In an industry like cosmetology, where all services revolve around hair, skin and nails, getting up close and personal to people is a big part of the job.For those looking to make a career in the beauty business, the pandemic is taking a toll. “I had 84 students pre-COVID,” said Donna Kramer, executive director at Empire Beauty School. “I have 72 right now.”Kramer says COVID-19 initially caused the campus to close.It’s recently reopened with new restrictions set by the local health department. Class sizes are smaller, fewer clients can come in due to social distancing and all students have to wear masks.The area that’s taken the biggest hit, however, is attendance.“It’s kind of toying with people’s personal lives,” Kramer said. “We’ve had students that have had to miss a lot of school because of daycare issues. We’ve had students that have had to actually stay away temporarily because their spouses.”According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of hairstylists and cosmetologists is projected to drop by 1% by the end of the decade, which is leaving many students concerned that their career opportunities might be going down the drain.“I know a lot of students kind of have that fear of not being able to find a job now with COVID,” said Alexis Lovato, a cosmetology student at Empire Beauty School.Lovato says many of her classmates are concerned about their employment options once their training is complete.“I think a lot of its just worried about being placed and what’s going to be available for them after their graduation,” she said.Kramer says despite the challenges, students are still getting their hours in and while hands-on training may be a little different, it’s a style they can adapt to.“This industry is going to really flourish once we can get through this,” she said. 1826

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a press conference regarding the extension of increased unemployment benefits on Friday, hours before those benefits are set to expire.As part of the CARES Act, a coronavirus stimulus bill passed by Congress in March, federal unemployment benefits were increased by 0 a week. At the time, lawmakers thought it was a necessary move as millions lost their jobs amid lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus.However, those benefits are set to expire this weekend. And with the unemployment rate still in double digits and the virus spreading at its highest levels yet, Democrats say increased unemployment benefits should be extended.On Thursday, reports emerged that Republicans were considering extending unemployment benefits, only at a level of about 0 a week. GOP lawmakers are expected to unveil their plan for another round of coronavirus stimulus next week.Pelosi slammed the Republicans' delay in her press conference Friday, calling it a "dereliction" of their duty. She asked that Republicans "get something on paper" so that Democrats and the American people could see their plan.House Democrats passed the HEROES Act in May — a trillion bill that would extend the 0 unemployment benefits through the end of the year. It would also extend those benefits to gig workers, independent contractors, and other self-employed people.Rep. Richard Neal, D-Massachusetts, called on Congress to keep up the "momentum" of the CARES Act by adopting the HEROES Act.Republicans argue that extending the benefits is too expensive and that the ,400 payments encourage people not to seek unemployment. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance cameras captured a bizarre and dangerous accident in the South Bay. Darell Salondaguit has twelve surveillance cameras posted around his home at the corner of 15th Street and Imperial Beach Boulevard. He was taking a shower around eleven p.m. Monday when he heard a noise. "We heard a really big thud and thought it was cats in the backyard," said Salondaguit.When he woke up Tuesday morning, he discovered his wooden fence, potted plants, and palm tree were severely damaged. When he played back his cameras, he was shocked at what he saw. "Just a tire flying across from over there, crashing through here," described Salondaguit.The tire flew off of a car on Imperial Beach Boulevard, rolled across 15th Street and crashed through his fence. The cameras also show a man and a woman, casually step over the damaged fence, pick up the tire and leave."They had to come through the yard and get their tire, they didn't bother knocking or anything," said Salondaguit.He filed a report with the Sheriff's Department and hopes the people responsible will come forward."It was like really scary, cause I tend to check the plants at nighttime to see if they're properly watered because we have an automatic watering system. Well, if I was out here, I'd probably be seriously injured, or even dead, cause that thing was going really fast." 1388

In an old traditional historic church building sits a seemingly nontraditional religion."We don’t pretend that we’ve invented something new; we just gave it a title and a safe place for people to use cannabis in their spiritual journeys to come here, and worship, and pray,” said co-founder Steve Berke. “We don’t tell them who to pray to. It’s really an open-minded spiritual community."Their religion is Elevationism. Berke says it's about elevating one's self to the best version of self."While we do believe that cannabis can help you on your way to your spiritual journey, it’s also okay if you don’t use cannabis," said Berke.He says they have people all over the world come to their church. People of all political views, races, and even other religious beliefs have joined their congregation."Elevationism is not a replacement to your existing faith. It’s more of a supplement to it. You can be a Christian and an Elevationist. You can be Jewish and an Elevationist. You can be a Buddhist and an Elevationist," said Berke.Before COVID-19, like any other church, they would hold a Sunday service in their sanctuary with speakers, music, and lessons to take away. But unlike a traditional church, the consumption of cannabis was allowed."We certainly encourage people to try cannabis, and if it doesn’t work for you, that’s OK. You don’t have to use cannabis. We don’t tell you when to use it. We don’t tell you how much to use it," said Berke.Since the pandemic, they’ve had to stop the Sunday service but have continued with their daily BEYOND, a guided meditation paired with a light show. It’s family-friendly, no consumption allowed, and open to the public."Everybody takes something different from the meditation and that’s the goal. The goal is some people will take one quote of that mediation and apply it to their lives," said Berke.And just like any other church, Berke says they give back to their community."We’ve led by example. We’ve volunteered picking up trash in the neighborhood, volunteering at animal shelters, feeding the homeless. We do all of the things that a normal church does without preaching a dogma inside our church," said Berke.For now, they have one location in Denver but plan to expand to Los Angeles next year. They're also working on more guided meditations."We’ll have BEYOND Happiness, BEYOND love, BEYOND doubt, so all these different themes encouraging people to think and question existing establishment thought and really encourage their spiritual paths and journeys," explained Berke.Berke says the one golden rule of their ministry is similar to other traditional religions: treat others the way you want to be treated."We’re all one human race. We may have different beliefs. We may believe in different gods, but that’s okay, right? Because we’re all spiritual and we all ultimately want this world to be a better place for the next generations," said Berke. 2920
