SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An 18-year-old San Diego student who has already cemented her place in climbing has now grabbed a historic Olympic accolade.Sunday, Brooke Raboutou, of Boulder, Colo., qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Games to become the first-ever American to qualify for Olympic climbing, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee. The University of San Diego sophomore finished ninth in the combined qualification round at the IFSC Climbing World Championships in Hachioji, Japan, according to Team USA. Her final rank will be based on the results from all three events.U.S. athletes will have two more chances to qualify for the 2020 team. The Tokyo games will take a maximum of two qualifying athletes from each country, featuring 20 athletes per gender.Raboutou has been competing from a young age, beginning her climbing career when she was 7 years old, according to Team USA. At 11, she became the youngest person in the world to complete a 5.14b-grade climb. She is also 2018's lead youth world champion, 2016 combined youth world champion, and 2017's combined youth Pan American champion. Raboutou skills come across as a genetic trait, as her parents were each multiple-time climbing world cup champions and her older brother is also an accomplished climber. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego woman has been reunited with her four-legged soulmate after he was stolen and sold on Craigslist.Kameroun Mares bought her dog Semper Fidelis after her battle with leukemia.“Yes, it’s the Marine Corps motto, but in Latin, it translates to 'Always Faithful,'" said Mares. “He is always faithful to me.”After a few years together the two moved to Florida for what Mares thought would be a fresh start.RELATED: Slow-moving search for owner of El Cajon tortoiseHowever, it turned out to be the start of a nightmare. While on a trip back to California for a medical appointment her roommate said Semper had run away.“I had so many nightmares of what, where is he? Why did I not get a phone call? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A similar Observation Wheel to those in England and Paris could come to Balboa Park for a short term stay.The Cohn Restaurant Group and Sky Views of America presented the idea of the Balboa Park Star to the Balboa Park Committee Meeting on October 1.They hope the wheel would attract more visitors and re-energize the park."We have operated these observation wheels during the pandemic," Vice President of Sky Views of America Ben Pickett said.The gondolas are enclosed and climate controlled. According to the presentation, they are sanitized after each ride and safety protocols comply with state, local and CDC guidelines. Masks would be required for passengers and staff. The presentation was met with excitement by the committee."I love the fact it is innovative and outside the box," Committee Member Victoria Curran said. "This is a terrific idea, I love it!" Committee Member Johanna Schiavoni added."Sometimes it's the craziest ideas that are the best ones," Committee Member Micah Parzen said. Peter Bolland is the Chair of the Philosophy and Humanities Department at Southwestern College. He’s been at the school for 30 years and during that time taught Ammar Campa-Najjar, who is the person who selected him to become an elector.California gets 55 electors because of the 53 congressional districts and two senators. Electors are chosen by the party’s nominee who won the popular vote. Campa-Najjar got the most votes for Congress’ 50th District primary election in 2020, making him the person to choose the elector. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A simple gesture of kindness can make someone’s day or even save a life. “This one is Detecting Divas.” It all began with a book club. “That one is sisters of sleuth.”That Evie Arnold began hosting for seniors over a decade ago. “It’s all mysteries.”The women are all over 60.“There are so may single women that don’t have anybody, that I decided they should email me every day or text me every day just so I know everybody is ok.”But a couple of months ago, one of those emails didn’t come in.“I was making the change from landline to smartphone, but there was a glitch, I was without a telephone, deathy ill with no one to contact anybody.”Bookclub member Susan Lipp laid in her bed with no food, no water, just fear.“When you’re alone and you live alone with no family, I lay there and I thought after a couple days or so, I’m not going to get out of this. And I hope someone takes care of my kitties.”Evie called for a wellness check, and Susan was rushed to the hospital with a critical gastrointestinal condition.“She literally saved my life.”“It feels good to know that I’m 73 years old and I can still do good, be useful.”But that wasn’t the first time her compassion saved a life.When one neighbor's newspapers began stacking up, she knocked on the door only to hear the dogs barking and called for another welfare check.“I ran into her kids in the front yard and talked about time. I called the police on her, and they said you saved her life!”She urges everyone to pay attention to their neighbors, especially seniors.“Most police departments have volunteers that will take a look, and you might end up saving someone’s life too.”Susan believes everyone should join a book club.
