CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Firefighters put out a 28 acre brush fire that ignited near Lower Otay Lake.Cal Fire confirmed on Sunday that the fire is 100 percent contained and all resources have been taken off the incident.The vegetation fire, dubbed the Otay Fire, was reported by Cal Fire at about 10 a.m. on Saturday near the east side of the lake.Both air and ground resources were used to battle back the flames, according to Cal Fire.No structures were threatened by the fire. 491

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Sweetwater Unified School District officials said Thursday they are investigating an incident in which someone disrupted an online classroom by playing inappropriate audio.According to a district spokesperson, the incident happened Wednesday during a session taught by an Olympian High School teacher. The incident was reported by both a student and the teacher.Audio described as "sexual" in nature was played in the virtual classroom.District spokesperson Manny Rubio told 10News that the source of the audio is unlikely to be a hacker, and that a student or students cooperated in the disruption."Each course has an access code and we believe there are other students using those codes to enter and create disruptions," said Rubio. "Our IT staff is looking to identify the specific sources."It's unknown if the school or district requires students to use cameras to attend the online classroom.The district's 25 campuses matriculated over 40,000 students for online classes this school year, which started Monday. Students have been assigned equipment and software to access their virtual classes, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Rubio said that since Monday, there have a few similar incidences of disruption but that a great majority of students are having positive experiences. CINCINNATI -- In a “bold move,” Kroger will phase out plastic bags and transition to reusable bags by 2025, according to CEO Rodney McMullen.The Cincinnati-based grocery chain announced the switch Thursday, saying the move “will better protect our planet for future generations."Kroger-owned QFC in Seattle will be the first to make the transition; plastic bags are expected to be eliminated there by 2019.Kroger Executive Vice President Mike Donnelly said the decision aligns with the company’s commitment to making a positive social impact.  "We listen very closely to our customers and our communities, and we agree with their growing concerns," Donnelly said in a news release. McMullen said the move to nix plastic correlates with the company’s “Zero Hunger | Zero Waste commitment” -- a goal to divert waste from landfills and donate food to hungry families.The grocery chain has also been redesigned milk jugs in an effort to use less plastic, CNN reported. (KGTV) - The scared whimpers of a little dog which had been missing from his Eastlake home for days led to a courageous rescue by a Chula Vista firefighter Thursday morning.The 30-pound dog, Sammy, disappeared from his home in Eastlake Trails Monday, according to Chula Vista Fire Department officials.Early Thursday morning, Sammy’s family noticed sounds coming from a drainage pipe near their home on Secret Canyon Place.Family members called the fire department which responded, along with Chula Vista Public Works crews and Chula Vista Police, to find the dog in an 18-inch drainage pipe underground.Firefighter Jed Burt went down a manhole and crawled through the drainage pipe, which was roughly the size of his helmet, to reach Sammy.When the dog refused to come out on his own, Burt pushed the dog through the pipe to another manhole nearby.Video posted on the IAFF Local 2180 Chula Vista Firefighters union Instagram account shows the moment Sammy reached the surface.Sammy was reunited with his family and suffered no apparent injuries.10News is working to bring you developments in this story. 1137

(KGTV) — New businesses are set to call the Otay Ranch Town Center home in the coming months. Just a few months ago, the mall had more than a dozen empty storefronts and employees at the mall called it a ghost town. The new businesses moving in include Novo Brazil Brewing, Planet Fitness, and Barons Market.LONGFORM: Vacant storefronts reflect mall struggles at Otay Ranch Town CenterBrookfield Property Partners took over full ownership of the mall six weeks ago. It was a part of a larger merger across the country. The mall's general manager, Steven Sayers, sat down with 10News."Nothing was going wrong with the property at all. It was just, some of it was just timing with expiring leases and unfortunately, some tenants just left," says Sayers.Sayers says these new businesses were already in the works before the merger.
