SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — An attorney for a U.S. college student and her boyfriend who have been sentenced to four months in prison in the Cayman Islands for violating strict COVID-19 measures says he plans to appeal the recent ruling.Their attorney Jonathon Hughes says Skylar Mack, 18, of Georgia, and Vanjae Ramgeet, 24, of the Cayman Islands, have been in prison since Tuesday.He says he will argue for a less severe sentence next week and says the two have never been in trouble with the police.Mack is accused of breaking a mandatory two-week quarantine.Hughes told the Associated Press that on Nov. 27, Mack arrived in the Cayman Islands.But instead of undergoing a mandatory two-week quarantine, she broke quarantine by leaving with her boyfriend to attend a water sports event on Nov. 29, the AP reported.According to the AP, a judge ruled that Mack and Ramgeet pay a ,400 fine and provide 40 hours of community service. Ramgeet was also ordered to a two-month curfew, but prosecutors appealed, saying the punishment was lenient.On Dec. 15, a higher court ruled in favor of the prosecutors, and the couple was immediately imprisoned, the AP reported.Mack's grandmother told the AP that she emailed President Donald Trump and received a response saying the White House would look into it. 1309

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A 23-year-old man is behind bars after leading San Diego Sheriff's deputies on a short pursuit in a vehicle that was reported stolen.Deputies received a broadcast from Carlsbad Police of a stolen vehicle on Sunday just after 1 p.m. in the area of Palomar Airport Rd. heading toward San Marcos. Nearby deputies began searching the area and located the vehicle unoccupied in the parking lot of a Target on Business Park Dr. in Vista.While they waited for an ASTREA helicopter and canine unit, deputies set up surveillance on the vehicle. After a few minutes, the suspected driver, identified as Dylan Kidd, returned and deputies moved in toward the vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Department (SDSO).Kidd started up the vehicle and led deputies on a four- to five-minute pursuit, during which deputies say he drove recklessly out of the parking lot and onto nearby streets. Kidd eventually left the vehicle and fled into a nearby canyon, according to the department.The vehicle, however, continued and crashed into the garage door of a home on White Sands Drive, causing some minor damage.With the ASTREA helicopter above, deputies were led to Kidd's location after about six minutes and he surrendered to deputies, SDSO said. Kidd was booked into jail and charged with felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, shoplift/burglary, and hit and run. 1405
SEATTLE (AP) — Cookware and kitchen chain Sur La Table is closing 56 of its 121 stores as it seeks bankruptcy protection, the latest retail casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. The privately-held Seattle-based company says it has agreed to sell its remaining stores to affiliates of Fortress Investment Group following the bankruptcy procedure and store closures. “This sale process will result in a revitalized Sur La Table, positioned to thrive in a post-COVID-19 retail environment," CEO Jason Goldberger said in the press release. "Sur La Table will have a balance sheet and retail footprint optimized to position the Company for a bright future that continues our nearly 50-year tradition of offering high-quality cooking products and experiences to our customers.”The post-sale company will also include its in-person and online cooking classes and its e-commerce business. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The fearsome NFL pass rusher Fred Dean has died. The death of the former San Francisco 49ers star on Wednesday night was confirmed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Ex-teammate Dwight Hicks says Dean was hospitalized last week with the coronavirus and was on a ventilator. Dean was 68 years old.Dean was a key part of the launch of the 49ers' dynasty. He was an undersized pass rusher who began his career as a second-round pick with the San Diego Chargers in 1975 and ended it in the Pro Football Hall of Fame after being named an All-Pro twice and making four Pro Bowls.Dean was an All-Pro for the Chargers in 1980 but had his biggest impact after being traded to San Francisco during the 1981 season.Dean is a member of the Chargers Hall of Fame and was named to the Bolts' 40th and 50th anniversary teams. 838
