Latinos are more likely to have to stay in the hospital and are also more likely to die from coronavirus, according to experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).A number of factors contribute to a higher risk, including language barriers and not receiving important information in their native language.That's why communities across the country are focusing on finding bilingual contact tracers.Community Care of North Carolina has a team of them.“We do try to find individuals that match the community, because that's what builds the trust, and people are more willing to talk to people that are like them, and their community,” said Christina Page with Community Care of North Carolina. “So, we try really hard to try to find bilingual individuals who can go out into the community.”Not only are people in the Latino community more willing to speak to a contact tracer, it's also easier to speak about their own health.“It is hard for the community to communicate through interpreters and that is a barrier for trust. It is easy for somebody, if you are talking in your language, to connect and express how you are feeling and what are the problems that you have,” said Wendy Pascual with Community Care North Carolina.Contact tracers aren't just finding people who have been exposed to coronavirus. They're often giving people information they had not received before and also connecting families with resources that help them get food and pay for utilities.There's also need for contact tracers who speak other languages, but the biggest need is for people who speak Spanish. 1609

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- The forward rate of spread of a Lakeside brush fire has been stopped, Cal Fire said. The announcement comes after the San Diego Sheriff's Department evacuated 14402-14470 Willow Road as the blaze threatened homes Wednesday afternoon. Evacuations were lifted shortly after 3:30 p.m.According to the Cal Fire, the fire sparked around 12:40 p.m. near the 14000 block of Willow Road. (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area is 12% contained Friday morning after scorching 11,000 acres and destroying three structures, authorities said.Firefighters, meanwhile, braced for dangerously hot weather caused by a heat wave this weekend."Near critical fire weather conditions could develop Friday afternoon and evening as gusty onshore winds could combine with warm and dry conditions in place," the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported Thursday.Crews were able to take advantage of improved fire weather conditions Thursday with slightly lower temperatures and moisture from the former hurricane Elida moving across the area, the department said."Current objectives include keeping the fire north of Castaic Lake, south of Highway 138, east of Red Rock Mountain and west of Tule Ridge," the department said.The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest and was 12% contained as of 7 a.m. Friday, according to the u. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments.The fire's size was listed as 11,000 acres Thursday night, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. LAKELAND, Fla. -- A family argument on Mother's Day turned violent and ended in the arrest of a mother and a son in Lakeland, Florida. Seth Bryant, 27, was arrested for felony battery (domestic violence) on his father, 58-year-old Clayton Bryant, after deputies say Seth and Clayton got into a physical argument over alcohol. The father and son were arguing after Seth demanded he be allowed to have more alcohol, according to the arrest affidavits. Seth reportedly put his fist against his father's face and pushed him with it, deputies say. After deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene, Seth reportedly made numerous derogatory racial comments toward the deputy who is black. As Seth was being arrested, Judy Bryant, 54, shoved her husband against a counter and said "How's this for domestic violence?" She then refused commands by the deputies and resisted the deputy's efforts to arrest her. Ultimately, she was placed into handcuffs and was arrested. Judy Bryant was charged with misdemeanor battery (domestic violence). 1083

A recent Pew Research study lists the Supreme Court as one of Latino voters’ top concerns.Christine Rodriguez, a Latina attorney set to be sworn into the Supreme Court Bar in January, says the concern comes from the lack representation. Rodriguez recalls dreaming of becoming an attorney as a 9-year-old girl but not having anyone to mentor her.“No one I knew was an attorney,” said Rodriguez.It wasn’t until her senior year of high school, during an educational trip to Washington, D.C., that she found her inspiration.“I was like, ‘Oh yeah! This is it! This is what I want to do,’” said Rodriguez of the moment she was able to observe Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the rest of the Supreme Court Justices as they heard a case.Rodriguez even kept the notes she took while observing. Near Justice Antonin Scalia’s name, she wrote a note describing him as talkative and funny. Next to Ginsburg’s name, Rodriguez wrote, “smart and serious.”Twenty years after this experience, Rodriguez is months away from getting sworn into the Supreme Court Bar, allowing her to argue cases before the Supreme Court.
