WASHINGTON, D.C. — The constellation of polling places across the country forms the backbone of voting in America. Yet, with about 117,000 of them, it doesn’t always run smoothly.“Some of them are commonplace situations, folks who may not know what ID they need to vote,” said Izzy Bronstein, campaign manager with the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization Common Cause.Common Cause is one of several organizations banding together for the nonpartisan effort Protect the Vote to ensure every vote gets counted in the 2020 election.“There are a number of problems we expect this year,” Bronstein said.Among the potential issues: confusion over mail-in ballots, early voting dates, whether ballot witnesses are needed and what polling sites are open, as well as the potential for voter intimidation. Fear of that is rising on the heels of President Donald Trump saying at the first presidential debate, "Go to the polls and watch very carefully."With all of that in mind, Protect the Vote is recruiting thousands of volunteers across the country – 20,000 signed up so far – to be on hand at polling sites to answer voter questions. They will also help get them in touch with attorneys – from the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law -- through a nationwide hotline, so they can assist a voter if they run into trouble casting a ballot.“We know that this is a big election with a lot of at stake,” said Suzanne Almeida of Common Cause PA, which is heading up the effort in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.Almeida is quick to point out that their volunteers are not poll watchers, which are people usually affiliated with a particular candidate.Instead, volunteers with Protect the Vote are called poll monitors and are non-partisan.“It is even more incumbent on us, particularly wearing our nonpartisan hat, to make sure that the election runs smoothly, because we know that folks are going to be looking carefully at the results in Pennsylvania,” Almeida said.Other battleground states, like Florida and Wisconsin, can also expect an election spotlight since there have been election-related issues there in the past.“It's about making sure that every voter gets their ballot counted and their voice heard in our democracy,” Bronstein said. “And that's really something we can all come together on.”If you run into any issues while voting, Protect the Vote has set up a nationwide hotline, staffed by attorneys from the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has ordered the military's independent newspaper, Stars and Stripes, to cease publication at the end of the month. The plan includes closing all of its offices worldwide.This is despite congressional efforts to continue funding the century-old publication. Hands up – don’t shoot!” could be heard from protesters at a recent gathering in Ville Platte, Louisiana.Yet, while free speech is a part of the First Amendment, it doesn’t extend as far as you might think.One example: your job.“Those protections are nuanced,” said Mark Gaston Pearce, who is with Georgetown Law’s Workers Rights Institute and is a former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board under President Obama. “People are under the false impression that a private sector employment relationship affords you all of the rights that are guaranteed to you by the constitution – but it does not.”In other words, an employer, in a state where employment is “at will,” could potentially fire someone for attending or participating in a protest.“Provided, of course, that it’s non-discriminatory,” Pearce said.There are a few exceptions. Federal and state employees are protected because they work for the government. Unions also have some protections. Also, four states: New York, North Dakota, Colorado and California have specific laws protecting employees’ free speech rights.“But that’s four states in a 50-state country,” Pearce said.There are efforts underway in Congress that could expand free speech protections for employees under the “PRO Act.” It passed the House in February and is now in the Senate.“If labor law is reformed, then that would bring those kinds of protections to the public,” Pearce said.Until then, he added that an employee’s best defense may be found in their employer’s own words.“Oftentimes, a lot of that lies in the employee handbook and the publications they make you sign to prove that you read it – and most employees don’t read it,” Pearce said. “They need to know all of that stuff.”Because even in America, free speech doesn’t necessarily apply everywhere, all the time. 2037
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The federal eviction moratorium is set to expire Friday, putting millions of Americans at risk of being kicked out of their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.The CARES Act provided certain protections from eviction and late fees due to nonpayment of rent for most tenants in federally subsidized or federally backed housing. However, those protections were only in effect from March 27 to July 24.When the moratorium ends, landlords can give tenants who haven’t paid rent 30 days’ notice and then begin filing eviction paperwork in late August.The Urban Institute estimates that the eviction moratorium applied to about 12.3 million of the 43.8 million rental units in the United States, or around 28%. If the protections are not extended, those 12.3 million renters could be at risk.So far, there aren’t any plans to extend the moratorium.However, The Washington Post reports that the House has passed legislation to create a 0 billion rental assistance fund, which would help renters at the lowest income levels for up to two years. The Senate hasn't acted on that bill. The Trump administration and Senate Republicans are hurrying to present a new coronavirus relief bill of their own before the end of the session, but it doesn’t yet appear to include protections for renters.
