JUNO BEACH, Fla. — Plastic may be impacting sea turtles more than you might think.According to a new international study, plastic was found in the gut of every single sea turtle researchers examined, casting light on just how bad plastic pollution is in our oceans.The problem lies with microplastics, which from plastic that ends up in the ocean through pollution. It breaks down into tiny pieces due to the sun and other environmental factors and then gets eaten by sea turtles and other marine life that mistakes it for food.The new research was published in the journal Global Change Biology. It found plastic in more than 100 sea turtles across the world in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.Click here to read the studySome of the objects researchers found in the turtles' guts included tire pieces, cigarettes and fishing line."Some of these chemicals are known to be endocrine disruptors, which means they mess up the hormones of the turtles," said Charles Manire, staff veterinarian at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida. "They may affect the immune system, making them vulnerable to infections."In addition to treating sick and injured sea turtles, LMC also conducts research on the sea turtle population, including recent a collaboration with the University of Georgia to study plastic's impact on sea turtles. "We published a study recently where we examined 97 post hatchling and tiny juvenile turtles — we had plastic in all but one of those," Manire said.Click here to read the LMC/UGA studyThey've found the same problems locally, mainly in post-hatchling and juvenile turtles."That generation of turtles may not survive and that could have a major impact on the population if we don’t have turtles growing up to reach adulthood," Manire said. "Plastics have toxins in them. The chemicals that are used to makes the plastics are affecting the turtles in ways that are not very obvious to us."Manire explained that the area where the baby turtles live and grow lies within the seaweed patch offshore and, unfortunately, that's where the problem exists."It’s also where trash accumulates, in the same area," he said. "Especially with the very tiny bits of plastic, these little turtles are eating it because it looks like food to them."The new study by Global Change Biology also estimates between 4.8 million and 12.7 million tons of plastic waste could be entering oceans every year."It’s not affecting just the turtles. It’s affecting a lot of them out there," he said. "But the turtles are the sentinel that tells us something is wrong and the little turtles are definitely telling us something is wrong."If you want to help lessen the impact of plastic on marine life, Manire said, you can start by picking up any trash you see on the beach."We're trying to educate the public, trying to educate the world, telling the story so that people realize just how bad the situation is," he said. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Johnson County Library is searching for the owner of an old family photo it believes was mistakenly left at the library.A library employee found the photo in the donation bin at the Lackman Library in Lenexa, Kansas."Because of that we don't know who dropped it off, where it came from or who it belongs to," said Josh Neff, an information specialist at the library.The photo was left in the bin in March and the library has been holding on to it ever since."We have been holding on to it hoping that whoever accidentally lost it, would think to come back here and ask about it. But so far nobody has claimed it," said Neff.Now, the library is turning to social media in hopes of finding the photo's owner. On Monday, the library posted the image on Facebook and Twitter."We know the power of social media. We know that it's a great way to spread the message," Neff said. KINGS MILLS, Ohio - Patrick Farrell has a very full heart, but he was running on empty Sunday afternoon.The Kings Mills man was straining to finish a 100-mile run to raise money for orphans on the other side of the globe.Farrell took only short breaks for fuel and to change shoes. His first pair had sheet metal screws on the bottom."Because there was snow on the ground (Saturday),” he explained after his grueling 30-hour endeavor.You could say Farrell had his heart in it all the way.  “I decided to blend my passion for running and helping orphans,” he said.Farrell said he did it for six girls at an orphanage in Nepal who are not available for U.S. adoption.“There's a non-profit organization called Love Does and they're always looking for people to do fundraisers to provide financial support for the orphanage,” Farrell said.It’s a cause that close to Farrell's heart because he and his wife Susan adopted their four youngest kids from China.The Farrells said they got the idea after their only biological child, Karrie, noticed families who had adopted Chinese children. Karrie did her own research and started asking her parents to adopt, too.The Farrells’ kids know the importance of helping orphans, so they encouraged their dad on his run through their neighborhood.“I'm just so glad I'm not doing it,” said Caitlin, the Farrells’ first adopted child.Farrell said he went through three pairs of shoes running on trails and concrete. Other took turns running with him.Susan kept her husband fed and hydrated as best she could, but she could see him slipping as the miles and hours took their toll.“He really did great for probably the first 70 miles, but then as evening set in and the cold and the weariness, he hit a wall bigger than I've ever seen before,” Susan said.“I experienced sleep deprivation at a number of points,” Patrick said.  “There's times when you just want to go inside and put your head down on a pillow and go to sleep.”But the people running with him and encouraging pulled him through, Susan said.“I really feel like the friends that came and helped him all through the night were a big key. I don't know if he could've done it without them,” she said.This was the second time Farrell has run 100 miles to raise money for the orphanage.
