The city is in the first phase of its Downtown San Diego Mobility Plan. They are hoping to have at least 6 percent of commuters riding their bikes by the end of the project. Jamie Hampton has been riding her bike to work for over ten years. At times, she says she hasn’t felt safe around moving cars. “It’s challenging because you have to kind of figure out how to share a lane with a car.”The city is making it easier for riders to get around the Downtown area with protected bike lanes. White reflector poles separate the lanes. Some have another layer of protection with street parking spaces. There are also designated signal lights for cyclists. The City Council adopted the estimated million mobility plan in 2016. He put the decision on hold until Friday to give U.S. officials the chance to appeal.The launch of the policy in January in San Diego at the nation's busiest border crossing marked an unprecedented change to the U.S. asylum system, government officials and asylum experts said. Families seeking asylum typically had been released in the U.S. with notices to appear in court.President Donald Trump's administration says the policy responds to a crisis at the southern border that has overwhelmed the ability of immigration officials to detain migrants. Growing numbers of families are fleeing poverty and gang violence in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.The lawsuit on behalf of 11 asylum seekers from Central America and legal advocacy groups says the Trump administration is violating U.S. law by failing to adequately evaluate the dangers that migrants face in Mexico.It also accuses Homeland Security and immigration officials of depriving migrants of their right to apply for asylum by making it difficult or impossible for them to do so.Under the new policy, asylum seekers are not guaranteed interpreters or lawyers and don't get to argue to a judge that they face the potential of persecution or torture if they are sent back to Mexico, Judy Rabinovitz, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, said at a March court hearing.Seeborg appeared skeptical of the lawsuit's argument that the administration misapplied a U.S. law that allows the return of immigrants to Mexico. Wednesday, community leaders and elected officials announced the creation of a new regional task force to tackle the root causes of the inequities.The coronavirus did not create society's inequities."But it has definitely exasperated them, and it has highlighted them," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.That is why community leaders announced the creation of the new Regional COVID-19 Task Force for Equitable Recovery. They will work with elected officials to tackle the underlying problems that lead to inequities such as job, food, healthcare, and economic losses, felt by many San Diegans of color."You are valued," National City mayor, Alejandra Sotelo Solis, said in the Zoom announcement. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- While most beaches in San Diego County are entirely closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Coronado, Torrey Pines, and Oceanside do not have hard-closures. However, most of the visitors at the still-open beaches were doing their part in maintaining proper social distance. Get out and stretch out. Many people found one of the rare places in San Diego County to do so: Coronado Beach. "All the gyms, and everywhere you can get a little exercise, are closed," Manhattan Beach resident, Ryan Darling said. "I actually came out just to stretch my legs a little bit and get out of the house to do some lunges." Darling is visiting a friend in Coronado. He was worried the beach here would be packed. But many are finding it to be pretty mellow. "It's just as nice to see that it's not crazy on this nice, beautiful Saturday," Coronado resident, Brenda Byrnes said. Coronado Lifeguards periodically make announcements over the loudspeakers to take enforcement to the next level. "We're trying as hard as we can to keep the beach open. So we ask that you guys remain in motion," lifeguards said. If they see anyone loitering, sunbathing, or quietly sitting on the sand, they tell them to get a move on.
