And with the help of places like, Kitchen's For Food, the non-profit is working to provide healthy food for those San Diegans in need."Half a million San Diegans are food insecure, and these are individuals that don't know where healthy food comes from," says Food System Alliance Executive Director Elly Brown Food System Alliance works with their network group, to get donated and surplus healthy food into the hands of those in need. At the same time, their goal is to look at the issues across the entire food system, and find solutions. "When I'm talking about a food system, I'm talking about the chain of events that take food from seed, all the way to your plate. From the farming and fishing in our community, to the way food is distributed, all the way to the issues of waste. We are a powerful network of over 150 organizations, from diverse sectors that are coming together around this mission."However, the current pandemic has disrupted the food distribution chain, while at the same time, the need for food has increased."Food insecurity has risen, and there are tremendous hardships for food workers and food businesses in our community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ricardo Silva, a Chula Vista native, has it in his blood to both serve his country and join the medical field.He had multiple family members join the military and as a San Diego local, he grew up around the Navy, so he became a sailor about ten years ago. Growing up with a mother who was a nurse, it makes sense that he and his sister followed her lead. His sister now works for the Public Health Department and he’s working at Naval Hospital Bremerton in Washington with the preventative medicine team as a contact tracer for COVID-19 patients.He and his team have worked days as long as 18 hours since the start of the pandemic, figuring out where patients contracted the virus.“It’s very very detailed, trying to figure out where they got it and how to try to prevent that from happening for the next person,” he said.Naval Hospital Bremerton has screened more than 35,000 patients as of July 30.“As I do this work, as tough as it is, when this is all over I just want to be able to say I did my part to help get through this,” he said. 1067

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County leaders announced Thursday that they will begin to allow passive activities at beaches beginning June 2. According to the county, such activities that will be allowed include sunbathing and relaxing with towels and chairs. Supervisor Greg Cox noted that activities like football and volleyball will not be allowed. Face coverings will also be required. “We’re taking this action as we continue to allow some semblance of reality to resume in San Diego," Cox said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Restaurants are feeling backed into a corner after the pandemic forced them to add outdoor seating and Saturday brought cold rain and high winds.As the clouds rolled in, businesses across San Diego braced for impact."We were planning on covering everything up but we were kind of waiting and seeing just how big the storm was going to be," Whiskey Girl Manager Jake Southworth said.In the Gaslamp, he says they've been lucky this weekend, "We were ready to go with more of the tarps, to put out but waited till midnight when we were closed anyway, so definitely dodged a bullet there and today again it looks like it's going to hold off until later so I feel like we're still going to be doing good."Whiskey Girl is on a section of Fifth Avenue that shuts down to vehicle traffic Thursday through Saturday, allowing restaurants to spill into the street and seat more customers.The extra chairs help them stay afloat, but outside the rain and future winter weather are putting a damper on their options.Some businesses put up pop-up shades and umbrellas to provide some shelter against the weather."I mean it does open a lot more seating having outside but we'll see what the weather sends us," Southworth said.Every restaurant is also holding its breath, waiting to see if the county drops into the purple most restrictive tier next week, which would mean no indoor dining at all."How can I ask someone to spend, you know - on a drink if they're sitting outside shivering and the rain's coming through?"
