LOS ANGELES, April 8 (Xinhua) -- NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has discovered a rare asteroid that traces out a horseshoe shape relative to Earth, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said on Friday.Unlike most near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) that have eccentric, or egg-shaped, orbits that take the asteroids right through the inner solar system, the new object has an orbit that is almost circular such that it cannot come close to any other planet in the solar system except Earth, JPL said.However, even though the asteroid rides around with Earth, it never gets that close, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.As the asteroid approaches Earth, the planet's gravity causes the object to shift back into a larger orbit that takes longer to go around the sun than Earth. Alternately, as Earth catches up with the asteroid, the planet's gravity causes it to fall into a closer orbit that takes less time to go around the sun than Earth, according to JPL.The asteroid therefore never completely passes our planet. This slingshot-like effect results in a horseshoe-shaped path as seen from Earth, in which the new object, designated 2010 SO16, takes 175 years to get from one end of the horseshoe to the other, JPL said."The origins of this object could prove to be very interesting, " said Amy Mainzer of JPL, the principal investigator of NEOWISE, which is the asteroid- and comet-hunting portion of the WISE survey mission. "We are really excited that the astronomy community is already finding treasures in the NEOWISE data that have been released so far."JPL manages and operates the WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority announced on Monday that it has received 7.5 million yuan from the country's Ministry of Finance to strengthen its efforts in fighting persistent drought in some regions.The fund would be used to support efforts by meteorological departments in Shanxi, Hebei, Anhui, Shandong, and Henan provinces, all major crop-producing regions, to conduct activities for seeding clouds and making artificial rain, according to a statement posted on the National Meteorological Administration website.Government data shows that a prolonged drought since last October had affected 108.24 million mu (7.22 million hectares) of wheat crops in those provinces, as well as Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, as of Sunday.The statement added that some of the affected regions experienced two rounds of snowfall last week, which were helpful in alleviating the drought. However, the major wheat-growing provinces of Shandong and Henan recorded no rainfall.The country's meteorological authority also predicted no significant rainfall or heavy snowfall for the dry regions over the next three days. SUVA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Some 300 diabetes patients undergo amputations every year in Fiji and the trend is worrying the authorities.This is according to research carried out by the country's Physiotherapy Associations which shows that majority of these amputations occur in the 40 to 60 age group, physiotherapist Lusia Tikolevu told radio FijiVillage website on Monday.Tikolevu said that they are trying to formulate a protocol for physicist to better understand diabetes in Fiji.A visit to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Fiji's capital city of Suva by Xinhua reporter reveals the increasing number of bed ridden patients affected by diabetes in wards.Tikolevu said that diabetes is a prevalent disease and needs the involvement of the whole community for a successful preventative measures.Shocking figures show four out of every 10 people in Fiji have diabetes, putting it amongst the highest in the world.The Fred Hollows Foundation in New Zealand that completed the first survey of its kind in Fiji also showed the diabetic rate in the island nation is four times more than in New Zealand.The survey across 34 communities in Fiji found 40 percent of the people have diabetes."When we found out that 40 percent of the population had diabetes the scope and the depth of the problem just hit us. The impact in terms of costs family aspects, economic issues its just going to be staggering," says Doctor Tom Schaefer from the New Zealand foundation.The survey results also showed a third of those with diabetes did not know they had the disease and women were almost twice as likely as men to have it.The magnitude of the problem is worrying for a health system which has committed staff but little resources."The cost of medication alone is going to outstrip the ability of any health system to do it," says Schaefer.The existence of the sugar cane industry in the island nation may be a contributing factor to the high level of diabetics.
