CHENGDU, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The massive mudslide that hit Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Saturday had killed 15 people and injured nine others by Monday, local authorities said Tuesday.Wenchuan County was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and other neighboring provinces in west China in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.The county, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, was ravaged by rain-triggered floods and mudslides Saturday.At least 31 people were reported missing following the mudslide, but whether the 15 deaths were included was not known, according to a statement issued by the county government of Wenchuan.More than 50,000 residents and tourists were forced to evacuate in Aba as the local meteorological station issued warnings beginning Friday about expected heavy rains and possible geological disasters.Also, the county government of Wenchuan has arranged temporary shelters for residents left homeless by the floods.In Yingxiu Township of Wenchuan, rows of newly completed homes were submerged by the overflowed Minjiang River which runs through the town. The new homes had been built to accommodate those residents relocated outside Yingxiu after the deadly earthquake.If the flooding had not occurred, Lian Qunhua, who opened a grocery in the town, would have received the key for her new home in two weeks."This used to be my home," Lian told a Xinhua reporter, pointing to some debris in front of her. "That is my new home," she said, indicating a row of fresh new buildings soaked in the flood waters on the opposite bank of the Minjiang River."I feel hurt, indeed," she lamented.

GONGSHAN, Yunnan, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to search for 80 people still missing three days after rain-triggered mudslides hit a remote mountain town in southwest China's Yunnan Province, killing at least 12.By 7 p.m. Friday, rescuers had recovered six more bodies, bringing the death toll to 12, said Hou Xinrong, deputy head of the Drung-Nu Autonomous County of Gongshan, which administers Puladi Township where the mudslides occurred.Hampered by the mountain terrain and persistent rainfall, the rescue efforts had been progressing slowly, Hou said. "Excavators can't proceed to the site and mountain torrents could be triggered at any time due to the downpours."Most of the missing people are employees of the Yujin Iron Mine and residents of Puladi, where the mudslides struck at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.Around Friday noon, a Xinhua reporter saw several soldiers digging in the debris with spades, hoes and sometimes their bare hands in hardest-hit Litoudi Village."We've found a body here, but it was stuck in the mud. UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, Xue Hanqin, was elected judge of the International Court of Justice here Tuesday.Xue, a member of the International Law Commission, was elected by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council in separate voting.Xue won all 15 votes in the Security Council on Tuesday morning, Claude Heller, the Mexican UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for June, announced after the 15- nation Council cast the secret ballots.Heller, at the open Council meeting, also read a letter from the president of the General Assembly, Ali Treki, who said that Xue won a majority of votes in the 192-nation UN body.Xue "was elected member of the International Court of Justice," Heller said.The election was conducted under the relevant Security Council resolution to fill the vacancy after Judge Shi Jiuyong, a Chinese, resigned on May 28.She is the only female among the 15 judges of the International Court of Justice, and the third Chinese to serve on the Court.Xue told reporters here that she thanked all those who voted for her and said that she will carry out her duty under the UN Charter and the Statute of the Court.
