For 9-year-old Joey DeLeon, staying on track can be hard. His mom, JoAnn Lopez, would have to tell him several times to brush his teeth or use his puffer. So, when she heard about The Attention Arcade, a new game system that helps kids focus, she was immediately interested."I figured if it was something we could try and it would work and we could help other kids,” said Lopez. “If it does work, why not do it?”DeLeon is part of a beta test group for Brain Leap Technologies, the company that created the game system. The game comes with a black bar that attaches to your PC. It tracks the child’s eye movements and allows the child to control the game with his or her eyes."The eye movement system and the attention system share neurocircuitry," said Bran Leap Technologies CEO Jeff Coleman. "We are leveraging the eye-movement system. It’s really hard to pin down the attention system, but we leverage the fact that they’re connected to train attention through eye movements."In a new study done at the University of California San Diego that's backed by the National Institutes of Health, Coleman says they saw on average of 55 percent improvement in inhibitory control. That’s the skill you need to not get distracted. And it’s working for DeLeon."I’m good at task initiation, especially when I write things down," said DeLeon. "When my brothers and sister are playing, and they're loud, there's a 50/50 chance I don't get distracted by them.”"He’s gotten better at being independent and just doing it on his own without being asked multiple times. I mean, he still has days where it’s just days, but overall much improved," said Lopez. With DeLeon and his two brothers and sister doing virtual learning this school year, Lopez hopes this helps him focus on his own school work."His grades have been always great when he puts effort in, but he just gets sidetracked a lot, and so hopefully this year, we will see that that has subsided," said Lopez. 1960

FORT MYERS, Fla. —A man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to set a Planned Parenthood on fire in Fort Myers, Florida. The Lee County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that Everett Little was taken into custody after a search warrant was served at his home. The 20-year-old man is being charged with arson, criminal mischief, and using an incendiary device.Officers believe Little committed arson at the facility on Commerce Park Drive on Oct. 10.The act was caught on surveillance cameras and law enforcement distributed the photos of the suspect, asking the public for help locating him.In the end, authorities said they identified Little thanks to the community’s help."That act was caught on camera, and through Crime Stoppers, he's behind bars," said Sheriff Carmine Marceno in a statement on Facebook. "Those tips led to an arrest, and we were fortunate that those tips came in."If you have any information about this incident, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online.Staff at WFTX contributed to this report. 1057

For two minutes, people and traffic in Israel today paused to remember the estimated 6 million lives lost during the Holocaust. The Times of Israel reports that at 10 a.m. local time, nationwide sirens blared as a day of remembrance began. It also shared this video to Facebook: The Holocaust was a genocide during World War II in which millions of European Jews were killed by Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler, between 1941 and 1945.Beginning in the early 1930s, the German government passed laws to exclude Jews from civil society. Many were moved to concentration camps, ghettos and detention sites.A new survey found that Americans are beginning to lack basic knowledge about the Holocaust. The survey found that nearly half of all Americans — 41 percent — couldn't identify Auschwitz, a concentration camp where an estimated 1.1 million Jews and minorities were killed at the hands of Nazis during World War II. Among millennials, that number rose to 66 percent. The survey also found that a significant portion of Americans don't understand the scale of the Holocaust. Fertility benefits for America's Paralyzed Veterans will expire this September, leaving many people concerned about the future of their family planning and could mean that some wouldn't have a family at all.Chris and Ash Hull recently welcomed their newborn baby Penelope Jane, or as they call her, "P.J."“She’s got my chin and my nose and my eyes. It’s like looking into the mirror and seeing a baby me. It’s cool,” Chris Hull said.Chris and Ash both knew they wanted a family. In fact, Ash knew that Chris was "the one" when she first met him.“I knocked and Chris was the open that opened the door, big smile on his face- I was smitten right then the rest is history,” Ash Hull said. They got married and started talking about a family, which for them, would be complicated. A car accident in 2004 left Chris with quadriplegia. The accident happened when he was on his way home for leave.“Had my car accident on exit 13 on Friday the 13th,” he said. “My friend fell asleep. We rolled 12-18 times. I broke my neck my back -- 3 ribs, my collar bone, my ankle. I think it was 11 bones in the accident.”He doesn't remember much of the accident, but it left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.“I’m a C6, C7, quadriplegic spinal cord injury,” Chris Hull said. “Most people when they think of quadriplegia, they think of fully paralyzed, no use of their arms, but I do have use of my arms. It’s just my fingers that are affected.”He's an active member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, which introduced him to adaptive sports. He's been in a wheelchair for 16 years and uses it to get around, and otherwise lives a completely normal life. When he and Ash decided they wanted a family, they were prepared - like anything else in life - to do whatever it takes. But it would require in vitro fertilization.IVF is an extremely expensive and sometimes an emotionally exhausting procedure. Had they not had benefits through the V.A., parenting may not have been possible.“It’s a really small community of people who need this coverage with paralyzed veterans and the ability to have their baby paid for through IVF and we feel like we have something to give as parents and if we didn’t have this benefit we’d struggle,” Chris Hull said. That coverage is something that Heather Ansley, who does Government Relations for the Paralyzed Veterans of America, is working on right now- as the benefits surrounding IVF will expire this fall.“There was a provision back in sept of 2016 that allowed the VA to do this on a temporary basis- something that would have to be reauthorized,” Ansley said. She's preparing her case for Congress in hopes of making IVF coverage permanent.“We think these benefits are something that our nation owes to our catastrophically disabled veterans particularly those who’s injuries are a direct result of their military service and this is the least that we as a grateful nation can do for their sacrifice,” Ansley said.“If we no longer have that benefit it's really going to change our family planning,” Chris Hull said. When asked whether there will be a sibling in the future, he said, “We really hope so we may have to go back to work we may face the financial strain of having to pay ourselves.”While September is looming, they know that little P.J. will want a brother or sister. And they hope Congress will help make that happen. 3368
