BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of National Defense (MOD) Friday introduced its new spokesmen, Senior Colonel Geng Yansheng and Colonel Yang Yujun, to domestic and foreign media during a press tour to an engineering regiment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Geng, 50, and Yang, 40, have become the ministry's third and fourth spokesmen.Their appointment came ahead of the PLA's founding anniversary on Aug. 1. Their two predecessors, Hu Changming and Huang Xueping, have been transferred to other jobs in the ministry.Geng told Xinhua that the MOD plans to hold regular press briefings, since 16 other ministries have done so.About 140 reporters, photographers and cameramen from home and abroad visited the engineering regiment building in southern suburban Beijing, watching dozens of soldiers demonstrating a mock rescue operation at a building which was "reduced" to rubble in a quake.Founded in 1964, the engineering regiment trains rescue members for the China International Search and Rescue (CISAR), which was established in 2001 with its personnel drawn from the China Seismological Bureau and the General Hospital of the Armed Police Force.The CISAR has completed six domestic rescue operations in Xinjiang, Qinghai and Sichuan, and six international rescue missions in Algeria, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia and Haiti.After watching the simulation training, many reporters held interviews with the CISAR members and enquired as to how they managed to work in the face of big disasters."I felt deeply sad and hopeless when someone died in front of me after the quake," said Gao Yansheng, a 19-year-old CISAR member, who took part in the Yushu earthquake search and rescue operation in April.Another CISAR member, whose name was not given, said he was "astonished and also anxious" during the Sichuan earthquake rescue work in 2008.Liu Xiangyang, deputy director of the CISAR, said in an interview with Xinhua that CISAR members became physically and psychologically stronger after going through the Sichuan earthquake rescue work.CISAR members needed to learn more about earthquakes and put up with more complicated disaster situations, Liu added."It will become a routine activity of the PLA to open its military bases for the media interaction beginning around August 1," said Senior Colonel Li Zhen, vice director with the MOD's International Communication Office. "It is for the third time in the last three years that the MOD has tried to showcase the transparency of the 2.3-million strong PLA. In 2008, the ministry invited 103 foreign and domestic reporters to an armored division of the PLA's thump-card No. 38 group army. BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- A swollen subtributary of the Yangtze River has sent a deluge to Danjiangkou Reservoir, a major reservoir in central China's Henan and Hubei provinces, the state flood control agency said Sunday.The water level of the Danjiang River, a tributary of the Hanjiang River, rose to 217.59 meters Saturday afternoon, with a water flow of 10,000 cubic meters per second, the highest since 1953, said a statement of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.Hanjiang River is the second largest tributary of the Yangtze River, China's biggest river.Flood gushed into the Danjiangkou Reservoir, at the confluence of the Danjiang and Hanjiang rivers, 34,100 cubic meters a second early Sunday, the second biggest deluge since the reservoir was built in 1968.Liu Ning, vice minister of water resources and secretary general of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said Sunday that local authority should closely monitor the weather, and step up monitoring efforts against potential flood risks.Premier Wen Jiabao has ordered local governments to adopt scientific measures to prepare well for "more serious floods and disasters" as some of the country's major rivers surpassed their warning levels.Wen said China was at a "crucial stage" for flood control during an inspection tour in Hubei Province that began July 23.

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has said that the government should stick to the pro-active fiscal policy and moderately loose monetary policy in the second half of this year to ensure a stable and relatively rapid economic development.Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks at a symposium held in Beijing Tuesday, with attendance of people from the non-communists parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, as well as celebrities without party affiliations.Other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, including Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, also attended the symposium."We should strengthen our awareness of current risks and challenges the country is facing in economy, and firmly implement the central government's policies to ensure a stable and relatively rapid economic development," Hu said.Hu said the economy is developing in the right direction under the government's macroeconomic controls and the government would maintain the continuity and stability of its economic policies to make them more targeted and flexible according to new conditions.Further, more efforts should be made to strengthen economic forecasts and warning systems, as well as in the coordination of economic policies, Hu added.Hu asked for more efforts in the grain industry to achieve a good harvest this year and to improve control and relief work in combating floods and drought.

MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China has played a role of great importance during the founding and development of G20, Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich said on Monday."Without China's participation, it would be much more difficult for the group to discuss or solve the developmental problems of world economy. Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China's largest gold producer said on Tuesday its operating profits rose by three fold to 1.55 billion yuan (228.09 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months this year.China National Gold Group Corp. said in a statement that its first-half revenue grew by 98 percent from a year earlier to 27.67 billion yuan and expected its full-year revenue to reach 50 billion yuan.At the end of June, the gold producer had 1,250 tonnes of gold reserves, eight million tonnes of copper reserves and 1.6 million tonnes of molybdenum, according to the statement.In the first half of 2010, the company added a total of 24.7 tonnes of gold, 683,000 tonnes of copper and 445,000 tonnes of molybdenum to its reserves, said the statement.The company had improved its development strategies through conducting merge and acquisitions, integrating regional resources and exploring overseas, said Sun Zhaoxue, general manager of the gold producer.
