SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A distraught mother is on the hunt for clues after a thief stole her car and all the gifts she bought for her three children."We love Christmas," said Brenda Gamino.Gamino's Christmas tree is brimming with holiday spirit, but the scene underneath the tree is a bit bare. The gifts that should be there are gone, along with her 1998 Acura Integra. The car is her only way to get to work and drop of her kids - ages, 8, 10 and 12 - at school. A team of scientists from the UK and Ukraine have created a vodka distilled from rye grown in the exclusion zone near the site of Chernobyl's nuclear power plant. It's also made from water pulled from the area's aquifer. So, would you be insane to drink what they are calling 'Atomik' vodka? The makers say no, and that it’s perfectly safe to drink. The scientists, however, admit the grain starts out radioactive but claim the distillation process removes the dangerous isotopes. They even say they had a university lab run tests to ensure the vodka was safe to drink.They are hoping to release the vodka to the public in limited supply, where it will have to compete with liquors that were never radioactive. (AP) -- Lowe's Cos. is laying off thousands of employees at its U.S. stores as it outsources some of their duties to outside companies.The home-improvement chain, based in Mooresville, North Carolina, declined to say exactly how many employees were affected. But The Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of employees were told this week that their jobs were eliminated, which the company confirmed.Lowe's spokeswoman Jackie Pardini Hartzell said Thursday that the cuts are coming as the company moves to third-party assemblers and facility services to allow store associates to spend more time on the sales floor serving customers. Previously some store workers did assembly work, such a constructing floor models, and janitorial work. Hartzell said that employees in these positions will have the opportunity to apply for other open roles at Lowe's.She said the company is not disclosing how many are affected as the number of employees impacted varies by store and the company has a strong track record of retaining associates in other roles within the company.Lowe's, under its relatively new CEO Marvin Ellison, is trying to return its focus to its home improvement chain and streamline its business.After Ellison took the reins last year, he thinned executive positions at the company and began paring away weaker selling items in its stores. Lowe's also sold announced last summer that it was closing the 99 Orchard Supply Hardware stores it owns in California, Florida and Oregon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candidates, who are looking to unseat Congressman Duncan Hunter, are feeling emboldened as his trial grows near. This week, the Congressman’s wife took a plea deal with prosecutors, in which she has agreed to testify against her husband in the trial scheduled for Sept. 16. Several candidates had already made plans to run in 2020 against before prosecutors flipped his wife, and they are now watching to see what unfolds in court. Many of the candidates have begun fundraising efforts, and some say donations to their campaign have ramped up in the past few days. Many currently vying for the District 50 seat are Republicans within Hunter’s party, like El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells who ran against Hunter in 2018. “I think my chances are now even better, I lot of people know me more,” Wells said. “A lot of people, they wanted to vote for me last time but felt conflicted about the Duncan Hunter situation.” Temecula council member Matt Rahn, who is also eyeing Hunter’s seat, expects to gain some of his followers as the trial goes on. “I expect to see some change in the folks that are showing interest as we see this case evolve and unfold but right now, we have a solid base,” Rahn said. A conviction won’t remove Hunter from office. It will take a two-thirds House vote to do that. However, if he survives the trial, there's likely going to be some political fallout. That gives Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar confidence he can turn the district blue. “I think people are going to be willing to put country over party and look past the 'D' next to my name.
