For years, Toys "R" Us was an American success story.Now the discount toy retailer is in its final chapter. The company filed for bankruptcy in September. On Wednesday, Toys "R" Us told employees that it would close or sell all its stores in the United States.It's an ignominious end for the company that was once the toy industry's powerhouse. In the second half of the 20th century, just after the Baby Boom, Toys "R" Us grew into a dominant retail chain thanks to its low prices and a knack for keeping the nation's hottest toys in stock."Toys 'R' Us, Big Kid on the Block, Won't Stop Growing," a Wall Street Journal headline blared in 1988.It all started in 1948, when Charles Lazarus, age 25, opened a baby furniture store called Children's Bargain Town in Washington, D.C. He knew Americans returning from World War II were starting families and needed somewhere to stock up on nursery decor.But before long, Lazarus discovered that the real money was not in cribs, but in toys.Toys break, or go out of fashion — which means parents need to go to the store more often, Toys "R" Us explains in its online company history.In 1957, Lazarus opened his first store stocked only with toys. It was modeled after a supermarket, with items stocked high on shelves and a wide assortment of choices. He named it Toys "R" Us — with a backwards "R" in the logo that was supposed to look it it was drawn by a kid.The mainstays of the iconic Toys "R" Us marketing campaigns emerged over the next two decade. Dr. G. Raffe, which had been used to advertise Children's Bargain Town, became "Geoffrey."In a Washington Post ad from 1970, an eager Geoffrey touted "super giraffic selections" inside "super giraffic stores!" Geoffrey made his first TV appearance in 1973. The "I don't want to grow up" jingle made its debut in the early 1980s.In the meantime, Toys "R" Us was booming.The company went public in 1978 after the bankruptcy of onetime parent Interstate Stores. It quickly became a Wall Street favorite. In 1980, the Los Angeles Times called Toys 'R' Us "one of the New York Stock Exchange's hottest stocks.""What we are is a supermarket for toys," Lazarus told the Washington Post in 1981. "We don't have a competitor in variety. There is none."The Washington Post story favorably compared Toys "R" Us to another American giant: McDonald's."Like McDonald's, with its regimented service and standardized burgers and fries, Toys 'R' Us has become an American institution," the article said.Toys 'R' Us was also known in the corporate world for its sophisticated use of computers."One thing that sets the Toys 'R' Us operation apart is that Mr. Lazarus knows precisely what his customers are buying," a 1985 Wall Street Journal article said. "Each product is tracked by computer, and that helps the chain spot hot-selling items weeks before most competitors do."Lazarus also kept his stores stocked with a variety of baby products, like diapers and formula, so shoppers would have a reason to shop year-round.Things started to go awry in the 1990s. In 1994, Lazarus stepped down as CEO. But the biggest change came when Walmart started offering lower prices on diapers, according to toy industry analyst Jim Silver.While Toys "R" Us remained a destination during the holidays, it lost regular shoppers during the rest of the year."That changed everything," Silver said.In 2001, Toys "R" Us opened a flagship store in Times Square, complete with a 60-foot Ferris wheel and a life-size Barbie dollhouse, in order to juice enthusiasm. But the costs were "astronomical," Silver said.On shaky ground, Toys "R" Us was taken private by a group of private equity firms in 2005. Bain Capital, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Vornado Realty Trust bought the company for .6 billion.Saddled with debt, the store was not able to pour enough money into necessary, innovative changes. By the time Amazon ruled the online shopping ecosystem, Toys "R" Us was lightyears behind — despite an early partnership with Amazon in 2000. The agreement to jointly sell toys online ultimately went sour and ended after a court fight."Walmart had a better online experience. Target had a better online experience," Silver said. "They lost online and they didn't adapt."In 2015, Toys "R" Us closed its Times Square mega-store. It was the beginning of the end.A dismal 2017 holiday season was the death knell. Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb said Monday that he does not believe the ongoing special counsel probe led by Robert Mueller is a "witch hunt."The comment puts him at odds with his former boss, President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly called the probe into possible ties between his campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election a "witch hunt."Cobb, speaking with CNN's Gloria Borger at the day-long CITIZEN Conference in New York, took a markedly different position."I don't think it's a witch hunt," he said.The comment came during a panel with Jack Quinn, a former White House lawyer under President Bill Clinton.Later, Cobb lauded Mueller, the former head of the FBI and a Vietnam War veteran."Bob Mueller is an American hero in my view," Cobb said, noting his service as a Marine."He was a very serious prosecutor," Cobb said. "He and I first met in the mid '80s when we were prosecuting different places and I have respected him throughout."Cobb left the White House earlier this year after months of working on the administration's response to the Mueller investigation."I've done what I came to do in terms of managing the White House response to the special counsel requests," Cobb said. FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Lehigh Acres, Florida man is facing two counts of child neglect after police say he left two young children alone in a vehicle while he went into a strip club.23-year-old Willie Lee Jordan, Jr. was arrested Thursday night outside of Scarlett's Cabaret in Fort Myers.According to Fort Myers Police, the children were found crying in the back seat of an SUV by a citizen around 11 p.m.  Police were called to the scene, and arrived to find the citizen, two security personnel, and the children outside the vehicle.The SUV 's windows were open about two inches while the children were alone inside.  The good Samaritans were able to instruct the older child to unlock the doors to get out.Staff inside the club made an announcement in an effort to locate the caretaker of the children. That's when Jordan exited the club and was greeted by police.Jordan told officers that he was only inside for one minute, but police had already been on scene for several minutes by that point.Club staff told police Jordan had been at the club earlier that evening but was turned away for a dress code violation. He later returned properly dressed, and was inside the club for about 20 minutes without checking on the children.Jordan was arrested and released Friday on ,000 bond. 1321

