He hopes to get a hold of his stimulus check and use it to find a place to live.He said he's hoping to find a new place to live that offers some solitude. DENVER -- Starting with the next academic year, students in a Colorado school districtwill attend classes for four days each week instead of five.For the past few months, the 27J school district — which covers portions of the Denver suburbs, including Brighton, Commerce City, Henderson and Thornton in addition to unincorporated areas of Adams, Broomfield and Weld counties — has been exploring and discussing the idea of a shorter week and on Monday, the district made it official.Students will attend classes Tuesday through Friday. Rather than extending the school year to meet state requirements for instruction time, students will be in class longer each day.For elementary schools and full-day kindergarten, school will begin at 7:50 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Middle and high schools will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:32 p.m.To address concerns from parents about child care on Mondays, the district will offer child care from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a fee of per child per day.District officials said the change is due in part to the district's difficulty competing with other districts in terms of recruiting and retaining teachers, who often leave for other districts that pay better. Officials hope a shorter work week will encourage more teachers to stay put."I realize this will be a significant change for our students, their families, and the communities we are so fortunate to serve, but our district can no longer be expected to do more with less financial resources," said 27J Superintendent Dr. Chris Fiedler. "We are 100% committed to providing our students with the necessary skills and competencies that will enable a future far beyond graduation.
