SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students distracted and bitten in class at Madison Senior High in Clairemont are hoping for some help to make the mosquitoes go away. The west side of campus, against Doliva Dr., is where people told 10News they were bitten. The same area houses special needs classes. 10News was sent two pictures, one of a student, with special needs, whose calf was bitten by a mosquito, and another of a dead mosquito. It appears to be black with white spots or stripes."It was really bad and it was burning and everything," Junior Arryonna said. She was bitten in art class Thursday."I feel like my ankle starts itching so I'm like what's on my ankle, so I look and I got two bumps on the side of my ankle," she said reaching down to scratch. She said she's allergic, making the bites that much worse. The school district says the first report of a mosquito bite came mid-September, around the first time Aryonna said she was bit. Pest Control came out twice and deployed an organic compound in the drain to kill mosquito larvae. The County was scheduled to come out next week, but after 10News called, they showed up Friday afternoon, according to the district. 1176

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The beloved founder of the popular Roberto's Taco Shop chain which began in San Diego died last week, according to the company.Dolores Robledo, 90, died on July 14, the company said in a release. Robledo opened the first Roberto's Taco Shop — and San Diego's first taco shop — with her husband, Roberto, in 1964, according to the company. Prior to that, the couple started their food career providing tortillas to stores and restaurants from their San Ysidro tortilla factory."Since then, Sra. Dolores had been sharing her love for family and authenticity through each meal served," the company said in a release. "She has left the legacy of her love and perseverance. The way she touched lives will remain ongoing. Dolores Robledo will be deeply missed. Please keep her family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time."Robledo was the mother to 13 children and had 39 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. In 1990, Roberto moved to Las Vegas and soon after decided to open his first taco shop in Las Vegas. With the help of her family, Roberto's expanded to 60 locations across California and Nevada. The Roberto's chain is believed to have started the variety of other eateries with the "berto's" suffix in San Diego. It's long-rumored that the famed California Burrito was created at one of these "berto's" shops, but which shop can claim that title continues to be debated. On Instagram, the company continued: "Sra. Dolores Robledo, founder of Roberto's Taco Shop, loved cooking good Mexican food for her family and friends. She and her family expressed that passion by opening their first Roberto's Taco Shop in San Diego in 1964. She will be missed but her legacy of cooking fine Mexican dishes will continue for generations to come."Visitation services for Robledo will be held at 4 p.m. on July 29 at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita. The services will be followed by a mass and committal service on July 30. Her full obituary can be found online. 2032

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Teenage cancer survivors from Rady Chidlren's Hospital celebrated an "unforgettable" event. The annual Unforgettable Prom brought teens battling cancer out for a night of dancing and celebration — a night many of the teens miss at school while they continue to fight illness. Now in its 13th year, the dance has helped teens take a moment to celebrate that special night in every teenager's life. And everything is covered: From dresses and tuxedos to entertainment, food, and decor, thanks to volunteers and the Friends of Scott Foundation, a local non-profit that works to provide emotional and financial support for children with cancer and their families. This year's theme, Avengers "Age of Heroes," honors Ryan Wilcox, a former patient and Unforgettable Prom King, who lost hist battle with cancer. "Unforgettable Prom" was started by Carmen Delgadillo, founder of the Friends of Scott Foundation. Degadillo lost her teenage son, Scott, to Acute Lymphostic Leukemia. From that loss, Delgadillo started the foundation to help other families in need of support during their own battles with cancer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is moving forward with a plan to underground utilities in eight neighborhoods throughout the city. In a meeting Monday, San Diego’s City Council voted to establish underground utility districts. The district's would include the neighborhoods of Otay Mesa-Nestor, San Ysidro, Clairemont Mesa, Encanto, Southeastern/ Skyline-Paradise Hills, College Area, Navajo, and Mid-City: Eastern Area. So far, the City of San Diego has moved roughly 400 miles of utilities underground. RELATED: SDG&E moves 20 miles of power lines undergroundAlthough Monday's meeting marked the first step in the process, the city says construction won’t begin for several more years. In total, the project is estimated to cost more than .2 million, including .5 million for the electrical utility work and .7 for related work, including administration, streetlight replacement, street resurfacing and related work. Recently, the city increased staff to accommodate more undergrounding districts and increase customer service. The funds come from a surcharge customers pay through SDG&E and an electric tariff known as Rule 20A. The map below shows all the undergrounding projects in the City of San Diego.
