LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas woman and her mom say a man in a parking lot starting insulting them because they were speaking Spanish.It happened in the parking lot of the Smith's grocery store in Southern Highlands. The mother and daughter say they were walking through the lot when a man overheard them speaking Spanish.That's when the daughter decided to get out her phone and start recording the encounter. At one point the woman calls him a racist and the man replies, "Yes, I am. Very much so." Then, after she talks to her mom again in Spanish, the man mimics the woman before saying "Maybe I should go back to where I came from, Ohio, because they don't let you people there."The woman behind the camera shared her video on Facebook. She didn't want to go on camera because she was still shaken up, but wanted to share her video to show what happened to her wasn't acceptable.While the encounter was alarming, it's certainly not isolated. Jose Macias with Make the Road Nevada says many Hispanic-Americans and Spanish speakers, as well as other minority groups, have repeatedly faced similar situations."This has definitely been rising since Trump became president," Macias says. "Hate towards immigrants, to people that speak Spanish has been rising up."As for the woman behind the cameras, shoppers KTNV spoke with in the same parking lot hope she'll remember some different messages instead when she comes back to shop."We have enough hatred. KIDS IN QUARANTINE"2020 was rough for everybody," said Las Vegas mom Danielle Willard.She and her husband Benjamin have been fortunate enough to keep their jobs, but their family is still feeling the effects of the pandemic. Their kids are currently quarantined after being exposed to COVID-19, and the family knows they're not alone."Thousands of families go through this in Clark County every day," said Danielle.BIGGER THAN ALL OF USThen there are millions of others around the world. Something their whole family is well aware of thanks to the internet and social media."The kids are now realizing this is global. It's huge. It's bigger than all of us," said Benjamin.MONEY WAS FLYINGSo the Willards are doing things a little different this Christmas."Looking back at everything we bought for the kids in previous years, it was almost like money was flying and they didn't understand the value behind it and where it came from," said Danielle.STOP & THINKSo mom and dad came up with a reasonable budget and gave the kids very specific categories for Christmas gifts: things you need, things you want, books and clothes."We had to help them through the choice. What do you do most with your time? What are your hobbies?" said Benjamin."It makes them stop and think, what's really important to them," said Danielle.HELPING OTHERSThey also added a spot for giving something to someone less fortunate."They were extremely excited to be able to help, especially when we explained not everybody's in the position we are," said Danielle.The Willards say this year's wish list is saving them a lot of money while helping them to reflect on what's important and counting their blessings.NOT BUYING AS MANY GIFTS"There are families that won't have a Christmas at all," said Danielle.Some people may feel an extra emotional burden from not being able to buy as many gifts for loved ones this year, but Psychotherapist Caitlin Carmody says there are other options."There are so many different ways we can show people love and affection. LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A hospital parking lot isn’t the typical place for a family reunion, but after 69 days in the hospital, it was the perfect place for the Rael family to gather to celebrate the fact that Wanda Vigil is now going home.Wanda spend 69 days at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood battling COVID-19 — 42 of them on a ventilator.“She’s a fighter. We were told 20 days in she probably wasn’t going to make it,” brother Alan Rael said.Alan and about two dozen family members gathered in the parking lot of St. Anthony’s on Thursday as Wanda was discharged from the hospital.“It’s a beautiful thing. It’s miraculous,” sister Linda Deborah Sanchez said.Hospital workers lined the lobby in a socially distanced fashion to clap and cheer as Wanda was wheeled out. Her family was waiting outside with signs and hugs.“I am so grateful,” Wanda said.She still has a damaged vocal cord, meaning she can only whisper, and her family acknowledged that she had plenty of recovery still to go.“She still has a journey ahead of her, but she’s alive,” Sanchez said.“My heart is so happy. I’m so happy. My family has been there through thick and thin,” Wanda said.Multiple members of the Rael family were diagnosed with COVID-19, and all recovered. They wanted to send the message that though this day was a happy one, and the vaccine is now being distributed, there are still many people in the hospital fighting the virus.“It’s a serious thing. LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A body was recovered in the ocean off a Southern California beach in the same area where a person was found dead in the water a week earlier. A search was launched Friday following reports of a missing swimmer in the Table Rock area of Laguna Beach. It wasn’t immediately known if the person found dead on Saturday is the swimmer reported missing the previous day. It’s the third death along Orange County’s coastline in the past week.