FREDERICK, Colo. — When Chris Watts murdered his wife, his two daughters and unborn child in August 2018, it captured headlines around the world.Two years later, the Watts home still sits vacant.Driving by, it looks like the all-American home — two stories, five bedrooms and more than 4,000 square feet in the cookie-cutter suburbs of northern Colorado. But when buyers realize what happened inside, everything changes."There's no mystery about what happened there. The neighborhood knows what happened there. Potential buyers know what happened there," Denver-based bankruptcy attorney Clark Dray said.Chris Watts strangled his wife, Shanann, inside their home after an early-morning fight. Watts told her he was having an affair with a co-worker and wanted out of the marriage. That same morning, Watts smothered his two daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. He then tried to cover up the murders by placing his wife's body in a shallow grave and his daughters in crude oil tanks on the property where Chris worked.As Watts lied to investigators, he also went before news cameras begging for his family to return. He later confessed to police after failing a polygraph test.Watts is now serving multiple life sentences in prison.Interest in the murder homeThe fate of 2825 Saratoga Trail, where the family lived, currently sits in legal limbo."It's a beautiful home. I would hate to see them just take it down," said a next-door neighbor who asked not to be identified.Neighbors are scarred by what happened. In fact, all the neighbors interviewed said they did not want to be identified. They all said they didn't want to bring any more attention to themselves or the neighborhood."For the neighborhood, it's just kind of difficult," the next-door neighbor said.She said a recent Netflix documentary about the murders — "American Murder: The Family Next Door" — has spurred new interest in the home, and not the kind anyone in the neighborhood wants."Literally hundreds of cars have come by. They're curious; they've been coming from out of state," the next-door neighbor said.The area has seen so much activity since the documentary aired that neighbors put up "no trespassing" signs out front of the Watts house and are urging people not to leave any more memorials on the front porch."I totally understand everyone's interest in the home. I just would ask that people just be respectful because you are coming into the neighborhood of, you know, other people that live here," the next-door neighbor said.She said cars speed in out of the neighborhood to see the home often, and she worries about the safety of children playing."People come late at night," she said.Home is deterioratingCurrently, the grass outside the Watts house is dead, and vacancy notes are plastered to the door.Around back, memories of the family home are frozen in time. The girls' swing set blows in the wind, and a stuffed animal lies in the grass."There's a fascination with it," said the next-door neighbor."It would be a great home for a traditional family," Dray said.But Dray, the Denver-based bankruptcy attorney, said it's very difficult for a buyer to overcome the stigma associated with the home."At this point in time, there's no financial incentive to anyone involved to pursue this home," he said.Shortly after the murders, the lender that owns the mortgage foreclosed on it and put the house up for auction. But nobody wanted it, so Weld County took it out of foreclosure."It's a strategic decision that the bank has made — 'this doesn't have to be our problem. We're OK not getting paid on this property for the foreseeable future,'" Dray said.Real estate appraiser says price is 'way too high'The couple bought the home brand new for 9,954 in 2013, and according to Zillow, it's now valued at close to 0,000. Real estate appraiser Orell Anderson said the price is way off-base."It's way too high — as if this never occurred," he said. "I think that the property has been mismanaged."Anderson said for the home to sell, it needs to be discounted heavily. He believes they should cut the price by at least 40%."You see a pattern that tells you that when there are children involved in the murder, the discounts go higher," Anderson said.On top of that, Anderson said the seller needs to make the house look different. He suggests repainting it, changing the addresses or adding new plants — anything to wipe away the memories that are kept alive through photographs and videos of the home in the media."That's been exacerbated because it's been vacant for so long," he said.Several creditors have also placed liens on the home; the largest is from Shanann's parents. They placed a million dollar lien on the house after they won a wrongful death suit against Watts."That would make it very difficult to sell the home at a reasonable price," Dray said.He said for a sale to make sense, a potential buyer would have to make a deal with the lien holders and have enough money to cover the original mortgage.Neighbors have mixed opinions on what should happenMichelle Pate lives near the Watts home and says she would like to see it torn down."Who would want to start their life in that house?" she said.
