AUSTIN, Texas -- Valarie Allman has been throwing discus for 10 years.“When you throw a discus it takes about two seconds, and it’s a combination of power, of grace, of strength… I like to think of it as a dance still," Allman said.She started sophomore year of high school. But it’s her dance background that she credits for her quick progression in the sport.“I had a weird knack for it," Allman said. "I think all those years of learning choreography and spinning and doing pirouettes weirdly carried over to the discus, and it kind of just seemed like a good fit right from the start.”Multiple days every week, she trains hard in the gym guided by her coach Zebulon Sion.“I’m responsible for every facet of her training," Sion said. "So that includes the strength-training concepts, if we do any type of running, fitness oriented things, plyometrics, and then of course the actual throwing.”Their chemistry is undeniable.At only 25 years old, Allman is considered a pro athlete. Her rigorous training is fueled by her desire to be a part of the next Olympics.“When I graduated college, I think that was the motivation to keep training. I missed the team in 2016 by three feet and it was kind of in that moment that I realized that I really wanted to try again,” Allman said.Consistency, discipline, attention to detail. Allman’s focus didn’t falter until she found out the 2020 Olympics had to be postponed.“It was pretty heartbreaking," Allman said. "I mean, to feel like you’ve put in so much to be prepared for it and to be healthy and to do everything right to feel like you’d have a chance to make the team and then for it to be postponed I think it kind of just made me question everything.”“Her motivation to throw kind of was gone a bit for her for a while," Sion said. "And then we kind of got to a point after a month, month-and-a-half of training going well in terms of lifting and training -- our goal was to get fit, get strong and refine the technical model that she has to get to a point where we could be at our best if that opportunity would come.”That opportunity did come. On August 1st in Rathdrum, Idaho, Allman beat the Women's Discus American Record.“I threw 70 meters and 15 centimeters, and the previous record was 69 meters and 17 centimeters.”The three-foot difference that kept her from qualifying for the Olympics in 2016 is the difference she surpassed to become the first and only American woman to throw past 70 meters.“When you’re throwing that type of distance, three feet is significant. So to break it by almost three feet was huge actually,” Sion said.“When they measured the throw and they read out the numbers and it started with a seven I instantly burst into tears. I was absolutely shocked,” Allman said.Allman says 70 meters is the ultimate barrier. In the past 20 years, only two other women in the world have thrown past 70 meters.“Now looking back it’s wild the think it was just a sliver of a difference of giving up when we were on the brink of something incredible,” Allman said.“We could have called it we could have said 2020 is a bust ya know let’s move on," Sion said. "But the amount of time, energy, effort all the things to put in over five months of uncertainty and then for that to happen – I don’t know if I could be more proud.”The same day of her record-breaking throw was the exact day she would have been competing in Tokyo had the Olympics continued. However, with her dedication to improvement, Sion believes there’s a great future ahead of Allman.“I mean I think the goal is just to throw farther and to keep throwing far more often. AURORA, Colo. — Amid renewed calls for justice, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis announced Wednesday that he is looking into what his office can do to respond to the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died following an interaction with Aurora police last August.“I am hearing from many Coloradans who have expressed concerns with the investigation of Elijah McClain’s death. As a result, I have instructed my legal council [sic] to examine what the state can do and we are assessing next steps,” Polis said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.Over the past couple of weeks, interest in the case has grown both locally and nationally. People from Colorado State Rep. Leslie Herod to U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Ellen Degeneres and Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, have made calls for justice in the case and a renewed investigation into what happened that night and if officers should face punishment. The call came after the letter from the Public Safety, Court, and Civil Service Policy Committee. A release from the city said that the committee will bring the proposal forward to the full council at the July 6 meeting."We need to bring closure to this tragic incident by making sure every aspect of it is thoroughly investigated," Coffman said in a statement."Trust is already eroded—delaying action will only cause further strain in our community," said Allison Hiltz, the chair of the Public Safety, Court, and Civil Service Policy Committee.The independent investigation has been fraught with controversy since many council members felt the original outside probe, led by a Connecticut-based attorney with ties to law enforcement, was not independent enough. That contract was terminated June 10 and Mayor