The United States is on pace to see its highest number of overdose deaths ever since record keeping began.Between October 2019 and October 2020, 74,000 overdose deaths were reported in the country, up from 68,000 during the same time period the previous year.In local municipalities, the numbers are even more staggering as many cities already surpassed their 2019 numbers through the first nine months of this year, and experts say the pandemic is only fueling the rise.The Associated Press analyzed preliminary overdose statistics in nine states across the country: Colorado, Kentucky, Texas, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Washington. All of the states showed marked increased in overdose numbers from 2019 to 2020.In Colorado, for example, overdose deaths increased by 28%. In Denver, specifically, that rise was being fueled by the opiate fentanyl, which has been trafficked more across the U.S. Mexico border during the pandemic due to its strength.According Denver’s Medical Examiner’s Office, fentanyl deaths increased tenfold between 2018 and 2020. In 2019, the city reported 56 overdoses from the drug. Through October of this year, that number has skyrocketed to 108.“Drug overdoses are exceeding every metric that we’ve seen for the last decade,” said Dr. Jim Caruso, who is the coroner for the City and County of Denver. “We have had fentanyl related deaths in individuals as young as nine years old. Kids are always tough and they’ve been tough my whole career because you’re looking at the most lost years of productive life.”Dr. Ken Leonard is the Director of the Research Institute on Addictions at the University of Buffalo and says since the start of the pandemic, overdose deaths have only increased at a faster rate, particularly among those with existing drug issues.According to the AP’s analysis, deaths in all nine states peaked in either April or May, just after the tightest stages of quarantine began.Dr. Leonard says the economic consequences of the pandemic forced many drug treatment centers to either furlough or cut employees to save money, affecting accessibility to treatment. He says the isolation from support networks during quarantine may have also played a role in the rise.“The pandemic and the isolation, for a lot of people the unemployment, it all creates a tremendous amount of stress,” said Leonard.Because it takes months to tabulate national overdose death numbers, the true extent of what is happening may not be known until next year, despite early indicators that we are already in the midst of an unprecedented drug epidemic taking place during this pandemic. 2656

The US surgeon general issued an advisory Thursday recommending that more Americans carry the opioid overdose-reversing drug, naloxone.The drug, commonly known as Narcan, can very quickly restore normal breathing in someone suspected of overdosing on opioids, including heroin and prescription pain medications.Dr. Jerome Adams emphasized that "knowing how to use naloxone and keeping it within reach can save a life." To make his point, Adams relied on a rarely used tool: the surgeon general's advisory. The Trump campaign has officially requested a recount in two Wisconsin counties, just one day after all 72 counties had reported they finished their canvassing.President Donald Trump and his campaign had a deadline of 5 p.m. Wednesday to demand a recount in the state.The Wisconsin Election Commission (WEC) said the request could be delivered to the commission in person or filed electronically, as long as it was received by 5 p.m.On Wednesday, the Trump campaign ordered a recount in both Milwaukee and Dane Counties — two of the most populous and Democratic-leaning counties in the state.The WEC added that the campaign wired million Tuesday evening.The fees for a recount vary based on where the president would like a recount. Officials say while some believe it's a service to goldfish to release them into a lake, it is a disservice to the ecosystem.Goldfish are a domesticated version of a wild carp from East Asia and were developed due to artificial selection created by humans.Simply put, goldfish are mostly for visual effect.West Medical Lake, near Spokane, Washington, is known as one of the best producing opening day trout lakes in the state, according to the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday that the 2018 Ebola outbreak in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is over.Thursday marked the 42nd day the last survivor of the virus tested negative, the CDC said in a news release. “The international effort to bring an end to Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been a true partnership between CDC, the Ministry of Health, WHO and U.S. government partners,” said CDC Director Robert Redfield, MD in the statement. “CDC will continue the important work of confronting Ebola and other global disease threats with the mission to improve the human condition."The outbreak was first declared back on August 1, 2018, in North Kivu, the World Health Organization said.Surveillance will continue for at least six months after the outbreak ends, the CDC said.The CDC said that the DRC is dealing with a fresh Ebola outbreak in the Equateur Province, which occurred back on June 1.According to the WHO, over 11,000 people died from the virus between 2014-2016 in West Africa. 1077
