(KGTV) -- The female passenger of the truck that plowed into a row of street vendors and vehicles waiting to cross the Mexican-U.S. border Monday afternoon says she and the driver were fleeing an attack before the chaotic scene broke out. Summer Draper, who was injured during the incident and is being treated at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, says she and her boyfriend were visiting Tijuana from Utah when the incident occurred.Draper tells 10News the couple went to Tijuana to shop when their truck was allegedly attacked while asking for directions. Draper says the pair didn’t make it to the shops, but instead, tried to reroute to the Costco back by the border. That’s when she says they asked for help. “They said the only way they'd be able to help is if he drove.”Draper says her boyfriend Frank Stricker, 29, was driving and, while he was hesitant, gave in and let the man help. “Instead of going left to Costco he’s going right,” Draper said, adding that’s when her boyfriend started yelling for the man to pull over. “In two seconds the guy pulls over the car and there’s a cop.”Draper remembers hearing gunfire before she says Stricker hit the gas to get away. Minutes later, she says they reached the border, but while stopped in the lanes, they were attacked. Draper says the couple were shot at and their tires slashed. Images from the scene show their truck stopped in a mangled mess while a few dozen people surround the vehicle. One video shows Stricker lying on top of a bloodied Draper outside the truck, seemingly to protect her from the crowd. After the crash, Draper was taken to the hospital where she claims to have been tortured. “They tortured, they laughed at me they had everyone taking pictures of me they seriously did all of this with no medicine I mean I felt everything,” she said. According to Draper, she spent the night at the hospital before being brought to the U.S. for further treatment. Stricker is currently in the custody of Mexican authorities and is facing attempted homicide charges. Videos and images from the incident show that Stricker also suffered injuries, his condition is unknown at this time.According to court documents from Utah, Stricker has drug charges extending back to 2008, including possession or use of a controlled substance, and use or possession of drug paraphernalia. Ohio is grappling with drop boxes for ballots as Texas faces a court challenge over extra days of early voting.Measuring the anxiety over the November election is as simple as tallying the hundreds of voting-related lawsuits filed across the country in recent months. The cases concern the fundamentals of the American voting process, including how ballots are cast and counted, during an election made unique by the coronavirus pandemic and by a president who refuses to commit to accepting the results.The lawsuits are all the more important because President Donald Trump has raised the prospect that the election may wind up before a Supreme Court with a decidedly Republican tilt if his latest nominee is confirmed.“This is a president who has expressed his opposition to access to mail ballots and has also seemed to almost foreshadow the inevitability that this election will be one decided by the courts,” said Kristen Clarke, executive director of the National Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.That opposition was on display Tuesday during the first presidential debate when Trump launched into an extended argument against mail voting, claiming without evidence that it is ripe for fraud and suggesting mail ballots may be “manipulated.”“This is going to be a fraud like you’ve never seen,” the president said of the massive shift to mail voting prompted by the pandemic.The lawsuits are a likely precursor for what will come afterward. TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Members of a migrant caravan started to meet some local resistance as they continued to arrive by the hundreds in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, where a group of residents clashed with migrants camped out by the U.S. border fence.About 100 migrants declined offers of rides to shelters and had camped out late Wednesday by the steel border fence at Tijuana's beach area, when a similar number of local residents marched up to the group shouting, "You're not welcome," and, "Get out!"Police kept the two sides apart.Vladimir Cruz, a migrant from El Salvador, said Thursday, "These people are the racists, because 95 percent of people here support us.""It is just this little group that doesn't support us," Cruz said. "They are uncomfortable because we're here."Playas de Tijuana, as the area is known, is an upper-middle-class enclave, and residents appeared worried about crime and sanitation. One protester shouted, "This isn't about discrimination, it is about safety!"There are real questions about how the city of Tijuana will manage to handle the migrant caravans working their way up through Mexico, and which may total 10,000 people in all."No city in the world is prepared to receive this number of migrants," said Mario Osuna, the Tijuana city social development director. All of Central America against one, and one against Central America. ...
