WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General William Barr defended the aggressive federal law enforcement response to civil unrest in America as he testified for the first time before the House Judiciary Committee. He pushed back against angry, skeptical Democrats who said President Donald Trump’s administration is unconstitutionally suppressing dissent. The hearing, held Tuesday as the late civil rights icon John Lewis laid in state steps away in the Capitol rotunda, highlighted the wide election-year gulf between the two parties on police brutality and systemic racism in law enforcement, which Barr argued does not exist. Massive protests have sparked unrest across the nation following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police and calls for reform have grown louder.Tuesday's hearing is part of a series of hearings in which Democrats on the committee are holding to investigate what they say has become a politicized department. In his opening statements, Barr referred to an investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Russia as "bogus" and asserted that he acts independently of President Donald Trump and his administration. During the questioning he said he does not believe there is widespread systemic racism with law enforcement entities in the country. Democrats pressed Barr on his handling of the Mueller report and the Department's intervention in legal cases against two Trump allies: Roger Stone and Michael Flynn.In Stone's case, the Department of Justice backtracked on an initial sentencing recommendation of between seven and nine years in prison for lying to Congress. The department later recommended a lesser sentence, prompting all DOJ lawyers assigned to Stone's case to resign. (KGTV) - The Vista Unified School District's school board on Tuesday passed new rules for its middle and high schools seeing cases of COVID-19In a special meeting, the school board discussed a staffing issue that’s occurred since reopening for in-person learning last week.There have been at least four confirmed COVID-19 cases within the district. As a result, teachers are being quarantined and school officials say they’re having difficulty finding substitute teachers to fill in.The board unanimously approved a plan that would allow in-person learning to continue as the district addresses the staffing issue. The plan is to use a threshold system to close down some of its middle schools and high schools with positive COVID-19 cases.The details have yet to be hashed out, but in principle, the district's board agreed the new rules would be:-- If one school has two positive cases in a specific time, the whole school would have to switch to virtual learning for 14 days-- If three secondary schools see one case each within a certain period, all three would have to go virtual for two weeksMission Vista High School already has two positive COVID-19 cases, so the district plans to close the school on Thursday and transition students and staff to virtual learning. WARNING: Some might find the video disturbing due to content and languageDELRAY BEACH, Fla.-- Delray Beach, Florida police officers responded to a call Saturday of a woman and children standing on a roof. When they got there, they say they found a 23-year-old woman who was hallucinating and two small children on the garage ledge on a townhouse. Officer Rob Addea got under the window, ready to catch a child or the woman if necessary, police said.“Just get the kids back inside,” Addea said.Two other officers went upstairs and out a window to the ledge and one grabbed the children's arms while the other tried to reason with the woman, police said.Police eventually were able to rescue all of them.Body camera video recorded the actions of the officers. The woman has been committed to a mental health facility under the Baker Act and might face criminal charges, police said.The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating and the children are in their custody.  1032
