Days before a gun rights protest that is set to take place this weekend at the Virginia Capitol, Gov. Ralph Northam declared an emergency, which will ban protesters from entering the grounds around the Capitol with firearms. The emergency, which was declared by executive order, will span Friday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. until Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m.“Law enforcement intelligence analysts have identified credible threats of violence surrounding the event, along with white nationalist rhetoric and plans by out-of-state militia groups to attend,” said a statement from Northam’s office. Northam tweeted that the order was to protect citizens and lawmakers. “We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials. But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe,” the governor tweeted.Northam, a Democrat elected in 2018, now enjoys partisan support from the Virginia House and Senate. Following the 2019 election, Democrats have the majority in the Virginia House of Delegates for the first time in more than two decades. With Democrats holding the bicameral legislature, there has been a push to enact gun control. While a bill to ban assault weapons was dropped earlier this week, other bills are still being considered. One is limiting the purchases of firearms to one a month. Earlier this month, Northam signed legislation to prohibit firearms inside of the Capitol building and adjacent legislative office building. The law does not prohibit guns from the grounds near the Capitol, which is why Northam signed an executive order for this weekend. The response to gun legislation in Virginia has been swift, prompting an expected protest for this weekend. Many counties in Virginia have enacted “second amendment sanctuary” laws, also in response to Democratic proposals. 1885

Despite saying that the spread of coronavirus is going to get "very, very bad," President Donald Trump said that he plans on reopening commerce in the country "very soon."The statement is at odds at the recommendation of many leading public health officials, who suggest the worst of the spread of the coronavirus might not come until for later in the spring, although an exact date on the peak is still up in the air, according to the CDC. Trump in his Monday press briefing suggested that the economic fallout from preventing the spread of coronavirus could be worse than the actual spread of coronavirus. "America will again, and soon, be open for business. Very soon. A lot sooner than three or four months that somebody was suggesting. A lot sooner. We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself," Trump said.Trump's comments were back by economic adviser Larry Kudlow, who told Fox News on Monday, "The president is right. The cure can't be worse than the disease. And we're going to have to make some difficult tradeoffs."The Trump administration is requesting states to not issue updated unemployment numbers as many workers are out of work to prevent the spread of the virus. The Dow Jones has lost more than one-third of its value in the last six weeks as the virus has spread globally.Last week, the Trump administration issued a 15-day guidance to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Trump said that the guidance will be reevaluated next week. Amid the guidance, a number of states have closed all non-essential businesses in order to slow the spread of the virus. The top concern is that hospital could be overwhelmed with a surge of patients. Trump added that "We're giving the governors a lot of leeway."Trump said on Monday that reopening sections of the economy will take weeks and not months. "We can do both at the same time," Trump said about reopening the economy and preventing the spread of coronavirus. As part of fighting the virus, Trump boasted about several drugs that are being shipped to the states, with the hope they can be used to treat coronavirus patients. These drugs however, as of Monday, are still early in the testing phase and have not been approved by the FDA as a treatment for coronavirus. Also during Monday's news briefing, Trump and Attorney General William Barr said that an executive order will be issued to prohibit the hoarding of medical supplies. Barr said that the order won't go after individuals who have a large stockpile of supplies, but will target corporations and businesses that could potentially have warehouses full of supplies, such as masks and hand sanitizer. CINCO RANCH, Texas – Investigators say a 29-year-old man was shot and killed by intruders who broke into his suburban Houston home. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office says Brenton Estorffe was killed early Wednesday at his home in Cinco Ranch, a community 26 miles west of Houston.Sheriff Troy Nehls says Estorffe told a 911 operator that someone had broken a window in the back of his house. The man confronted the two intruders and was shot. The intruders then fled."The father woke up and confronted apparently two individuals, at which time there was some gunshots that were fired and the homeowner, a white male, is deceased inside the residence," said Nehls.Nehls says Estorffe didn't appear to be armed. His wife and two young children were not injured."It's sad, sad," said Nehls. "We have a homeowner now here in Fort Bend County who is no longer with us, and the father of two small children. Breaks your heart."Relatives said on social media that Estorffe was an Australian native. No arrests have been made and investigators haven't established a motive."It's a little unusual to have, not saying it doesn't happen but it's a little unusual for guys that are wanting to break into a home to steal a television or something to break into a house at midnight," said Nehls. "There were cars in the driveway." 1331
