New NYPD training videos released Wednesday clearly show officers what they can and cannot do when taking a suspect into custody,But sometimes that training does not translate in real life. There's already there’s a law on the books banning officers from putting people in chokeholds, but the city council wants to take things a step further, banning officers from applying pressure or restricting a suspect's diaphragm.“It’s tough right now to be a police officer," said NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. "You have to worry that if a suspect shot at you and you put a knee on his back, that now you become the criminal.”Monahan said these new rules have his officers fighting crime with their hands tied behind their backs.Those in favor say that officers are merely being given a script telling them how to behave in a critical incident. However, there are still those that argue that the city council does not have expertise in police tactics.Even so, the NYPD argues every encounter is different and a blanket law is not the answer. NEW ORLEANS, La. – In the middle of Mardi Gras and just a few blocks off Bourbon Street in New Orleans, there’s an ink master leaving permanent marks on multiple generations. Jacci Gresham is known to many as America’s first black female tattoo artist. When we met Gresham, she was tattooing the jawline of one of her workers. “It’s an honor to get a panther from Jacci,” said the woman getting the tattoo. “Because she’s like the blackest panther of them all.” Gresham started tattooing in an era when women – especially black women – weren’t involved or even respected in the industry. “At that time women weren’t recognized as tattoo artists,” she said. “So, especially to see a black woman doing tattoos was kind of unusual – to see a woman doing tattoos was unusual.” Gresham gave her first tattoo in her home state of Michigan in 1972. After losing her job in the automotive industry, she moved to New Orleans and opened up what would become the city’s oldest tattoo shop – Aart Accent Tattoos and Body Piercing. Along the way, Gresham estimates that she’s inked thousands of people from all kinds of cultures – including a member of the Ku Klux Klan. “It was interesting to talk to somebody from a Klan’s person that would allow a black person to tattoo them,” she said. “And the reason why he allowed me to tattoo him – or so he said – was because I gave a good tattoo.” Gresham believes a good tattoo can help break down old racial barriers while also inspiring younger artists. “I see it every day here,” she said. “We do quite a cross section of people. I have black artists, white artists, Spanish artists. And people are looking for the art. They’re not looking at the who actually did the work.” Now in her 70s, Gresham is still perfecting her craft while adding art to human canvases with the hope her impact lasts longer than the tattoo ink that runs skin deep.“Stay on that grind,” she said. “If it’s in your heart, you can’t give it up.” 1969

In a world of digital games, there’s a group of people who prefer to keep it old school.Their game of choice: pinball. "We play in a league; the Chicago Pinball Authority League,” said competitive pinball player Eric Meunier. “There are 32 active participants." Competitive pinball is growing in popularity, and its headquarters is in Chicago. "This is where a lot of the best players in the world are," Meunier said. There are over 200 pinball arcades in the city, and countless leagues. The Chicago Pinball Authority League was started by Kent Zilch. In order to understand his passion for pinball, you have to go to his basement. It all started with one machine. "Then, we bought a second, then a third, then a fourth…,” Zilch said of his pinball machine collection.Now, Zilch owns more than 60! His basement is now his permanent practice area. "We like a mixture of old pinball machines with the new ones, too,” he says. “So, if you look around, there are machines all the way back to the 60s." The newest game added to his collection is The Munsters. The games also bring the family together. Zilch’s wife and children are also on his league. "We come down here probably four or five times a week," he said. When it's pinball season, they all practice together. Zilch says they usually begin in January and go through August. "We have two divisions; we have an A division and a B division,” he said. “And whoever wins a division, wins a really cool trophy." Each game has its own set of rules. But with four people to a machine, there is one goal: rack up the most points. “You go to each game and then you get points based on what place you come in," Zilch said.The competition keeps him and his family and his team coming back to the flippers, but so does the fun. 1791
