Would you have surgery performed if it was done by a robot? Robotic surgery is now an option at more hospitals across the country.Patient Matthew Canino says the technology helped his heart.“The nature of being a SWAT officer can be very taxing on your body,” Canino says. “So, you have to be in very good physical condition.”But when Canino trained, he noticed something was off.“My heart would race, primarily when I was working out, it would race,” Canino remembers. “And I'd get short of breath. And I kind of I would just stop what I was doing, and it would go away, and I thought everything was fine.”But it wasn’t. Canino’s doctors found out a valve in his heart was leaking.“He said if it wasn't repaired it would continue to get worse and would likely lead to heart failure,” Canino recalls. He thought he’d have to get open heart surgery. However, his doctor recommended a robot instead.“We can get inside the heart through these keyhole incisions on the side of the chest, without cutting through any bones,” says Dr. Sanjay Tripathi, cardiothoracic surgeon at Swedish Medical Center.Dr. Tripathi inserted this camera and robotic arms inside Canino’s chest, and then he sat down at a console inside the operating room where he controlled the robot to do the surgery.“With the robotic technology, particularly 3D high definition imaging from the camera, we're able to see these fine details that would otherwise be a little bit more difficult,” Dr. Tripathi says.Swedish Medical Center is the only hospital in Colorado offering cardiothoracic surgeries with the aid of a surgical robot. But they’re becoming available at more hospitals around the country, and patients are seeing big benefits.“Less pain,” Dr. Tripathi says. “Faster recovery, less bleeding, fewer infections.”“By the third day I was almost completely pain free and needed no pain medication at all,” Canino says. Not all heart surgeries can be done robotically, but the hope is as technology advances, that will change. 2006

(AP) — Long Beach police say a shuttle bus driver who took passengers on a long, scary ride wasn't kidnapping them: he was just lost.Passengers began jumping out of the bus windows Thursday night when their expected five-minute ride to the "Dark Harbor" Halloween event at the Queen Mary tourist attraction turned into a long ride into neighboring Carson. The Long Beach Press-Telegram says police report the driver became disoriented by street closures. Some of the 20 to 30 passengers on board said the driver refused to heed their demands to stop the bus. Cellphone video showed some jumping out of windows. After several 911 calls, authorities stopped the bus.Authorities say they're still looking into a battery allegation that the driver punched a man who wanted him to stop.Passengers told KABC-TV they pleaded with the driver to stop and let them off but he wouldn't respond, and when he struck a rider they began jumping out the bus windows. 971

(CNN) -- Don't worry too much about the two national turkeys chosen for presidential pardons this year. Not only is their salvation secured, but so's their retirement home. For the fourth straight year, the special pair will flock from the White House to enjoy their golden years at -- wait for it -- Gobblers Rest at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg."Virginia Tech has a long tradition of supporting the turkey industry through research and outreach, so it's fitting that the Presidential Turkeys becoming part of the Hokie Nation is a new tradition," said Rami Dalloul, a professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in a statement. Dalloul is a poultry immunologist who sequenced the turkey genome. The National Thanksgiving Turkey and its alternate will join Peas and Carrots, last year's pardoned birds. Earlier lucky cluckers Wishbone and Drumstick, plus Tater and Tot, died at Gobblers Rest of natural causes. The school says the two birds are chosen based on appearance and temperament, then sent to a hotel near the White House for media events. One will be plucked for the Rose Garden ceremony sometime next week, while the other will serve as its wingman. The tradition goes back to 1947, when President Harry Truman "pardoned" the first holiday bird. 1312

Would you like to buy a reliable used car at a good price without hearing this cheesy pitch: “What will it take to get you into this car today?”Several online car sellers are trying to remove sales lines like this along with other pain points car buyers face. These virtual used-car sellers not only ditch the dreaded price negotiations and shorten the buying process, but also offer lower average prices than brick-and-mortar dealerships, a recent analysis shows. While car-buying experts see some potential risks, they say the future of car shopping may be buying online.Comparing prices: online vs. on the lotThe analysis, conducted for NerdWallet by automotive research firm 690

"However, I am very happy I reported this crime and that the attacker was found."Vergara is being held without bail because he violated probation for a prior robbery and vehicle theft. He faces up to 11 years in prison if convicted of the assault by force likely to cause great body injury, which carries hate crime escalation.
