SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The gradual reopening of San Diego beaches continues the week of June 8. Parking lots are next on the list to reopen.Starting Monday, June 8, park and water use are open at East and West Mission Bay Parks with no restrictions. Mission Bay parking lots are open. Fiesta Island is open to pedestrians, dogs and cyclists as of June 8 but will not open for cars until July 6.Starting Tuesday, June 9, all San Diego piers and boardwalks are open. Plus, San Diego beach parking lots are open with no restrictions.Friday, June 12, Balboa Park Central Mesa opens, along with Balboa Park parking lots.While beaches are officially open for both active and passive activities, social distancing should still be practiced, meaning people should only sit near people who they live with. San Diego Democratic delegate Jess Durfee has attended the last four of his party's conventions to select the presidential nominee.Some days, he spends more than 15 hours attending meetings, luncheons and waiting for major speeches on the floor."There is nothing like attending a convention," he says.There is also nothing like the Democratic National Convention for 2020, which begins Monday. It's going all virtual in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak. It starts with a keynote speech from Sen. Bernie Sanders, and will conclude Thursday when Joe Biden officially accepts the presidential nomination. Durfee used to attend with his San Diego counterparts. This year he was supposed to go to the convention in Milwaukee. Instead, he'll be joining from his home office in University Heights. "We would normally be seeing one another, even having breakfast together... We'd grab a couple of tables, and say 'these are San Diego tables, get away,'" he said, jokingly.The same virtual format will apply for the Republican National Convention, happening next week. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, says these conventions are essentially one long political ad. The business of the party is not the priority - it's getting voters excited for November."The big question here is whether America will want to watch something that looks like the Zoom meetings many of us have been in all day," he said. But Kousser said there is intense political interest that could push up viewership. SAN DIEGO, CA — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego calls it the "Get It Done" App, but a Normal Heights man says he wants to know when work will get done."They block the sidewalk. They've ripped through my canopy. They've killed my two lemon trees," said Mike Scaglione as he stood in front of his home. He's referring to the damage caused by palm fronds that fall from two trees on city property he says are in serious need of maintenance. "It'll be seven years tomorrow that I've lived here and in that time frame I've probably picked up 3 or 4 hundred palm fronds."Scaglione said he's been trying for several months to get the city to keep up with the trimming of the two palms outside his home. "They say they're going to, or they direct me to somebody, but it just keeps going no where until it's a dead end." Scaglione says aside from the damaged to his property, he fears a potential for much worse. "Its kind of hard to see," he says, grabbing a palm frond from a pile collected near the trees, "but if you run your hand along here there's a pretty jagged toothed edge on here that if it was to land on somebody it could rip them pretty nicely."Scaglione has been using the city's Get It Done app. Past reports show crews have responded to clean up the fronds once they're on the ground. But when it came to a neighborhood tree trim last October he says, "They came through here and trimmed every tree on the block except mine." Scaglione said he asked the crews why. "They didn't have anything that could get up that high." Scaglione estimates the trees at 40 to 50 feet.In response to an inquiry by 10News, a city spokesperson sent an email explaining San Diego is on a two-year cycle for trimming city owned palm trees. Scaglione's block was on the schedule for October. But there's still more work to be done. So, does that mean the trees in front of Scaglione's home will be trimmed? "Yes," replied the spokesperson, "It is on the schedule." Though Mike feels like he's been here before."They would look into it when they were doing similar work in the neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat damaged the USS Midway Sunday.The mast of the sailboat collided with a safety net attachment on the front port-side ‘horn’ of the ship. The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. according to Harbor Police.The mast of the sailboat snapped off. There was minor damage to the safety nets of the Midway.“I thought something fell off the flight line, I didn't think a boat would crash into the Midway,” said Craig Wiener, who was touring the Midway at the time of the crash. “We were looking out the little port windows, and you see the mast falling off into the water."Harbor patrol says no charges are expected and attributed the crash to inexperience on the part of the person steering the sailboat.  Eight people were onboard the sailboat, and none of them were hurt.“He didn't realize how close he was and how tall his mast was and it was too late and the wind pulled him in,” Wiener said. 945
