in South Carolina on a murder charge in connection to the case.El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder said Letecia Stauch was arrested Monday morning in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in connection to the disappearance of Gannon Stauch. She had reported him missing on Jan. 27. She was taken into custody on charges of first-degree murder of a child under the age of 12 by a person in a position of trust, second-degree child abuse resulting in death, tampering with a deceased human body and tampering with physical evidence, Elder said. He called this arrest part of a "rapidly developing and highly complex investigation."Letecia is being held without bond at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Horry County, South Carolina, and will remain there until she is extradited back to Colorado Springs, Elder said. El Paso Sheriff's Lt. Mitch Mahalko said they are not releasing the information that resulted in Letecia's arrest, but noted that the investigation has been methodical across multiple states. "While we have not yet found Gannon, information has been developed that is helping us narrow our search," he said. "As you can see from the arrest, sadly, we do not believe Gannon is alive. Our work is only just beginning."He said residents in El Paso County will see many law enforcement officials in the county over the coming weeks, and possibly months, as they continue the investigation. As authorities explained the new development, Gannon's parents — mother Landen Hiott and father Albert Stauch — stood behind them and held hands with their heads bowed. Hiott then stepped to the podium. She said while authorities have said that her son is no longer with us, she feels that "he is with us.""After the stories from people all over the world, he's not only my hero now, but he's the world's hero," she said. She said she never thought she'd be standing in that position, and called it a nightmare."I've had to put trust in people I don't know," she said. "Today I got the worst news and the best news. Obviously we know what the worst news is, but the best news is that justice will be served. And I'll make sure of it. Because my boy did not deserve any of this that has happened to him."Jacqueline Kirby, spokesperson for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, read a letter Albert had written. He described the day his son was born — Sept. 29, 2008 — and how his heart stopped. Albert said his son's infectious smile and constant laughter impacted everybody he met. He had been looking forward to the boy's teenage years as he became a young man. His heart stopped again on March 2, 2020, the letter read. "My little boy is not coming home," it read. He said that means no more Nintendo games together, taco Tuesdays, smooth-looking haircuts or "G-Man" for this world. "The person who committed this heinous, horrible crime, is the one that I gave more to (than) anyone else on this planet, and that is a burden that I will carry with me for a very long time," his letter read. Elder said the investigation has only begun and they will not stop until justice is served. Few details have been released in the case, but crews over the last few weeks have been searching in the same general area 3205

It's hard to move cookies when the CDC advises against getting close enough to sell them in person.Christopher "CT" Todd, who leads his daughter's Girl Scout troop and helps run the Sugar n' Spice diner, is feeling the pinch on both ends. The diner is operating with a skeleton crew; the cookies are piling up, uneaten, in scouts' garages and spare rooms."Several troops, really, across the nation are stuck with an excess inventory of cookies that they were going to sell in front of Walmart and Kroger," he said. It's not enough for the girls to eat them themselves. Troops depend on cookie sales to fund activities for the coming year.So Todd and business partner Adam Mayerson came up with a way to help local restaurants and scouts like Lucy at the same time — pair them up.Their initiative is called Business Bosses Supporting Cookie Bosses. It encourages businesses to invest in 0 of Girl Scout cookies and find a creative use for them, whether it's incorporating them into a restaurant recipe, using them as thank-you gifts for customers or donating to a community partner such as a hospital. At Sugar n' Spice, Mayerson and Todd are including a box of cookies in every carry-out order. They're both scared about the future, Mayerson admitted. But they're doing their best to find creative solutions to each day's problems and stay optimistic."That's what we try to stay focused on, being as hopeful as possible," he said. "Every day seems to be bringing new information, different challenges, and we just hope that things get better for anybody and everybody."Even if you live outside of Ohio, you can still help donate to Business Bosses Supporting Cookie Bosses. 1677

— famously acquitted in 1995 in the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman — was found guilty for his role in a 2007 incident that unfolded in a Las Vegas hotel room.Simpson and armed associates allegedly confronted two memorabilia dealers and took pieces of memorabilia from them. Simpson was convicted on charges, including kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. The former college and pro football star said at his sentencing that he was trying to reclaim family heirlooms and other personal items that had been stolen from him, and claimed that he was unaware his associates were carrying guns. 655

Women have been hit harder by job loss during the pandemic, according to an analysis by the Institute for Women's Policy Research. It found in April that the unemployment rate for women increased almost three percentage points above the rate for men. It's a direct contrast to the 2008 recession, which left more men out of work. The institute says this time is different because women dominate the fields that have had the most coronavirus-related layoffs, like hospitality and education.Women of color are even more heavily impacted, with the unemployment rate highest amongst Hispanic women. The institute's president and CEO, C. Nicole Mason, says many of those were low wage jobs.“Many of these women, both black and Latina women, women of color were economically vulnerable before the start of the pandemic,” said Mason. “And the pandemic has only worsened those circumstances and their vulnerability. It's disheartening after a strong start to the year, when the institute celebrated women making up 50% of the workforce. They tell us women will face more challenges getting back to work compared to men.“If it feels hard, it's because it is,” said Mason. “Communities, businesses, as well as policy makers need to step up to make sure that women who are unemployed have the opportunity to reenter the workforce and those who can't have the necessary social supports they need to be able to take care of their families.”The institute says the biggest barrier is a lack of childcare support. They're also pushing for paid sick leave and higher wages. 1559

With various areas of the US under an air quality alert due to recent wildfires, dog owners now have a way to protect to their pets from wildfire smoke. The K-9 Mask, which officially launched in 2019, uses four layers of air filtration to block smoke particles from entering dogs’ lungs. It is shaped like a muzzle to fit over the dog’s mouth and nose. The masks come in four sizes and retail for .99 on its website. In Fall 2018, Evan Daugherty and Kirby Holmes began testing prototypes for the mask amid wildfires in California. After a successful test, Daugherty and Holmes used a crowdfunding campaign to fully fund the project. After 175 donors gave the duo more than ,000, they were able to produce and distribute the K-9 mask starting in 2019.Both the EPA and American Veterinary Medical Association say that smoke from wildfires can be harmful for pets.“Animals with cardiovascular or respiratory disease are especially at risk from smoke and should be closely watched during all periods of poor air quality,” the American Veterinary Medical Association says. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends pet owners look for the following symptoms amid wildfires and times of poor air quality:Coughing or gaggingDifficulty breathing, including open mouth breathing and increased noise when breathingEye irritation and excessive wateringInflammation of throat or mouthNasal dischargeAsthma-like symptomsIncreased breathing rateFatigue or weaknessDisorientation or stumblingReduced appetite and/or thirst 1530
