ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A dog owner is sharing her story after she says a neutering procedure turned into a month-long nightmare.On the morning of February 21st, Brigitte Yvon dropped off 2-year-old Yellow Lab Davie at her veterinarian in Encinitas to be neutered. Hours later, she got a call saying everything went well and she picked up her dog early that afternoon. For the next nine days, Yvon tended to him. Davie kept whimpering and trying to get at his back, but Yvon thought it was part of the recovery from the neutering. Yvon then noticed something on Davie's back."Fur was matted. Skin was raw and bleeding in places," said Yvon.She used a clipper and found more of the same under the fur. She took him to another vet, who shaved his back to reveal third-degree burns across his back. "They told me to prepare for what I was about to see. I was horrified and devastated," said Yvon.Yvon brought photos to the original veterinarian."He did apologize and admit responsibility," said Yvon. She says he didn't go into detail, but pointed to saline bags used to warm up and regulate body temperature during and after the procedure. Yvon says he agreed to pay for treatment. Yvon says the veterinarian has since filed a claim with his insurer.For Davie, the treatment has included surgery and several rounds of antibiotics. For Yvon, there have been plenty of sleepless nights. She has this message for other pet owners: Ask questions and educate yourself on the most basic of procedures.Yvon asked us not use the name of the vet, because her only goal is to increase awareness of the risks. Experts suggest asking your veterinarian how they warm up animals when anesthesia is used. Devices like warming blankets with temperature alarms are considered safer.The veterinarian who performed the procedure issued the following statement: "While I would like to respond with an accurate account of what transpired, it is my professional responsibility to respect client confidentiality. When this client called with a concern I responded immediately. I worked with her to identify how to move forward with his healing. We provided treatment for the wound and care for the pet and consulted with specialists and offered the best options, and the client was not charged. We understand that pets are part of the family. We want to make sure that our clients receive the highest level of care available. We are truly glad to hear that Davie is doing well and expected to have a full recovery and hope he has a long and happy life." 2539

(KGTV) -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop in Escondido early Friday morning.The incident happened at around 3:45 a.m. on Broadway, near Washington Avenue, according to Escondido police.Police said officers were initially called to a home in the 300 block of Park Avenue due to a reported restraining order violation. In the call, a woman said her former husband, 44-year-old Rosendo Sandoval Quezada was at her home and she identified his vehicle.On Broadway, an officer spotted a white car being driven by Quezada and pulled him over.According to police, Quezada "exited his vehicle holding a 3-foot long crow bar and ran toward the officer."Police confirmed the situation prompted the officer to fire multiple shots. Quezada was struck in the abdomen, and he was transported to Palomar Hospital for treatment of his injuries.Police said the officer, who was not injured in the incident, is a 4-year veteran of the department. A lieutenant at the scene told 10News he believes this was the first time the officer was involved in a shooting. The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.According to police, the officer’s body camera was active during the incident.A stretch of Broadway at Washington Ave. was closed for several hours due to the probe. 1364

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- It was a murder-mystery that gripped San Diego County. The family of 12-year-old Stephanie Crowe, waking up on the morning of January 21, 1998, to a horrifying discovery.Stephanie - lying dead on her Escondido bedroom floor in a pool of blood, after being stabbed multiple times.Her family told detectives they were asleep inside the house when the murder happened and heard nothing. Detectives say they found no signs that someone forced their way inside.The investigation and court battles that followed would change the way law enforcement collects evidence and performs interrogations."It was a case where there were clearly major problems with the investigation," said Brad Patton, Richard Tuite's criminal defense attorney. "The problems with the investigation related to the crime scene."Patton spoke with 10News on Thursday, nearly 20 years after Stephanie's death. He told 10News the problems surround the case were how police collected evidence and how detectives interrogated suspects. Problems that caused the case to turn cold - letting Stephanie's true killer continue to walk the streets in San Diego County.  "I don't think the Crowe family will ever get closure," Patton said. Who killed Stephanie Crowe?In the months after her death, Stephanie's 14-year-old brother, Michael and two of his friends would be charged with the murder. A knife was found under the bed of John Treadway. Both he and Stephanie's brother Michael later confessed to detectives during videotaped interrogations.The boys were subjected to intense, prolonged questioning and deprived of food and sleep. The confessions were later judged to be coerced and the charges were dropped. Then, a new suspect. Richard Tuite. He was a transient and diagnosed schizophrenic. Brad Patton was his defense attorney. Tuite was seen in the Escondido neighborhood that night - banging on doors, looking for an old girlfriend. Most damning of all, he was seen wearing a sweatshirt with Stephanie's blood on it. "Mr. Tuite could not, did not, go into that house. There was no forensic evidence of him being in that house," Patton said. There were no hairs, no fibers, no DNA. Tuite claimed he found the sweatshirt while dumpster-diving. Tuite was convicted and would spend more than a decade behind bars. Then, he got an appeal.  An appeal where he was found not guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Stephanie's parents never suspected her brother. Years ago, her mom had this to say to 10News, after Tuite was cleared:"I just hope that North County is aware that he's going to be out walking the streets and that people lock their doors."The murder of Stephanie Crowe is still unsolved.Patton says there's only one way he sees the mystery solved. "You're probably never going to find the actual killer unless that person comes forward at some time," he said. The Crowe family has since moved to the Pacific Northwest. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 17-year-old was killed early Saturday morning following a hit-and-run in unincorporated Escondido. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Mesa Rock Road near Mesa Ranch Drive around 12:30 a.m. CHP says the 17-year-old female was standing outside a vehicle parked on the right shoulder having a conversation with four friends. Three of the individuals, including the teen, crossed the road from east to west. As they crossed, CHP says either a white Toyota SUV or a pickup truck speeding northbound struck the teen."The California Highway Patrol Oceanside Area is asking the public for assistance in locating a 2008 to 2012 model year range second generation, Toyota Highlander, pearl white in color.
