after the teen started complaining about headaches and a pain in her arm.Nicole Lambert sent her daughter to get checked out by a pediatrician. The doctor notified her that the three-year contraceptive, Nexplanon, had been improperly implanted in her daughter's arm and it needed to be removed.According to paperwork on Merck's website, the maker of Nexplanon, the implant should go on the inside of the upper arm. Photos show Lambert's daughter had the implant near the back of her arm. Her doctor advised taking the implant out to avoid possible complications, including blood clots."I instantly started crying because just to hear that your child, anything could happen to your child and you didn't even know what's going on, it's a scary feeling," Lambert said. The tiny tube was removed a few days later."I actually went to the school. I was furious. I was mad, so I went to the school and the nurse told me, 'I don't have to talk to you about absolutely nothing.' I'm like that is my child, I take care of this child, you can talk to me about my child, and they put me out of the school," said Lambert.Birth control dispensed in city schoolsThe state law permitting minors to receive contraceptive services confidentially dates back nearly 50 years. And several of Baltimore City's 17 School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) provide reproductive health care services.Of the five SBHCs operated by the Baltimore City Health Department, there were 164 users of birth control during the 2017-2018 school year. The different kinds of birth control include oral contraceptive pills, Plan B, Depo-Provera, NuvaRing, and Nexplanon. WMAR requested the data above for the eight SBHCs operated by the Baltimore Medical System. The Baltimore City Law Department and Baltimore Medical System did not provide the requested information. 1826

and report the crime to Cleveland police. On Oct. 16, officers responded to the 1700 block of East 12th Street after receiving a report of a woman who might be involved in a human trafficking case, police said. The woman, who is from Gambia, told police that she was sold to a family as a laborer to take care of a sick and elderly woman from Kuwait.According to the woman, she had been living with the family for the past four years in Kuwait and on Aug. 12 traveled to Cleveland with the family because the elderly woman required medical treatment at Cleveland Clinic. While speaking with police, the woman told officers that the family had been keeping her locked in an apartment at Reserve Square in the 1700 block of East 14th Street. She said that she never had the opportunity to report her situation to police or escape before because the family was either around or, if they left, they would lock her in a bedroom in the apartment. On Oct. 16, the family left her locked in the bedroom and left the apartment around 9:47 p.m., and for the first time she was able to escape, police said.In addition to contacting police, the woman was also able to get in contact with a victim advocate in Arizona. Officers contacted the advocate to get a better understanding of the situation because the woman’s English was very limited, according to police. While talking with the advocate, officers learned that the woman was in fear for her life and said that she didn’t want to go back to the family that held her captive and that she fears going back to Gambia because she believes she will be killed, police said. When officers investigated the apartment the woman said she was being held in, they found that it was vacant, but the smell of hookah was prominent in the empty space, according to police. While with the officers, the woman began receiving multiple calls from a phone number she said belonged to the family that held her captive. When asked, she was only able to provide police with a description of the elderly woman she said she was purchased to care for, police said. The woman was transported to a local organization where she is being given shelter and resources, according to police. The incident remains under investigation. This story was originally published by 2276

her disabled grandson over the weekend. The Bradenton Police Department conducted the death investigation at an apartment in the 5100 block of Riverfront Drive on Sunday. When officers arrived at the home, they found 30-year-old Joel Parks, who unable to take care of himself, deceased. His grandmother and guardian, Lillian Parks, told officers on scene she "overdosed her grandson with the intention of ending his life," according to police.Police say Parks admitted to everything."She made statements to responding officers that she had purposely overdosed him cause she's dealing with some medical issues herself," Capt. Brian Thiers said. "She's worried when she's gone there will be nobody there to care for him.Thiers said Joel lived in a group home five days a week and spent weekends with his grandmother. After Parks is medically evaluated, police say she’ll be charged with 2nd degree murder. "At the end of the day, Lillian is responsible for the death of another human being," Thiers said. "So, she will be charged with 2nd-degree murder upon her release. She's in a secure medical facility right now. When the doctor releases her, we are intending on charging her with 2nd-degree murder."This story was originally published by WFTS. 1246
