SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days before the sale of a Del Cerro home was scheduled to close, thieves went on a shopping spree inside the house. In the 5600 block of Genoa Drive, neighbors were jolted by something unexpected."It's shocking because things like that don't happen in our neighborhood," said Diane Cozey. On Wednesday morning, at a three-bedroom, three-bath home that was well into escrow, a disturbing discovery was made by the staging company arriving to collect their inventory. The front door had been left ajar. "Just dismayed that someone could do something like this," said homeowner Randy Arciniega.Arciniega says his home was raided. The furniture, installed lighting, and rugs remained, but just about everything else was gone: towels, pillows, blankets, artwork, lamps, plants and other decor. Also missing was the refrigerator."The only thing that bothered me more is so much destruction happened," said Arciniega.Arcieniega says his beautiful floors were carved up as the burglars dragged the fridge out of the home. The total loss? About ,500.He tells 10News the lockbox was attached to some PVC piping, which was found damaged. The thieves apparently yanked it off the lockbox and somehow got inside it to use the key. Arcieniega says the biggest mistake he made was shutting down the alarm, because so many people were going in and out of the home. He believes the thieves were likely headed back for the rest of the inventory. The washer had been moved from the laundry room to the garage. The break-in happened sometimes between Saturday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Arciniega covered the costs of the refrigerator and floor damage. The sale of the home is expected to close Monday. 1716

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As President Trump toured the Otay Mesa border during a fundraising visit to San Diego Wednesday, he briefly touched on homelessness across California.During his tour, the President was asked about homelessness in California following recent news that his administration was looking at ways to address the state crisis. He pointed specifically to San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.RELATED: San Diego advocates want more from President Trump's homeless plan"And in the case of San Diego the mayor's doing the right thing, he's doing a good job. In the case of Los Angeles, it's a disaster. If you look at San Francisco, it's a total disaster, what's happening," President Trump told a pool of reporters. "They're going to ruin those cities. We're going to get involved soon on a federal basis if they can't clean up their act."In San Diego's case, several options have been used to address local homelessness in recent months:The city opened Bridge Shelters and is set to open its fourth location this month; Parking lots where people living in cars can sleep for free;Storage lockers for homeless people to store their belongings, with a third facility being proposed;City funded program, Wheels of Change, to employ homeless people to clean up streets;Still, according to a Point-In-Time Count by the Regional Task Force on Homeless, there are a little more than 8,000 homeless individuals in San Diego County. That number splits into 4,476 unsheltered people and 3,626 classified as sheltered in the county.Members of the Trump Administration visited Los Angeles this month to tour the city's homeless encampments. The President's staff is expect to develop policy options to address the major issue.RELATED: San Diego nonprofit hopes to house homeless in emergency sleeping cabinsGov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials also sent a letter to the President requesting 50,000 housing vouchers and to increase the value of those vouchers to account for high rent. The letter said the vouchers would help "a significant proportion of our unsheltered population," including thousands of military veterans. The President's full comments on the issue were as follows: 2200

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight. You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville. The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park. One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate. They have family activities planned, including a special documentary screening. For more details on the party, click here. 1820

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the heat wave continues, San Diego families are doing their best to seek out ways to stay cool. Antonia Maryna Gomez is a mom of two in Chula Vista and said it’s been hard to find ways to stay entertained and cool while also remembering social distancing. She’s taken her three-year-old to the pool, visited splash pads, played with water balloons and tried the beach, but she said the crowds were too large for her comfort at the beach. It’s also been difficult to keep her excited son away from other people.RELATED: Flex Alert issued for California, SDG&E lists possible neighborhoods impacted“It’s hard especially because he’s a very social kid, he loves talking to people but it’s hard to tell your kid what it’s like six feet apart,” she said.Another option to find relief in her area is cooling centers. A cooling center is open at the old Sears at the mall in Chula Vista on Broadway. This facility is typically open Monday through Friday, but did open up the weekend of Aug. 15 because of the excessive heat. Tony Ramos works for the City of Chula Vista and said they’ve been able to provide resources that are hard to find because of the pandemic.“We show movies, we also have wifi access which is very important because a lot of our libraries, a lot of the places where people normally tap wifi, are closed,” said Ramos.RELATED: San Diego County opens cool zones amid heat waveFacilities like that will be crucial due to a Flex Alert issued for all of California through Wednesday. The Flex Alert goes from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day, and everyone is asked to conserve energy to decrease demands during the heat wave and ideally prevent the need to cut off power in areas, however, consumers should be prepared for the likelihood of rotating outages.Between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., the California Independent System Operator (ISO) is urging consumers to:Set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees, if health permits.Defer use of major appliances.Turn off unnecessary lights.Unplug unused electrical devices.Close blinds and drapes.Use fans when possible.Limit time the refrigerator door is open. 2136
