SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Credit Union announced Thursday it will join with partners to collect school supplies for students experiencing homelessness.Teaming up with the San Diego County Office of Education and iHeartMedia radio stations, the annual "Stuff the Bus" school supplies campaign supports Live Well San Diego. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors launched the program in 2010 with the goal of "achieving healthy, safe and thriving communities across the region by partnering with community and city leaders, schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations and residents.""Families and youth experiencing homelessness need resources and assistance more than ever during this uncertain time," said Susie Terry, a coordinator of youth homeless services at the office of education. "This drive will allow us to lighten the load for these families in one small way. Over the past few years, we have heard from our local schools how much it means to the families to receive these supplies."Homelessness for school-age children can mean living in a shelter, sharing a residence with multiple families, living in a car or trailer in San Diego County or sharing a room in an apartment with relatives. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County had the fourth-most homeless residents in the U.S. this year, according to a report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. San Diego County's data was taken from the 2018 Point in Time Study, completed Jan. 26. The region had an official count of 8,576 homeless residents during the three-hour window in which the count took place, behind Seattle/King County in Washington, Los Angeles County and New York City, which topped the list with 78,676 homeless residents. According to the report, roughly 5,000 members of San Diego's homeless population are unsheltered, living on the street, in a vehicle or in a hand-built structure such as a tent. Another 3,500 homeless residents were sheltered at the time of the study, living in emergency shelters, safe havens and transitional housing. The county's count could be higher than 9,000 homeless residents, however, because the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless did not count residents in recreational vehicles and some residents in shelters. County officials and homeless advocates believe the actual homeless population could total as high as 9,220, but the true count has remained opaque since the task force, which oversees the Point in Time County, announced the error May 31. Overall, California leads all other states with 129,972 homeless individuals, followed by New York at 91,897. At the time the counts were completed in January, California laid claim to 24 percent of the country's total homeless population. Combined with New York, Florida, Texas and Washington, roughly half of the country's homeless population was clustered in five states. Homelessness in California has declined in recent years despite the robust total. The state's homeless population fell by 1,560, or 1.2 percent, from 2017 to 2018 and 9,014, or 6.5 percent, from 2007 to 2018. New York and Massachusetts have seen the biggest increases from 2007 to 2018, adding 29,296 and 4,941 homeless residents to their counts, respectively. 2052

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol arrested 58 people for alleged intoxicated driving in San Diego County during its annual Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period this year.CHP officers made the arrests between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Sunday in the agency's jurisdiction in the county, which includes all freeways, as well as roads in unincorporated areas.All available officers were to be deployed to catch drunk or drug- impaired drivers, speeders and other traffic violators during the enforcement period.Last year, 66 people were arrested for impaired driving in San Diego County over the Thanksgiving holiday.Statewide, the agency made 855 arrests for impaired driving during the enforcement period, down from 965 last year. And 44 traffic fatalities were reported across all California jurisdictions -- two of which were in San Diego County. Last year, California saw the exact same number of traffic deaths during Thanksgiving enforcement. 972

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The onetime head of a South Bay parent-teacher association was sentenced today to three years probation for embezzling around ,000 from the organization.Kaitlyn Faith Birchman, the former president of the Imperial Beach Charter School PTA, pleaded guilty in February to a felony forgery count. Had she gone to trial and been convicted of forgery and grand theft, she would have faced a potential three-year, eight-month prison sentence, according to the prosecution.Per the terms of her probation, Birchman will have to complete 15 public work service days and make ,000 in restitution to the PTA. If she pays the ,000, her forgery conviction will be reduced to a misdemeanor, according to prosecutors.Birchman, 30, was taken into custody in early January at her Temecula home on an arrest warrant issued in November. She cooperated with investigators, according to Sgt. Karl Miller, who said the thefts occurred over a roughly year-long period.
