BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun, Friday urged the Chinese automobile industry to enhance indigenous technology and foster domestic brands while visiting an auto technology show here.At the China Achievements Expo for Self-innovated Auto Technology and Products, Li Changchun said boosting innovative capacity was pivotal to economic restructuring and shifting the economic growth pattern.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said respect for innovation and talent should be the norm.The auto show, which runs from Thursday to Monday, features more than 140 cars from 16 Chinese companies. BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health issued a circular Wednesday advising the nation's medical facilities to gear up for a rise in the number of people suffering from heat-stroke and other heat related ailments given the recent hot temperatures.The number of people suffering from heat-stroke and related disorders has risen sharply over the last few days, reads the circular without giving specific figures.Beijing-based Chaoyang hospital reported a significant increase of cases showing heat-induced symptoms such as dizziness, according to the Health News, the health ministry-run newspaper.The hospital has 450 such cases in emergency care each day now, compared to 360 cases just a few days ago.The ministry ordered hospitals across the nation to make sure people suffering from heat stroke get timely and proper treatment.Beijing reported an average temperature of 40.3 degrees Celsius at 4 p.m. Monday, the highest temperature in the first 10 days of July in 50 years.The capital city cooled a little bit Wednesday, and rains are expected for China eastern regions starting Thursday, offering some respite.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have launched crackdowns all over China to curb online soccer gambling as the 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa.More than 100 people have been detained for participating in online soccer gambling with more than 10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) in funds involved in one case in Yuyao City, east China's Zhejiang Province, said Dong Xiaowei, deputy chief of the provincial public security bureau.More than 70 gambling groups have been cracked for online soccer gambling this year with more than 300 arrested, he said.Similar cases have been uncovered in Beijing, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Fujian and Shandong.There are about 2,000 Chinese and offshore websites for soccer gambling in China, and the membership of some websites amounts to one million, according to Public Security Ministry data.Gambling is prohibited on the Chinese mainland by law.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Food poisoning in China killed 56 and sickened 2,452 others between January and May this year, the Ministry of Health said here Wednesday.In a report posted on its website, the ministry said 27 people, about half of the deaths, were killed by food poisoning at home.The deaths were mainly caused by the consumption of poisonous vegetables and pesticide- or poison-contaminated food.There were 68 cases of food poisoning at employee and student cafeterias nationwide in the five months resulting in the poisoning of almost 1,650 people and the deaths of 18. Bacteria-induced food poisoning and improperly cooked kidney beans were the main causes.Seven people were killed by excessive intakes of nitrite, a substance with an appearance similar to salt which can be used as a meat preservatives.The report urged food manufacturers to ensure food safety in accordance with law and called on the public to raise food safety self-awareness levels.
