BERLIN, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Germany pledged on Tuesday to enhance their efforts in coordinating macroeconomic policies and opposing trade and investment protectionism, according to a joint communique issued after a meeting between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his German counterpart Angela Merkel.The meeting, focusing on China's relations with Germany and Europe, was held at the Meseberg Palace, 70 km north of Germany's capital of Berlin, on the eve of the 13th China-European Union (EU) summit in Brussels.China and Germany are two of the world's largest exporters. China surpassed Germany last year to become the number one exporter.The communique said both sides agreed to attach importance to a series of dialogue mechanisms, including the strategic dialogue, the dialogue between nations ruled by law and human rights dialogue.China and Germany also agreed to expand political mutual trust and deepen strategic coordination between China and Europe. BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday handed out the first group of Internet map service licenses to 31 Chinese and joint-venture operators, after authorities tightened market access amid worries that booming Internet map services might undermine state security.The 31 operators, including a national-level map publisher, several map service providers affiliated with major Chinese portals such as Baidu.com and Sina.com, and nearly a dozen state-owned local research institute or mapping bureaus, obtained a class-A license from the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.Operators who obtain a class-A license will be allowed to conduct services including map searching and locations, marking geographic information, downloading and copying of maps, and map transmissions and quotations. Class-B licenses will restrict companies to offer services of map searching and locations, as well as geographic information marking.All Internet map services providers will have to apply for a license, while those operating without the license will be prosecuted in China in accordance with the law, said an official from the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, who required anonymity.The official did not elaborate on the deadline for license applications.Foreign-owned or foreign-invested Internet firms can apply for the license in the capacity of joint ventures or through cooperation with Chinese businesses, according to the official.Nokia Alliance Internet Services Company Limited, a joint venture between Nokia and New Alliance, which is part of the Shanghai Alliance Investment Limited, is among the businesses that have obtained a class-A license.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's three-day U.N. visit this week has been fruitful as a major diplomatic effort at a time when new changes are emerging in the world economy and politics, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Friday.Wen was in New York from Tuesday to Thursday for the U.N. Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the general debate of the 65th session of the U.N. General Assembly, a summit of the U.N. Security Council member states, and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and MDGs. TOKYO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said Friday that China and Japan, the two major economic powers in Asia, need to work toward improving bilateral relations."It is true that Japan-China relations have shown signs of deterioration," Sengoku, Japan's top government spokesman, said at a press conference, adding that efforts were needed to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.The comments came as the Naha, Okinawa, prosecutor's office said Friday it will release Zhan Qixiong, the 41-year-old Chinese fishing boat captain who has been held for more than two weeks.Two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands on Spet. 7.The next day, the Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained its captain and 14 fishermen on board, drawing strong protests from the Chinese government and its people.The Japanese released the fishermen and boat last week but held the captain. China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally send back the captain to avoid additional damage to their bilateral ties.According to local media, Zhan was to leave Japan on Friday.
