SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has a new challenge that promotes bike riding, exploring the community and supporting local businesses. The Better by Bike blog is website that features everything from bike routes, to bike repair tips, to features on local bike riders.Part of the new program is a scavenger hunt that takes riders through the mid-city area. It ends Aug. 30 and is a competition to see who can get the most points after visiting local businesses and answering questions. The challenges range from taking pictures of specific spots to describing murals painted by local artists. It uses the Scavify application. Winners will then be awarded prizes, including gift cards to local restaurants.Anisha Gianchandani is the Climate Advisor for the City of San Diego and said this is part of a bigger-picture project to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and make San Diego more livable.“So it’s really just a fun way to get outside safely, enjoy your neighborhood and support small local businesses,” she said, later adding that “when you slow down, you get to see so many parts of your neighborhood that you normally wouldn’t see in a car.”It also helps local businesses. Stores and restaurants had the chance to submit their locations to be part of the scavenger hunt, which brings foot traffic to the area.Juan Pablo Sanchez’s family owns Super Cocina, one of the stops on the scavenger hunt. They had a local artist paint a mural on their wall outside, and their question pertains to that art.“We want to encourage you to use these streets, to go through us, to see our culture, to see the people that live here,” said Sanchez.Rudy Vargas, a native to the City Heights area, has embraced the challenge, heading up the leaderboard. He said even though he is familiar with his home, he’s still learned new facts about his neighborhood.“It was a good way to revisit some of my favorite places in City Heights but also visit some places I didn’t even know existed,” said Vargas.Vargas said he first picked up a passion for riding bikes when commuting to SDSU as a student, and has since kept up the passion.“My hope is that we continue this culture change and we step away from our vehicles because like I said there’s no other feeling like it,” he said. 2286

SAN DIEGO — Football icon Drew Brees gave a Temecula, California teenager the gift of a lifetime this week.The New Orleans Saints QB surprised Alex Ruiz at a Del Mar flag football event with a prosthetic leg."Surprise," Brees yelled into a microphone.Ruiz suffered a severe leg injury while playing football in October 2017. The quarterback at Linfield Christian School in Temecula was rolling out of the pocket when he was tackled and injured. The injury forced an amputation of Ruiz's foot.Brees presented the teen with a walking prosthetic Friday."If there's anything above cloud nine that's where I'm at right now," Ruiz said, all smiles after Brees asked him what he planned to do first with his new prosthetic.Brees added that once Ruiz gets the hang of it, he'll receive an athletic prosthetic as well with which to begin athletic training. (KGTV) — Pacific Beach restaurants are open for dine-in service for the first time since the pandemic started."People look happy, people are just happy they don't have to cook for themselves right now, they have some place to go where someone can cook for them," Mavericks Event Manager Krista Marcheschi said.Mavericks is a popular destination for drinks and dancing weekend nights, but since the pandemic Marcheschi said they are adhering to the strict guidelines set by the county.RELATED: Encinitas lifeguards out in full force for Memorial DayMarcheschi said they closed on March 15th and reopened last week for take out. Local physicians are stressing the importance of getting screened.For four years, the actor fought a silent battle with this cancer. He was diagnosed in his late 30's, much younger than the age many get tested."What we have seen is in younger people, the rates of colon cancer are going up and have actually gone up every decade, and the reasons for that are not known," says Dr. Abi Olulade with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.Olulade says the rates of colon cancer are higher in the African American community."Not only is there an increased rate in colon cancer, but there's an increased chance of dying from this if you are African American," says Olulade.The American Cancer Society estimates 12-percent of colorectal cancer diagnosis this year will be in people under the age of 50."People have put off their screening, which is dangerous," says Dr. Walter Coyle with the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center.Coyle says due to the pandemic, fewer patients are coming in for screenings."The American Cancer Society says we should start screening people at age 45 and up now. All the other societies say 50 unless you're African American."Coyle says a healthy diet can help lower the risks of this cancer. He hopes the news of famous actor Chadwick Boseman will encourage people to get their screenings."I couldn't imagine someone that young and vigorous dying. Players will have to quickly adjust to the first major renovation at the famed South Course in more than a decade."I can't wait to see them play it and see what their scores are and try to hear some of their comments," Scott Bentley, who helps oversee the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Golf Division, said while giving 10News a tour of the changes Monday ahead of the tournment.Respected course designer Rees Jones, who helmed the last major renovation to Torrey Pines in 2001, examined advanced analytical data from the 2019 tournament, studying where the pros are hitting their shots. Jones used that information to recommend changes, moving several bunkers to locations that will force players to make a difficult strategic decision on how to approach the hole.