Mike Coffman said in a tweet that “another individual will be selected by the Mayor and the City Council.”Calls for an independent and external review in McClain’s August 2019 death have been ongoing since it happened, and the officers involved in his death did not face criminal charges and were found not to have violated department policies. The city has since changed department policies directly in the wake of McClain's death after calls for further investigation.McClain suffered a heart attack on the way to a hospital after the Aug. 24 incident, which happened in the 1900 block of Billings Street. Officers had responded to a call about a suspicious man wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. When they arrived, they contacted McClain, who they claimed resisted when the officers tried to detain him, police said.A struggle ensued, and a responding officer requested that a paramedic give McClain a dose of ketamine "due to the level of physical force applied while restraining the subject and his agitated mental state," officials said.But in the department's review of the incident earlier this year, the board found that the officers "had a lawful reason to contact Mr. McClain."The board also found that the force applied by officers — which included a carotid control hold — during the incident was "within policy and consistent with training."The carotid hold has since been banned by the department.The Adams County Coroner conducted the autopsy on McClain and ruled that the manner of his death was "undetermined," saying it could not determine whether his death was an accident, due to natural causes or a homicide.District Attorney Dave Young said Wednesday his office received more than 1,700 voicemails on Tuesday alone about the McClain case.He says he has to make a decision based on evidence and that a jury would find compelling beyond a reasonable doubt.“Understand that my role is limited to determine whether or not a criminal violation occurred. I am not indicating that the actions of the police department were appropriate. That's the role of the Aurora Police Department,” Young said.KMGH confirmed Wednesday the officers involved are all still currently employed by the Aurora Police Department.Young says the attacks have gotten personal and are overwhelming his office from doing their job of serving victims of crime.He encourages those sending emails to read his decision. AVENAL, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an inmate at a central California prison died of complications from the coronavirus Saturday, becoming the state’s 79th person to have a fatal case of COVID-19 while they were incarcerated. The Avenal State Prison inmate died at a hospital. The prisoner’s name was not released. There have been 15,872 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state prison system. Advocates say jails and prisons nationwide are prime locations for the virus to spread between inmates and staff. Officials have released hundreds of inmates to decrease jail and prison populations across the country during the pandemic. 648

ATLANTA (AP) — A representative for Tyler Perry says the filmmaker and actor offered to pay the funeral expenses for an 8-year-old girl who was fatally shot in Atlanta. Secoriea Turner was shot while riding in a Jeep Cherokee with her mother and another adult on Saturday night. The shooting occurred near a fast-food restaurant where a Black man, Rayshard Brooks, was killed by a white police officer on June 12. The Wendy's restaurant was later burned, and the area has seen frequent demonstrations against police brutality since. Perry paid for Brooks' funeral last month. BALBOA PARK, Calif (KGTV) - A sign near Christmas nativity displays at Balboa Park is causing some stir. It says that religion is a myth and that heaven, hell, angels, devils and gods do not exist.The Freedom From Religion Foundation put up the sign earlier this month. It's one of several similar displays they placed around the country during the holiday season.A statement from the group says they put the displays together to, "celebrate free-thought and to ensure representation of the growing number of secular Americans."The FFRF says they went through the legal permitting process with the city to put the sign in place. Members say it's about freedom of speech and the separation of church and state, not a war on Christmas."If the city is going to allow space for free expression, it has to allow space for free expression for everyone," says Steve Trunk, an FFRF member in San Diego.In addition to the sign, the group put up a small "nativity" scene of their own. It features America's Founding Fathers and the Statue of Liberty looking down at a "baby" Bill of Rights. The group says it's part of their holiday celebration, honoring the day when the Bill of Rights was adopted, December 15, 1971."That's our holiday," says Trunk,But some people in the park say it's the wrong way to send a message of freedom."It's a little bit on the selfish side," says Diane Sherwood, a University Heights resident who walks through the park and enjoys seeing the Christmas decorations. "If they don't want to come here and see all these things, they certainly don't have to. But to come here and object to them when other people enjoy it isn't right.""This doesn't speak to our shared humanity," says Jamie Edmonds, who lives in San Diego.
