CHANGSHA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in a fireworks blast in central China' s Hunan Province rose from an earlier announced nine to 12 after DNA tests results were completed , local authorities said Sunday night.Another two people were believed to be missing, police said, adding that three of the 12 victims were still to be identified.The blast, which also injured nine others, occurred in Ningxiang County of Changsha, the provincial capital, at about 9:30 p.m. Friday when a truck loaded with fireworks fuses hit a power pole and sparks from fallen cables ignited the fuses.The blast destroyed the truck and nearby houses, shattering windows and cracking walls hundreds of meters away.Rescue work and clean-up at the site ended on Sunday, a local government spokesman said.The nine injured, who are being treated in hospital, are in stable conditions, according to the spokesman.However, the whereabouts of the truck driver remains unknown.Police continue investigating the accident.

HANOI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Vietnamese people kicked off a four-day mass gala here Saturday in Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi to celebrate 60 years of bilateral diplomatic ties.Tong Thi Phong, Secretarty of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, said at the opening ceremony that bilateral friendly relations between Vietnam and China are the treasure of two peoples, and the two countries have seen strengthened cooperation in various fields in recent years.Phong said the four-day big gathering of the Vietnamese and Chinese people will strengthen mutual understanding between the two countries, enrich bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and advance bilateral ties.Chen Haosu, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said at the opening ceremony that China and Vietnam are good and close neighbors.Chen said this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations and China-Vietnam Friendship Year. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will face the challenge of an aging population over the coming five years and the city has limited experience in dealing with the phenomenon, the Beijing Morning Post reported Saturday.At the end of 2009, registered senior citizens in Beijing numbered 2.27 million, or 18.2 percent of the city's total population of permanent residents, the report said, citing the local government.The city will have a moderately aged society when its aged population reaches 3.24 million in 2015, the report said.Of the city's population of registered senior citizens, 1.94 million, or 85.6 percent, are below the age of 80 years, and 326,000, or 14.4 percent, are above the age of 80 years.In the coming five years, approximately 470,000 senior citizens in Beijing will require nursing.A survey conducted recently by the society and legal system committee of the municipal political consultative conference found that of 4,000-plus respondents, 24.5 percent intended to live in homes for the aged, a level much higher than the 4-percent level the municipal government expected.Some 53.3 percent of respondents said they are willing to spend their twilight years at home. That figure was significantly lower than the 90 percent figure the local government had expected.According to the survey, 99 percent of local citizens born after 1980 said they would not be able to look after their parents during their old age. 

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese military official Saturday urged for improved efforts to deal with the work concerning political and legal affairs in the military.Xu Caihou, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, made the remarks while addressing participants of a military meeting here.Also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Xu urged military officials at various levels to further improve political awareness and their sense of urgency in handling the work concerning political and legal affairs.Praising the remarkable achievements the military has made in work during the past five years, Xu said the armed forces should step up their efforts in this regard to ensure the military's purity and social stability in the coming five years.He noted that the period of 2011-2015 is crucial for China's national defense and military capacity development.Efforts to improve political work should be made towards ensuring the CPC's absolute leadership over the army, as well as maintaining social stability and creating a favorable environment for China's reforms and development, Xu said.Also, he noted, more work should be done to improve the military members' ideological standards and their style of working, adding that unhealthy ways and customs must be corrected.
