LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Extreme heat remains a top concern for the Southern Nevada Health District. With more than 100 heat-related deaths reported last year, volunteers and health coordinators spent Friday and Saturday surveying Clark County residents on how they were affected by the summer heat.The efforts are part of a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response technique.Jeff Quin, the senior public health preparedness planner at SNHD, says heat exhaustion remains a priority. "We had 123 deaths in 2017 that were heat related and 40 percent of those occurred during the month of July," he said. The summer's sweltering temperatures affect those at home and on the streets. "It's not unique to anyone. Our access and function need population which includes the homeless is a high concern but also children, and our senior Americans," said Quinn.Volunteers Jorge and Rebecca are out surveying the southeast side of Las Vegas. They are hoping residents will fill out a 21-question survey."Mostly we are asking some basic information: do they have water and food for at least three days, where they would go for a cooling station," said Rebecca. "Then we are going to get the results and it's going to inform everybody in the community," said Jorge.Clark County resident Timothy Martin was once vulnerable to the valley's hot weather."After I had that heatstroke, [the doctor] told me, I can't go out, ‘you're going to get nauseous and dizzy,’ and I do. I have to stay indoors when it's hot."The Health District hopes the information they collect will help residents stay cool by developing better emergency response plans. 1681

LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) -- People on social media are outraged after video shows a security guard questioning a mother's immigration status in a Target parking lot. The woman who recorded and posted the video, Sonia Serrano Zavala, says the guard was asking the mother if she is here legally when she started recording. The unidentified security guard can be heard in the video saying, "You’re illegally here and you’re having babies and you’re probably on welfare."The woman, seen holding a baby in the parking lot, was reportedly asking for money. Midway through the video, the security guard says "it's a scam" and claims the woman has a car and a condo.As of Sunday afternoon, the video received more than 600,000 views. The incident took place at a Target located in the Marketplace at the Grove Shopping Center near San Deigo. WARNING: The video below contains graphic language.  936

Last month, the Harvard Global Health Institute released an interactive map that shows the risk of contracting the coronavirus based on daily new cases per 100,000 people. At the time, three states were in the red. As of Thursday, that number has since increased to 10.According to Harvard, the 10 states represent ones that should consider full stay-at-home orders, while an additional 22 should consider them.The map has four colors – green, yellow, orange and red – to demonstrate the risk by county and state. The map shows 10 states – Louisiana, Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, Nevada, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina – in the red for where infections are high.Just one state – Vermont—is in the green.According to Harvard Global Health Institute, when areas are shaded red, stay-at-home orders become necessary.On Thursday, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation concurred that a number of states should consider stay-at-home orders. The organization’s director Dr. Christopher Murray said that states should consider closing non-essential businesses when the daily death rate reaches eight per 1 million people. LINCOLN PARK (KGTV) - For the first time, a member of the drill team at Lincoln High School recalls the moments she was called the N-word at Friday night's football game in San Clemente. Lillian Mixon is a sophomore at Lincoln High School and she tells 10News, "A group of us were walking to the bathroom during halftime and a little boy asked me if I do flag or twirl, and I told him no, I dance, I do drill, and he responded with the N-word." Mixon says it happened again on her way back from the restroom, "I was confused and I was like did she say the N-word to me because this is a grown woman." Immediately, Mixon says, she told two security guards at the game about what happened, "I told the security guard that they were saying racial things to us and the guy looked at me and didn’t respond he just looked and turned away." Meanwhile, Orange County Sheriffs Department released a statement on social media that reads in part, "At the game an individual told deputies that the San Clemente Middle School students were on the visitor side being rowdy and obnoxious and deputies removed them from the area." They went on to say there was no mention of inappropriate language or hate speech. After the game, following normal protocal, Lincoln High athletes and coaches were escorted back to their buses. Mixon says when she got back to the bus she felt awful, "I felt awful after the game and I had to keep it together. After the game I told myself things like this happen but they never happen to me." LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A wellness center in La Mesa is accused of misleading patients by illegally marketing a breast cancer screening device, according to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).This week, the FDA issued a formal warning to Total Thermal Imaging Inc. and its president and co-owner, Linda Hayes, for illegally marketing and distributing an unapproved thermography device as a sole screening device for breast cancer and other diseases, according to a press release.Thermography is heat-sensitive imaging depicted in variations of color.10News spoke to San Diego's Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness organization, which says thermography alone is not enough. “It can be used in addition to a mammogram or other screening tool that has been shown effective but there hasn't been any scientific evidence for thermography right now being a standalone tool,” says Lizzie Wittig, Director of Mission Initiatives and Public Policy.The FDA is demanding a response within 15 working days.No one at the clinic answered the door. 10News called and sent messages, and got this text reply: "Total Thermal Imaging Inc. is reviewing the warning letter from the FDA and developing a response. We will work with the agency to ensure our products comply with acceptable regulations." This isn't the first time that a clinic has gotten a warning letter about thermography. Five other clinics around the country have gotten in trouble with the FDA in recent years. 1478
