BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao urged maintaining steady and relatively fast economic development in a New Year address broadcast Thursday to domestic and overseas audience via state TV and radio stations.     He said in 2009, in the face of global financial crisis, Chinese people of all ethnic groups united together and firmly adhered to maintaining steady and relatively fast economic development as the primary task in economic work.     "People's life continued to improve and the society was kept harmonious and stable," said Hu in the address, titled "Jointly Create A Beautiful Future of World Peace and Development," broadcast by China Radio International, China Central Television, and China National Radio..     Hu said that the year 2010 is the last year of the country's 11th Five-Year Plan period and the country will continue to implement a proactive fiscal policy and a moderately easy monetary policy. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday that both China and the United States appreciated the major role of the G20 summit in coping with the global financial crisis.     Speaking to the press after talks with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama, Hu said he and Obama spoke highly of the significant roles played by the G20 summit.     "China and the United States would work together with all other members to fully carry out the commitments of all G20 summits and continuously strengthen the role of G20 in the management of the global economy, while pushing forward the international financial system reform and increasing the voices of developing countries on the global financial arena by ensuring that they are better represented," Hu said.

JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 24, (Xinhua) -- Legal ties between China and Africa have taken a major step forward with the conclusion of the First Forum on China-Africa Legal Co-operation in Cairo, Egypt on Monday.     Under the theme "Strengthen China-Africa Legal Exchange and Promote All Round Development of China-Africa Relationship", this forum was the first time lawyers from the China and Africa had met in such circumstances.     Greg Nott, who led the South African delegation, said on his return to Johannesburg on Thursday that he was "terribly excited by this forum and look forward to the implementation of a number of proposals tabled."     These included an exchange and cooperation between Chinese and African legal circles and a legal "think tank" to promote a universal and sustainable development of the China-Africa relationship.     Nott, who is the legal representative of the China-Africa Development Fund as well other China investor clients, said there were a number of other "ambitious and exciting proposals".     These include "the establishment of training and consulting centres as well as training projects for young African lawyers. This goes all hand-in-hand with private sector lawyers driving intellectual and legal support for business activity on both continents."     The forum was convened as the first step towards pragmatic cooperation between Chinese and African legal circles.     It was attended by delegates from Botswana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, as well as a strong delegation from the China Law Society.     The agenda included the important role of law in China-Africa cooperation, an introduction to the legal systems of China and African countries and their impact on trade and investment relations.     A number of prominent Egyptian and Chinese lawyers presided over the panels. The lawyers have much work to do because while China has one legal system, the 53 nations which make up Africa each have their own systems. Most are based on either the British legal system, with elements of Roman/Dutch law, or the French legal system.     There is also a strong legacy of Portuguese influence in former colonies. China's civil law system is based on traditional customs and practices, with Soviet and German influence.     Held on Dec. 20 and 21, the forum was hosted at the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration.     The South African delegation included Rajen Ranchhoojee and Sheng Wu of the Johannesburg legal firm Dewey & LeBoeuf, where Nott is the managing partner.     The legal forum followed shortly after the meeting of foreign ministers at the fourth Forum on Africa China Cooperation, which was held in for Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt from Nov. 8 to 9.     At that meeting South African International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane said China had played an important role in Africa's renewal. "For instance it has had significant role in peacekeeping in Africa."     She said a major strength of Chinese aid was its orientation to recipient priorities such as infrastructure (telecommunications, energy, roads) and productive sector investments (agriculture).     "Furthermore, Chinese assistance is considered to be relatively predictable assistance because it is disbursed on schedule within the intended financial year."     At that point she said development cooperation between South Africa and China is was regulated by two Agreements, "namely an agreement on Human Resource Development that was signed in 2004 and a February 2007 Agreement on Technical and Economic Cooperation". 

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.

STOCKHOLM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Geely Automobile on Wednesday have been confirmed as preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.     Ford said while it would be engaging in more detailed and focused negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made, reported the Swedish news agency TT.     Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. "We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions," a statement of Ford was quoted as saying by TT.     It also pointed out that Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in Volvo.     "Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties," Lewis Booth, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ford Motor Company, said in the statement.     "Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy," Booth added.     "Volvo's management team welcomes today's announcement as a positive step forward," Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said.     "At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to return the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible opportunity," he added.
