OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A partnership is turning around the lives of young people at risk in North County. As 10News explores Life in Oceanside, we’re turning our focus to the success of the Boys & Girls Club. One of the young people helped by the program is 17-year-old Hunter Meyer. Like many teenagers, he struggled to find himself. RELATED: Mayor Pete Weiss talks Life in Oceanside“I became someone who preferred to sneak out late, get into a lot of trouble and run-ins with police,” said Meyer. Meyer said he started hanging out with gang members in sixth grade. As a freshman, he was kicked out of high school. Life became more difficult for him. “We were drinking and I came back just feeling like I’ve lost everything. I kind of lost who I was, you know, and then the next day I tried to hang myself and my mom and little brother walked in. That was kind of the turning point where I realized things needed to change drastically,” Meyer said. RELATED: Oceanside businesses continue to rely on thriving military communityMonths later, Meyer found out he was referred to a program to help at-risk youth called Oceanside Youth Partnership. It was started by Oceanside Police Lt. Valdavinos. “The people he was dealing with didn't have positive relationship with law enforcement and we weren't getting to them early enough,” said Ashley Sanchez, an OYP crime prevention specialist and mentor. Meyer was in the first class, spending two hours per week for 12 weeks to be redirected away from gangs. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man died early Saturday morning after being hit by a vehicle while crossing State Route 76, according to the Oceanside Police Department.The crash happened just before 1 a.m. on SR-76 near Old Grove Road.Police say a 2005 Lexus sedan was traveling westbound on the 76 when the driver struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.After hitting the man, the driver pulled to the center median and waited for police to arrive.“Neither Alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision on the driver’s part. It is unknown the pedestrian was under the influence of any substance at this time,” police said.The name of the pedestrian has not been released. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man died Thursday in an Oceanside home after a fistfight with a relative, police said.Officers were called to the home in the 600 block of Arthur Ave. at 7:17 a.m. because of an argument between two men in the front yard. When police arrived, they found Nestor Jurado, 37, not breathing. Jurado was pronounced dead at the scene."It appears he died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the fight," Lt. Kedrick Sadler said. Police arrested 35-year-old Joel Cardona and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility on a murder charge.Sadler said the reason for the fight is unknown and no weapons were found at the scene. Jurado's sister told 10News Cardona is their mother's cousin. 763

There are beach breaks, and it has some jetties, as well as a pier. It's very good practice for where ever we go around the globe."And the beaches also resemble the type of waves team U.S.A.will be competing on when they get to Japan next year."For us to be able to utilize something that's similar to the Olympic site, without having to travel to Japan, is going to be very helpful to our team," says Cruse.And this Sunday, Oceanside is calling on all surfers to hit the waves in support of California Surfing Day. (KGTV) — Defense attorneys for 15 Marines accused of human smuggling said they hope the judge dismisses the case.The attorneys argued that the Commander illegally used his power to discipline the Marines publicly, and therefore influenced the outcome of the case.It was a very public display of discipline.Fifteen Camp Pendleton Marines were cuffed and taken away by NCIS agents in front of an 800-person battalion formation in July. They were accused of human smuggling and conspiracy.But now, attorneys representing a few of the accused Marines said the public arrests violated their rights. Now, they are filing what's called an "undue command influence" motion against the Battalion Commander who led the formation."Anytime you have a Commander who is in a position of leadership who potentially affects a subordinate's rights to a fair trial, that can be viewed as potential 'undue command influence,'" military attorney Gary Barthel explained. "This motion for 'undue command influence' was made against the Battalion Commander for making comments and parading the 15 individuals out for what was supposed to be a recognition, and they were ultimately arrested." Barthel is a former legal advisor to Camp Pendleton's Commanding General. He said a Commanding Officer's job is to maintain good order and discipline their command. But in military law, they also wear the prosecutor and jury selector hats."Those two hats can clash," Barthel said. "That's why it's important for Commanding Officers to be careful what they say with regard to their views of the military justice system, or their views of a particular individual who has been accused of an offense."The defense team said the Commander used his power to influence the outcome of the case unfairly. But Barthel said in his experience with 'undue command influence' cases, he believes the military has likely already taken the Commander in question off the case."You can take the individual that allegedly made the statements involved out of the process, and that keeps the process fair and impartial," Barthel said.
