BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid in Beijing Monday and called for closer relations between the two nations and the two parliaments.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said the growth of bilateral relations in recent years had yielded substantial benefits for the two peoples.Wu said China valued ties with the Maldives and was willing to maintain friendly exchanges and cooperation at all levels in an effort to expand political mutual trust and economic and trade cooperation in fields such as fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure construction.China would encourage Chinese companies to further participate in the Maldives' national construction and more Chinese tourists to visit the country, Wu said.Wu voiced his hope for stronger coordination between the two nations on international issues in order to build a relationship that would be a model for relations between big and small nations.Wu suggested the two legislatures promote dialogue and exchanges of views among members on successful experiences of national construction so as to inject new vitality to the development of bilateral relations.Shahid, speaker of the Maldivian People's Majlis, said the Maldivian people treasured the friendship of the Chinese people, and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy offered inspiration to developing countries, including the Maldives.Shahid pledged the Maldivian parliament would continue to play a constructive role in promoting bilateral relations.Shahid is leading a Maldivian parliamentary delegation to China at the invitation of Wu. TAIPEI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- On the eve of Taiwan's mayoral and city councilor elections, Sean Lien, son of Lien Chan, honorary chairman of Kuomintang (KMT) party, was reportedly shot in the face when he was campaigning for a KMT candidate in Taipei County Friday evening.He was being treated at a local hospital. Local media cited doctors as saying Sean Lien's brain was not injured and his injury would not endanger his life.A spokeswoman of the hospital where Sean Lien was treated said he was sober-minded when he was sent to the hospital. BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- With the New Year and China's Spring Festival approaching, China will improve efforts to stabilize prices and ensure abundant supply of essential commodities, according to an official circular issued Sunday.Cracking down on price speculation and related market manipulation should be high on agenda of governments at all levels, according to the circular issued jointly by the General Offices of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council, or China's Cabinet.The circular also urged for improved supervision on the food and medicine market and demanded work concerning water, power, oil, gas and heating supplies to be handled well.It called on related departments to distribute subsidies for low-income groups in a timely way and make arrangements to help people, especially those in disasters-hit areas, to get through the winter with enough supply of necessities.Party and governmental organs should abstain from extravagance and embezzlement of public fund must be strictly prohibited, it said, ordering discipline inspection authorities, auditing agencies and finance departments to enhance supervision.According to the circular, special inspection campaigns will be launched in sectors, including mining, transportation, construction, and fireworks manufacturing, to tighten safety measures and prevent accidents.Stressing security in passenger transportation, the circular said cargo overloading, using fatigued operators or running unlicensed transportation operations are prohibited.It further called for efforts to safeguard social order and to combat violent and mafia-style crimes, property embezzlement and economic crimes.
